AGMC/CSU

 Absolutely yes! What on earth is that all about?! That's exactly what the city of Akron and the U of Akron do NOT need! I thought AGMC and Summa were trying to cooperate with UA and NEUCOM for the betterment of the city of Akron?!
I interviewed at NEOUCOM a few weeks ago and they said that within the next 2-3 years they will be extending their BS/MD program to CSU.

Two thoughts on this.1) There are a lot of people in Cleveland pushing to solidify that town as the Medical Hub. This is one of the early battles for where NEOCOM will be located. They aren't about to let UofA win out over CSU and IMO, this is a huge coup for them. 2) I think some of the folks at UofA need to take some heat for not putting together an air tight case for a hometown hospital.

Ziprifle, what do you mean by this? Are you referring to a possible UA Medical School w/ a UA Hospital?
I'm referring to the fact that the CSU BioEng dept nailed down the deal with AGMC and UA didn't. You would think that UA would have an edge just because of the Engineering Dept. reputation and the location. Now, I don't know squat about how the UA BioEng compares to the CSU BioEng, but I know that UA Eng. as a whole is more respected than CSU.

The writing is on the wall for NEOUCOM to move and become affiliated with UA. Together with the Biomedical Corridor and the new BioInnovation Institute, the necessary components are aligning for an academic medical center in Akron. Given Summa's sponsorship of the stadium project and their feature on the Campaign for UA's website (with no mention of AGMC or Children's), I would suspect Summa to be the primary hospital entity and AGMC was upset about it.Nonetheless, this is a big coup for Cleveland. I wish AGMC, Summa, Children's, Aultman, and Mercy would align under a University of Akron Medical Center in the future, but I'm guessing it wouldn't happen because there would be no local competition. However, such a unified group would compete with UPMC, the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the OSU Medical Center.Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy are the only major programs that UA is missing in having all major academic offerings. I would love to see it happen and know it's best for the region and research.

I am a grad of UA BME and co-oped at the Cleveland Clinic. I know for a fact that CSU doesn't even have a BME Department or associated BS or MS offerings. That's part of what makes this such an unfortunate situation. UA has all the faculty/programs and location to support AGMC's needs. What I find ironic is that the UARF and UA Office of Technology Transfer support CSU, so much of the expertise probably goes through UA anyhow. Sadly though, none of the research development will.

BME grad here too! I wish CSU would keep it's nose out of Akron. They probably get drowned out by Case and want to get some footing somewhere. From my conversations with faculty, CSU is looked down upon. They wanted to know why in the world I would apply there for grad school. Of course it was for $$$, but Neoucom and summa need to keep it here in Akron. With our world class polymer program, well respected engineering program, and biomedical engineering department there is no reason to look to a school that has a very limited bioengineering program (they offer a phD program I believe and it's only in a couple of areas of the field). Look at the relationship between the cleveland clinic, university hospitals, and case.

Well, it would appear then that there is more behind moving this to CSU than simply picking one program over the other. I have a feeling that this will be a wake-up call and Dr. P will make sure UA has it's nose in ANY venture between Akron hospitals and university research in the future.
You will notice from my question -- I suspect -- that I have no experience in bio-medical engineering, but here goes. Is there any actual academic or experiential connection between BME and the "engineering" that is taught in university engineering departments? I thought this was connected completely to natural science, medicine and possibly genetics. Or are we talking about engineering of medical devices? Help me out. There must be others wondering this too. Thanks.

The bme program emphasizes the design of medical devices (prosthetics, orthopedics, instrumentation and imaging). The philosophy is to train bme's to be engineers first at akron. Little if none is really covered in genetics. In fact, some bme graduates accept positions in other areas in industry (energy, automotive, controls applications).
