  1. I heard that there will be an even bigger party to celebrate the fact that my alma mater didn't give the job to a guy who's employment record and character probably wouldn't get him past the initial interview with personnel for a janitor position at some companies.
  2. LOL....This is when you find out what a joke this has all been. This position will mysteriously cease to exist.
  3. Really? I think you have it all wrong in terms of who should be appreciative. UA did this man a tremendous favor, and paid him handsomely at the same time. It's a favor that people like him should be eternally grateful to receive. Thankfully, we can now rid ourselves of this embarrassing and joke-inducing situation.
  4. I guess I have to keep reminding everyone.....this is only the tip of the iceberg.
  5. Can I have a dime for every election campaign where the perception of the voters didn't mirror what the supporters pushed for in the campaign? Come on. How do you know how people are going to see it? Nobody does. And to be honest with you, I don't see money for jail improvements as any more or less of an attraction for voters than a sports arena for a team that most of the county residents have never seen. If you've never been in jail or at a Zips b-ball game, what are the chances you'd care?
  6. That's the challenge. "Too Many" will see it that way.
  7. Good point. That's true, and proportionally, sales tax increases hurt the lower middle class and poor even more. You know, I see some people pointing out that this is for "OTHER THINGS" besides an arena for the Zips. But, none of that matters....it's the perspective from the VOTERS point of view that matters. How will they see it? And even if some see the "other" stuff, what is Summit County's history of getting people to "rally" behind improvements for the jail?
  8. If anyone noticed, the Sin Tax renewal actually Passed in Cuyahoga County last night. Things have changed in 20 years, but obviously a majority are still willing to have their tax money used to help their pro sports teams. So, I guess this is the only question left: Will Summit County voters somehow value the Zips the same way that Cuyahoga County values the Indians? It's a really tough road, I think.
  9. Dave, It's not WHAT the law is that you're not paying attention to. It's WHY. You fail to think about why it's like that. Why is THAT tax for THAT type of business collected by the retailer, and managed by the state in a manner completely different than the rest of the sales taxes, when it's an absolute nightmare for them to collect it and for the State to track it this way? Think about it. I'll call a dealership and put you on the phone so you stop baiting me to debate with you. You also made me go pull this explanation of why this law is so similar nationwide: Most of the time it is based on where the buyer lives. The logic behind that is so that people do not go outside of where they live just to avoid paying a certain amount of sales tax on a large purchase. Actually, to elaborate further, I learned that some states require dealerships to charge the sales tax on which county's rate is HIGHER, between the resident's county, or the dealership's county. But in Ohio, it's strictly county of residence. How exactly do want me to misinterpret that? I've owned businesses that have to collect sales tax. I know just a little bit about these things. And it's no picnic, even when you can collect the same rate all the time. I know this is a forum where people like to come to argue, but please, learn to sometimes trust someone else's knowledge instead of obsessively challenging it.
  10. Ok, I will compromise and say I've seen both
  11. Interestingly enough, this might all tie together. Let me explain. As much as I hate to bring it up, everyone might be well aware that Can't State had a capacity freshman class last Fall. They had to turn people away. And they didn't have an ex-football coach with a created "student success" position on their staff. So, what do we do? Brag about applications? Not enrollment, not gpa, not graduation rate, but applications? I'd be interested to see who measures "student success" based on number of applications? Unless, of course, you are desperate to tag something of achievement to Tressel's name.
  12. What do you mean you didn't find anything? You just did !! Or, are you still trying to figure out why retail sales taxes in Ohio are calculated at the point of purchase, except this one? Just because someone felt like making it that way? Do you know how expensive it must be for them to manage the payments of businesses that are collecting sales taxes for multiple jurisdictions, when every other vendor in the state is issuing their sales tax payments from their own county? Did they just decide to give themselves a self-inflicted headache? It's not just Stark County, Dave. It's the entire state. Again, people on here could really absorb a lot more information if they did a lot more listening, and a lot less arguing. Seriously though, I'm trying to be kind, but you're clearly baiting me to continue the debate when you actually already found the answer, whether you know it or not. I'm not trying to be mean, but you have to admit that you were being incredibly foolish to think that people aren't crossing county lines to save money.
  13. Excusing away his well-known negatives and calling them "prejudices" when pointed out by his detractors is quite an extensive reach. Don't you agree?
  14. Unless, of course, the deck is stacked so heavily against a person fitting the qualifications, background, history and characteristics of someone in that position. Then logic needs to prevail over personal opinion.
  15. Here's the problem. There's about 100 of us on this forum that will pay it to get the new arena. But unfortunately, the other 500,000+ people out there are the ones who will decide if we get it.
  16. Alright. I'm done. I'm taking back everything I've said against his hiring so far. I see now that he's perfect for the job.
  17. I wouldn't have even answered this, but since you did, I will comment. I think from your past posts that you are a few decades younger than me, but I hope you realize that some people just have a love affair with the guy, and are saying that the education level doesn't matter just to try to justify his hiring to everyone else. I'd like to see how much they think that acceptable and/or required education levels don't matter in other aspects of their lives as well. I think you'd find that it's just being used to fit this particular argument. Fortunately, most of us understand that a square peg doesn't fit in a round hole, unless you really bend it, turn it sideways and force it until you can find a way to squeeze it in there.
  18. But perception is reality, in this case. Many people WILL see this as a Zips Basketball facility, no matter how you frame it. We just have to hope that enough of them will not. I said this earlier. Although we may be making some comparisons to the Cleveland sin tax issue, there is a huge difference. Cleveland was doing this to fund a new stadium for their Major League Baseball team. We're doing it for a college basketball team which most people in Summit County have never watched in their entire lives. I'd bet that the criticism from the general public for building a new football stadium for Akron football, which was an absolute necessity based on the condition of the Rubber Bowl, will not remotely compare to the "need" we will be attempting to communicate to them regarding the replacement of a 30 year old basketball facility. And that was for a football stadium in which we never had to ask the public to pay for it.
  19. The sad thing is, all of the JT lovers think the nicknames and mockery will come from the Akron people who are against his hiring, but the embarrassing part is that it's going to come from the rest of the nation. In fact, it already is. Like I said before, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
  20. On question #3, I do know something he's proven to be REALLY good at. It's similar to the word you used, and coincidentally it also begins with an L and ends with an R. You just messed up a few letters in between.
  21. It seems like I've learned a few things as this subject grows, and I read more and more posts. 1) Trust and Integrity really are important characteristics in a leader. 2) There are some people who REALLY, truly believe that this is a "he's earned his way to the top" situation. Unbelievable.
  22. How about when you add that the hypothetical candidate ended up on the cover of a hypothetical national magazine, documenting his very long and checkered history at his previous employers? You conveniently left out that part. Please, provide us with the data on his "increasing responsibilities" and "proven performance" on his "rise" to a top executive position after only two years ? Actually, the more I think about it, you make it out to be quite the heartwarming and inspiring "climbing the corporate ladder" story that should motivate all of us to work hard so that someday we can achieve great success in our own careers
