I went to the Cinnci game (im from Los Angeles Cali)....And I saw zippy for the first time...And i can honestly say i was kinda disappointed at how non-intimidating the zip looks. Then I watch espn and i see all of the other mascot and they're actually look like they could do some damage in a jersey and some pads....LOL.Anyone else thing the zip should be made a lil more masculine for a sport like men's football..... and if not masculine....juss a lil more mean. She doesnt look agile, strong, or determined to do anything but put a smile on a little kids face.Im not trying to insult zippy.....juss wondering how u guys feel about that, or if there is a reason behind it.

Last year I went to a game with a friend (his first Akron game) and he was kind of let down when he saw Zippy. He loved the "Fear The Roo" marketing campaign and was expecting to see something along those lines. I love Zippy but I could see how he felt, although I'm not sure you could take the "Fear The Roo" charcater and translate it into a true mascot. You couldn't match the intensity in the caricature. That's such a great artist rendering. And I would not want just another generic mascot. Zippy is definitely not generic. I would like to see the persons in the suit do a little more with him, though.

Zippy doesn't have to look ferocious, because Zippy is the anti-mascot!!!Besides, mascots that have to look mean are generally overcompensating for something....p.s. this post or any posts critical of Zippy should be removed by moderators because we have the number one mascot in college sports.

Yup...I dont see why a mascot has to look fierce or menacing. I know many of you dont like to make this comparison, but look at Brutus Buckeye. He doesn't look fierce or anything... who cares? If you are referring to the Golden Flush's rat with wings, that thing is far from anything like you are asking, let alone the fact that any reference to that is just wrong

Exactly. As has been stated on here before, Zippy is the anti-mascot. Unfortunately, IMHO, Zippy has actually lost a bit of his classic identity over the past couple years. The fact that this question was posed illustrates the fact that Zippy has to be re-explained for many of our younger fans. That's fine - we should be/have been doing this for every incoming freshman class! I'm afraid our alumni may not have done a great job in explaining and passing down Zippy's traditional aura. The controversy over Zippy being a girl is silly. Zippy is a boy. That's a big part of what makes Zippy's wimpiness comical and, frankly, uniquely brilliant. Zippy is supposed to be afraid of the other school's mascots. The only way Zippy is supposed to ever win a "fight" with another mascot is when Zippy ducks and turns away and the other mascot "accidentally" trips on Zippy's tail. I haven't seen that classic Zippy schtick played out w/ another teams' mascot in at least a couple of years now; it used to be an every-game occurance. Here, Zippy's male gender is necessary for the comedy of Zippy's aura to work; if Zippy were a female getting beat up and scared by another teams' mascot, well, needless to say that would just be completely wrong. Call the cops. Yes, Zippy has a pouch but give me a break - Godzilla also lays eggs but no one thinks of Godzilla as being a girl. Likewise w/ Zippy. Zippy's not a real kangaroo folks. Zippy is the anti-mascot because he is clumsy and wimpy; that's the aura of Zippy. Zippy is supposed to walk in tiny little baby steps, head slightly down all the while wringing his hands. It's what Zippy does. He doesn't run around fast & furious w/ his head held high. Zippy is supposed to be non-confrontational and shy and timid and insecure and friendly. The fact that Zippy is the soft and chubby anti-mascot is what is so darn special about him. A rough and tough kangaroo is just stupid. The Fear the Roo campaign is brilliant precisely because it is spot-on tongue-in-cheek. A literal seriousness in this regard would be

I certainly have no problem with a newer fan asking this sort of question. After all (if I recall correctly) jstoudemire is D Bowser's brother (correct js?) and this would mean he would have very limited exposure to Zippy and his/her history. But I agree with the general notion that Zippy simply isn't meant to be a viscious or intimidating being. I'll probably upset a few people with this comparison, but I remember when my kids were younger and Barney the purple dinosaur was popular. I always felt that Barney's appeal was very similar to Zippy's, but Zippy was the ORIGINAL large, warm, un-intimidating, always smiling, stuffed creature. I don't think we could or should change him/her now. Now whatever "Roo" depiction happens to be on the helmet/uniform is another question entirely.

Absolutely, Zippy is more of a friendly looking mascot then some of the other ones out there, and I don't mind it. I think having Zippy look friendly and approachable helps embed our university into the minds on younsters. If anything, we need to have Zippy make more appearances at locations where their will be lots of kids so we can capitalize on that friendly mascot look. But on the otherside I like my mean looking Zippy as well.

Godzilla reproduces A-sexualy. if you payed attention to the movie you would know that.(I don't know if I acomplished anything other than make myself look like a dork)I actually like zippy being a girl it makes her a little more uniqe
