  1. I am an MU grad and did my graduate work at BGSU. I was a Buckeye fan before attending either school and am still a Buckeye fan. This doesn't make me a front runner, my identity as a football fan simply lies elsewhere. That is kind of a myopic view isn't it?
If you like Ohio State so much, then why didn't you go there instead of MU? (I am assuming Miami, but maybe Marshall?). When you attend a school, that school is the one that should get 100% of your allegiance. The right thing for you to do would have been to cut all ties with OSU the first day you set foot on the MU campus (I know I am going to get some disagreement on this from some on this thread who see otherwise). I will never understand those who think that it is okay to root for OSU because they are "Ohio's" team. Those folks are just dead wrong. Schools do not represent geographical areas, only professional sports teams do. There are two football teams that represent the state of Ohio and they are the Browns and the Bengals. OSU is a school. It is either yours or it is someone else's.
There's a heck of a lot more that goes into choosing a school than just your sporting allegience. In fact, in the great scheme of things, it really doesn't mean much at all.
  2. the announcers commented on the empty seats and said that it was a bad day for the game b/c the indians are hot and on tv, there was an air show, it was labor day weekend and many people went for a quick trip out of town, etc. they also went on to say that a thurs. night game late in the season at browns stadium would be better and draw more fans
That's basically what Terry Pluto said in his column.Good idea...bad execution. (timing)
  3. There's a few OSU fan sites. This one seems to have mostly people from other Ohio D-I schools that root for them. It's supposed to be a general college football board, but it's been commandeered by OSU fans. :nono:JJhuddle's college football forum. There's also Buckeyeplanet.com and a few others.
Thanks...I found the buckeyeplanet site..it looks pretty active.http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/index.phpThe MAC smack has already begun. One bad thing about playing OSU is putting up with this MAC inferiority complex. It would be nice just to talk about the game, but I know that's an impossibility.
  4. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this vaunted Akron defense that everyone speaks so highly of gave up 14 points to what some considered the worst football team in the country. The offense with its hurry up and line up then look to the sidelines with 18 seconds on the play clock only scored 16. If it wasn't for the int for a touchdown this game is a nail biter. If I were a betting man I'd take OSU and lay the 30. The only thing that will stop the diff from being that large will be OSU not running it up. Now before you go all "OSU lover" on me -- understand you can talk to anyone who knows me and I am the first one to bash OSU every chance I get. The problem is this Zips team looked far worse to me than anyone else on this board Saturday night. I hope I'm wrong and will say so if I am, but a month of looking at CK's prediction on the front page of this -- I was expecting a lot more. CK I was wondering how you were feeling about your prediction based on what you saw the first game. I'm guessing you can't be too terribly happy. Am I the only realist on this board or was I watching a different game. I can usually rely on GP1 to see the real side of these games, but his review was even up beat. I'm looking forward to seeing what JD does with the team this week and the supposed largest improve teams are supposed to see throughout the year -- week 1 to week 2. All I know is I think the 3-3-5 is a weak system at best and drives me crazy watching it in the stands. Akron's third down conversion rating was 2 of 12 while Army's was 7 of 18 that is just freaking ridiculous. When you are allowing that many third conversions I find it quite difficult to praise the defense the way most at the game have.
Actually Big Zip, I think the special teams gave up that last TD with the blocked punt. Can't pin that one on the D.
  5. The lot I  was in was right next to the tailgate party where different groups were singing, the white tent was set up, and we walked north across the Amtrac tracks on the Browns board walk to get to the stadium.  I followed the directions that were on one of the earlier posts.  I swear there were no flags and maybe only 5 cars.
That's odd. We were in the W 3rd lot by about 2pm. A TON of us. I met Zipsrifle and KentZip for the first time. Others that stopped by were DrZ, Johnny Utah, Z-Pouch and more...a veritible cavalcade of stars!! ;) If you ever want to hook-up prior to a game, just PM me.
Captain. We set up shop in the extreme south east part of the W. 3rd lot...about 5 rows in from the embankment going up to W. 3rd...near the tracks and tunnel going under the street.Sorry we missed you.Let's be sure to meet at the next tailgate!
  6. There were plenty of good empty seats between the 30's. With a game such as this, why not just charge one flat rate. The entire stadium could be general admission...first come, first serve. This way, everyone who wants to sit together...can.There were so many empty seats in this game, I can't understand being so strict about where people sit.I mean...just look at the empty seats here...P9010034_r1_c1.jpg

  7. Hey guys, I was at the 3rd street parking deck and it was empty. Where did everyone end up? I felt like I was invited to a party and was the only one who showed up. There was one group there having a little get together, when I asked them if they were Zips Nation they looked at me like I was nuts. Hmmm, good judge of character!!I know that 17,000 wasn't a good showing but I thought they really tried to make the game nice. I enjoyed it completely. While the concessions were overpriced the cost of the program at $3.00 was great!I enjoyed the band pre-game show. I guess you can never go wrong with patriotic songs. Half-time was good too but I couldn't hear it very well. I liked the dark blue pants.I read that there were a few problems with some of the Army cadets but over all I thought the chemistry between the fans, players, etc. was very respectful. How about those hits!!!! The one is on youtube. Kasparek got hit pretty hard too. I hope he's all right. It looked like he was. I liked that the "stadium" graphics were rooting for the Zips. I wasn't sure it would.Overall, great weather, great air show, and a great first win for our team!!!
I was in the W. 3rd lot and saw 5 Akron flags flying. Now, we were in the lot north of the RR tracks right near the stadium.Bleacher Bum informed me that there was also a gravel lot off W. 3rd just south of the tracks closer to the Main Ave. bridge. As we were waving to each other, I noticed that lot wasn't very full. Is that the one you're talking about?
  8. Tailgating and game pictures are now up on the AK-OLDIES memories page.http://www.akoldies.org/memories.phpThanks to everyone who showed up. Next tailgate will be Sept. 22 for the Can't game at the Rubber Bowl. Thanks again.I also understand the AK-OLDIES received a mention on the 1350 post-game show. I didn't hear it because we were still in Cleveland...but thanks for the mention!! AK_Oldies_medium.jpg

  9. I haven't had cable since 1992.  Used to have the big 8 foot mesh dish before DirectTV, which is great.ESPNU is extra $ with the Sports Package, however, I notice the new Big Ten network is no extra charge.  Neither was the NFL Network.I don't mind paying the extra $12 a month during football and basketball season for the Sports Package.
I LOVE the Direct TV sports package. There's always a college football or basketball game on during the respective seasons. And a lot of them are mid-major level, which I kinda prefer.
I agree Captain.I'd much rather see a mid-major game than, say, USC-Cal.In addition, any BCS game worth seeing is going to be on free TV anyway. :thumb:

  11. Twas the night before the Patriot Bowl,When all through the land,Not a Zips Fan was stirring,Not even the Band. The beers were pre-cooled,And tents folded, with careWith the knowledge thatgame day would soon be here. The city of Clevelandslept with nary a sound,For tomorrow it would wakewith the roar of the crowd.Jets blaze through the sky And cannons eruptAs the Zips take the fieldAnd Army gets shlepped. The fans start to head homewith their tail-gate gear.Heads are held high'Cause Army got smeared.Congrats all aroundand replies of "aw shucks"And all the whileCries of CAN'T STATE SUCKS!
UA Kid...there is nothing to say, but excellent!andGO ZIPS!
  12. Does anyone remember this off-color "chant" from the old days? It was taught to me by my RA in old Torrey Hall in 1979. I've cleaned it up a little for the board's sake.Drink beer! Drink beer! Drink beer G.D., drink beer!I won’t drink beer with any man, who won’t drink beer with an AKRON man.AKRON once. AKRON twice. Holy jumpin’ J.C.G.D., S.O.B, Gooooooooooo ZIPS!!!!
Close to a beer drinking song we used to sing at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house. We tried to form a chapter, but I think it died when we graduated.(I had to look this up by the way)Drink Beer, Drink Beer,Oh come drink a beer with me.For I dont give a damn,About any ol'e man who won't come drink a beer with me.Bring out the old Gold Goblet with that SigEp Heart upon it,And will open up another keg of beer,Keg of Beer! For its not for knowledge, that we've come to college, but to raise hell, while we get some, while we get a little wilder heeeere. For we will drink, drink, drink to Epsilon, and we will raise are glasses high,Raise 'em High! And we will drink to our fraternity, and we'll be loyal 'till we die,Oh how we love our sacred brotherhood,And we will laud it to the sky,For when the day is done,We will drink just one,To Sigma Phi Epsilon!Drink beer!
  13. We're hoping to set up shop in the W. 3rd parking lot for the Army game.Look for the new Akron flag flying high and proud. If you got'em, don't forget to wear your Oldies gear. We'll also have shirts and hats at the tailgate for anyone who would like to sign up.Going to leave Akron at around 3 p.m.Please stop bye and hoist one with us.GO ZIPS!!AK_Oldies_new_wht_r1_c1.jpg

  14.   i got it, we form a travelling tailgating party....move from THE PIT to the Upper MALL C LOT to the MUNI LOT....and back again.....those who stumble or cant keep up can root for Army
I've done that at a Browns game. You'd actually be surprised how kind police officers are to 2 drunk dudes trying to find another tailgate party on game day.On a side note...According to that map, I was planning on being in the West 3rd Street Parking Lot...**NOT THE PORT AUTHORITY** Anyone else, let me know where you think the biggest party will be and I'll relocate my crew over there. There will probably be at least 10 of us.
Bleach Bum...I thought that parking lot down the hill was the port authority...I know there is also port authority lots to the north of the stadium too....but hey, I could be wrong! I think we're thinking of the same place, just calling it different names. ;)
  15. I just registered to be a loud and proud AK-OLDIES member. Hopefully I can stretch the geographic coverage of the AK-OLDIES quite a bit. Let me tell you how excited I am that AK-ROWDIES has turned out to be such a great success that it has spawned the AK-OLDIES. I just have to sport it around Tallahassee and I cannot wait to come back to a basketball game this winter and join in the festivities with everyone! Go Zips!
Well then let me officially welcome you mnhouse! We'll be sending out your stuff asap.I'll send you an AK-OLDIES logo so you can change your avatar! Welcome!!!
