ZachTheZip
UA is automatically placed in tier 4 because of something beyond our control: state-mandated open-enrollment. I believe that we would be somewhere around tier 2 if the people in Columbus would allow us to drop that.
Zipsrifle
I'm sure these rankings are very similar to the College Football Rankings. The top 50 schools get lots of attention, and then after that they just let a computer program figure it out. As an example, when I was in school, I ran across a ranking of Engineering schools in the U.S. I don't even think Akron was listed despite the fact that our SAE teams took 1st place in 3 of the 4 national competitions we entered. The US News site lists our fall 07 acceptance rate at 82% which is fairly high but apparently not everyone is accepted at UA. Plus, that's only for the General College ... the degree granting colleges have their own acceptance criteria. Some of the Tier 4 schools have acceptance rates in the 50's. A big part of the rankings is input from people in academia nationwide on how they perceive our reputation so that's what has to be improved to move up from T4.
