  1. I think patience might rule in this deal. I said from the start of these discussions a few years ago that we might be as much as 10 years away from getting anything done. Let me tell you what I know. The University PREFERS to have their own arena. Wait, let me put that another way...they WANT their own arena. They want to own their basketball facility. Just one problem...there's no way to pay for it in the near future.
  2. I like it !!...LOL The problem is, the people we will have to rely on to go along with this, if "Plan A" is going to work, are people who have likely never stepped foot in Rhodes Arena, and may never step foot in the new one either.
  3. 1) Wanting to move up from the MAC is not a new revelation. 2) We shouldn't have a problem rallying Zips fans around this project. The problem will be selling this to the "naysayers" who are far outside of our circle, and are still laughing about the fact that we built a 50 million dollar football stadium. If they don't get it, "Plan A" will be out the window very soon.
  4. Sure, but 77 million doesn't have too many doable options. Remember, from day one, this has been a money issue, above and beyond anything else.
  5. No doubt, that will be the approach. It will be interesting to see how people will react to this.
  6. Oh boy. I missed the part where this is Pending on voter approval of a tax increase. Seeing where the sin tax debacle in Cuyahoga County had gone, in terms of public opinion about it paying for sports complexes, I'm not encouraged. I have to wonder how the retailers will be feeling about this also. We just had a sales tax increase, and we'll soon have another?
  7. You guys beat me to it. I was just about the post the update. I'm not jumping out of my chair, but it is a step in the right direction.
  8. That may be true, but my point is that it's already an unbelievable drain of resources with a school like Akron, compared to other higher programs who actually bring in some revenue from their programs.
  9. Yes, a faculty head was quoted with his thoughts about the possibility of this guy being his boss, and what he presumed would be the opinion of most other faculty members. It appeared in a recent article. It was not an endorsement, and that is being kind. I hope I can find it again. My wife and I are actually both laughing about the fact that probably a good portion of the faculty, who would all be below him on the totem pole, would have a higher level of education. Pretty comical.
  10. Sorry to keep getting back to the same point. But really, how are some people apparently satisfied with what they saw from Pohl when he was able to put 3 points on the board? Forget whether you personally think he's the man, or not the man. From a pure production standpoint, you have to admit that it's unacceptably horrible, right? Quick Question: Would that also be "fine" if he "doesn't do anything bad" and puts 3 points on the board in September? Or, even 10 or 14 points? I just don't get how a complete lack of scoring is not very concerning, at the very least.
  11. I'll breathe a sigh of relief.....for now. Lets face it, throwing money around when it comes to the women's basketball program is not really an option for a school like Akron. Between Title IX requirements, and lack of attendance or TV revenue, the program is already a huge drain on the budget.
  12. Who said anything about being shocked? How about...sick.
  13. Thanks. That's how I feel right now. My first thought when I heard the news this afternoon was.......You've GOT to be kidding me.
  14. That's a fair assessment. Either blindness or alcohol tended to impair judgment on Saturday, apparently. Both offensive units mustered a combined 6 points, in a damn scrimmage? And some people are praising our QB who took quite a few of the snaps? I may not be as willing as some to place the entire problem on our lack of good QB play, but some of it was indeed glaring.
  15. After hitting a success "Goal"?? And after losing a big group of Seniors? If that's not the perfect time to move along if you've been considering it, there probably isn't one.
  16. Dave, I think there's always been people on this board who don't get this. You do. This entire notion that players come here and "buy into the system" and just want to win basketball games, and don't care much about their playing time is total crap. I'm very close to a kid right now who is being heavily recruited by major schools across the country in football. What's his #1 priority?? No surprise. He says, "I just want to go where I know I can play."
  17. No, I was asking if you paid attention to the fact that some people are defending the status quo before you posted and said that this wasn't the case.
  18. Have you read any of the posts in this thread before you posted yourself?
  19. Folks. Over the last couple of years, it's obvious the offense has fallen backwards. And it's a Bowden offense that's proven to be a point scoring machine. It didn't just start by scoring a combined 6 points from two offensive units in a spring game. And it's not because we have a world-class defense. I've said it before, but the performances against Ken+ and UMass at the end of last season should have been alarming to anyone who is not an eternal optimist, especially when they came about 8 games after the potential-showing performance in the Big House. When coaches sense that there may not be growth, they need to prepare to change directions. We very well may not have the guys on the offensive side of the ball to get the job done. I don't see why some people feel the need to get defensive or take a "stay the course" attitude when we can bring in a former ACC starter and light a spark under the offense that may desperately need one in August.
  20. I don't know if anyone else noticed this.... The Tuesday night game in Nov. against BG is listed as "Blackout Night" on this new schedule. Could this be when we see the black version of the new uniforms that some people have been talking about?
  21. Some of what we hear just seems so outrageous and improbable, especially from a cost/return perspective, that I have to wonder if they are just self-created publicity stunts for their company.
  22. It's just all crazy. I mean, the U already determined years ago that it wasn't worth the improvements. And that was just to continue to make it usable as an OUTDOOR football stadium 6 times a year. I think these guys are really living in a fantasy world. One idea fell through, so they have another one that is even more bizarre. It's actually getting entertaining, and really makes for some great conversation between friends.
  23. Lets not be naïve. The good coaches who attract these good players gravitate towards those who are able to pay them the largest amounts of money. And, not every school has "toys". On your 2nd paragraph, yes, this does help a MAC-level school considerably in terms of he problems we all have funding our athletic programs. We are all becoming more and more reliant on private money, and none of us get very much of it, in comparison to the most recognized athletic programs.
  24. Yes, the article is crap. No way are teams going to travel to play in that arena. And our new football stadium didn't cure our problems either. But, we can't deny that money, and the resources that come from having money, has made the difference between the winners and losers in big-time college athletics. Money does buy wins. However, I don't see this being a frequent occurrence for an athletic program like BG. At the very least, for MAC schools, a donation like this provides some relief as the public money that can be spent on college athletics continues to dwindle.
  25. That was good Dave, very good. I will say that I still have not used either of those two words in any professional writings. But, there's a first for everything.
