Z-P
Got to give it up for T Pluto this morning..........that was a NICE piece in the ABJ. I especially like his "local" props..........someone needs to be "point" about getting local guys the opportunity to play D1A................isn't that what a "local" University is for? Helping "local" constituents? Just MHO..........
GP1
I especially like his "local" props..........someone needs to be "point" about getting local guys the opportunity to play D1A................isn't that what a "local" University is for? Helping "local" constituents? Just MHO.......... Actually, no. The purpose of a university is to get the best students possible and educate them; however, I don't think you were writing about the overall University. An even bigger NO goes for athletics. The purpose of the athletic department is to field teams that win games regardless of where the players come from. We saw too much charity for local players being handed out with Lee Owens. We don't need to go down that road again. I'm just shocked that that sneaky prick Pluto didn't find some space to credit Owens for the success of the basketball team this year. He could have said: "We can't forget that Lee Owens, the former football coach of Akron and the apple of my eye, deserves some credit for the success of the basketball team this year. On several occasions, he said 'hello' to the basketball players walking down the halls of JAR Arena's administrative offices".
Guest Front Runner
Easy, killer. Not so fast. Terry Pluto has a motive for the puffery in this morning's Beacon - it's called the Bandwagon and he wants to jump on. Typical.
Z-P
GP1.......... "Helping" includes educating and everything else a University provides a community......i.e., the Arts @ EJT etc......... I didn't say "Giving the athletes a chance to play" that's only part of a University's responsibilities to it's community.......again, IMHO. "Shop here first" for athletes.............again, IMHO. Can't you guys let go of Lee Owens? C'mon.............it's reeeeeeeally getting old GP.............my man, go back and check rosters for "local" guys and you'll see we weren't OVERPOPULATED with them in the past. I'm just saying for my tax buck, I think the coaches should LOOK locally first.................let me back up a bit...........you calling Superman a "local"????? How far away is far away here????? Maybe we are on the same page after all. I'm still saying "NICE JOB THIS MORNING TP".........that's all.
Zippy989
Nice to see two articles on the front page along with big color picture of MC going for the ball...BUT... Bandwagon comment above is right.... TP sees UA building something in both basetball and football and he doesn't want to be left out.... The telling comments in the story are highlighted below... Worthy of attention? Where has the Beacon been?? Covering the Golden Flushes.. that's where... Huge hearts carry Akron over Toledo By Terry Pluto The Zips were the team that wouldn't quit Monday night. Akron was playing without its leading scorer, senior Darryl Peterson. He suffered a concussion in practice. They had played their past 11 games without leading rebounder Jeremiah Wood, out for the year with knee surgery. So what happened? ``Somehow, we just got it done,'' Zips coach Keith Dambrot said. He then shook his head, searching for the right words. ``I've never been prouder of a team than this one,'' he said. ``That includes two state championship teams (at St. Vincent-St. Mary) and when we were ranked No. 1 at Ashland (NCAA Division II). Those teams were really good. These guys... '' He shook his head again, trying to say it just right. ``I see a lot of heart,'' he said. ``Just a bunch of guys with a lot of heart.'' It beat long enough and hard enough to upset Toledo 81-79 in overtime before 3,169 fans at Rhodes Arena where Akron is 10-1 and one the quietest stories on the local basketball season. Akron was picked second-to-last in the Mid-American Conference East Division race. The Zips were coming off a 13-15 season and lost a couple of key seniors. Toledo was picked to win the MAC West. But in Dambrot's first year as head coach, the Zips are 14-7 overall. And they are tied for second place in the MAC East with an 8-5 record. They have won seven of their past nine games. It's a fun team with several local kids, a team worthy of Akron's attention There were so many heroes in this game, but the biggest was Romeo Travis. He played 38 minutes. He put a game-high 21 points next to his name. A game-high 13 rebounds next to his name. A game-high four steals and a game-high three blocks. Now you know why the Zips 6-foot-7 forward said, ``I'm tired. I'm exhausted. I can't think about doing anything but going to sleep right now.'' Travis was relentless, elbows out, dueling for every rebound, driving hard for each of his points. At some key parts of the game, he even covered Keith Triplett, Toledo's leading scorer, and he's a 6-foot-3 guard. ``There were times when I looked over to the bench for a sub, but Coach told me that I'm not coming out,'' Travis said. So he stayed and played. The whole Akron team stayed and played, at least what's left of it. In their first meeting with Toledo, the now-injured Peterson had 20 points and eight rebounds. He averages 15 points and is the only senior starter. His absence left Akron with two seniors -- Rick McFadden and seldom-used Nick Meyers. McFadden had his best game of the season, scoring 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He grabbed the final Zips rebound in overtime, was fouled and dropped in two clutch free throws. He also covered Toledo's All-MAC star Triplett for most of the game. Triplett finished with a very tough 16 points, meaning McFadden outscored him. Who would have predicted that at the start of the evening? Freshman help Just as who would have guessed freshman Bubba Walther would ignite Akron early. He was scoreless in his last game against Can't State. But this game, he delivered 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Walther has sticks for arms and legs. He lofts a jumper from hip level, and it seems high enough to orbit the moon before it comes down near the rim. Buchtel product Matt Futch helped out in overtime, scoring four of his six points and grabbing a couple of clutch rebounds. It was a strange game for Akron, which was 5-of-14 from the foul line the first 40 minutes of regulation, then made 8-of-10 in the five-minute overtime when it meant the most. Don't even ask why. For some things, there are no rational explanations. Just as there are no logic reason for Akron to be two games behind first-place Miami, and doing it mostly with players who were not highly recruited. Some, such as Dru Joyce III, weren't recruited at all. But the sophomore point guard just plays solid, smart and gutsy basketball each game. He had eight points and seven assists while keeping the offense under control under the heat some of intense pressure. Even the final score was amazing. Akron scored 81 points despite using only one player (Travis, 10.8 points) averaging double-figures. ``Don't ask me how we did it,'' Dambrot said. ``Sometimes, you just get a group of guys who are so good together, they just surprise everyone.'' Worthy of attention? Where has the Beacon been?? Covering the Golden Flushes.. that's where... The past is the past. ABJ coverage this morning was pretty good. (Although I think Peterson is a Jr not Sr -- It's tough to catch that wagon in full stride so I let a few mistakes pass !?!?!?). My thoughts. The ABJ jumping on the bandwagon - Good Terrry Pluto on the bandwagon -- Good My Neighbors on the bandwagon -- Good City of Akron basketball fans on the bandwagon -- Good Sold out games and out growing the JAR - Priceless............. I really dont care how we get there or who helps us. The important thing is getting there, being a contender and increasing the fan base. The ABJ can and will help to reach out to new fans. If they suddenly wake up and jump on the BB/FB bandwagon - more power to them. Who wouldn't want to see a "Zips Football preview pullout section" or "Zips Basketball pullout" someday in the ABJ ? There's no reason it can't happen if the programs start winning and the fan base swells. It's all about selling papers. As for the flushes coverage -- I hate to remind everyone - 6yrs, 20 wins, NCAA appearance, NIT appearances, blah blah blah blah....equals some coverage. How nice is it to see this run ending ????? zipper
I think the point about the Beacon is just this: they should be covering Akron football and basketball ALL THE TIME, not just when they're winning. This is their philosophical mistake. They think they're covering Akron more now, for the sole reason that they are now a "story." This is their coverage plan. They don't get that they should be covering Akron all the time, that it helps fan turnout, and creates a mindset in the local community that this is THEIR school, and it should be supported win or lose. Hope that explains the frustration with the ABJ, even though they are now supportive. It's ethereal and it'll be gone with the next bump in the road. I know we should take it while we can get it, but you kind of feel like there's something a little cheap about their current bandwagon coverage. It would be nice if they could use a copy editor with internet access to check Pluto's work in the future. Memo to Terry: 1. The story is only a quiet one because the local paper that's all of 1 mile (if that) from the JAR doesn't cover the local team. If it's a quiet story ... it has a little to do with your paper. Printing the wrong coupons and ads doesn't help make it louder either. 2. Peterson is JUNIOR! 3. The seniors on this team are: Mario Collins Nick Meyers Rick McFadden. Get to know them. Maybe interview one of them for the first time before they graduate this year. Please make a note of it! GoZips!

Zips Win!
GP I realize Pluto ticks everyone off when he credits Owens for the football programs success. Actually, I give Owens more credit for the basketball teams success than anything else. If Owens didn't do the University a huge favor in taking the Ashland job, I'm not sure there was another fund raising position available for Hipsher to take and therefore he may still be coaching and we may be looking at a 5-8 conference record, not 8-5.
