How could this have been prevented

Recommended Posts

So Akron's soccer team, which is a perennial playoff team, loses a home game because of the weather to a team in Chicago? Seriously? It's totally unacceptable, given the level of overall investment in the U over the last few years, that a proper drainage system hasn't been installed on the soccer field. I'm sure there is probably a good reason why that hasn't happened but what about this-- why was there no contingency put in place for this highly likely scenario. This was something that could be entirely anticipated-- bad weather in NEOhio in late November and a Zips soccer team making a run in the tourney. How could there not be a ready alternative that had been cleared and qualified (such as playing some games at SVSM or whatever else is needed to make an alternative location qualify as a "home field" for the Zips), entirely obviating any opportunity for the NCAA to move the game.I still don't understand why the football practice field, the field house, and eventually the new stadium cannot be utilized for soccer. Yes, a soccer field is different dimensions but that doesn't mean it wouldn't fit on those surfaces. I understand soccer wants and deserves its own facility, but why hasn't there been some sort of contingency plan in place given the number of facilities created over the past few years. I still can't imagine why the soccer team can't share the stadium-- clearly playing on artificial surfaces is increasingly accepted in the world of soccer.Seriously, this is just a stupid F* up. UA faces enough head winds-- it doesn't have to create obstacles to be overcome.

Seriously? I JUST posted the same thing (in principle) in the other thread... not that it matters and I could care less, just pointing it outI fail to see why the University would consider putting turf down for both soccer and football when there is already a soccer facility separate of the football stadium. Yes it would solve the problem, but having separate facilities for each sport gives our athletic department a better overall look.I just think its time a new soccer stadium/facility comes into existence.

Hey, this is just a thought. I remember watching Zips soccer matches in the Rubber Bowl before Lee Jackson Field was put in. The Rubber Bowl has artificial turf and despite it's condition it is still home field for football. Wouldn't it be suitable?

From my understanding (and by no means am I any kind of expert), although soccer games can be played on artificial turf, they really should be played on grass. I've been told that the last time they used artificial turf in the championship game was when we took second back in the 80's. Since this is the tournament, it seems the NCAA allowed the use of an artificial turf as an emergency use, but now that they have a few days to properly plan, they send it to the school with a grass field. I haven't seen the field first hand, but it must have been really bad conditions to not only call off the first game, but to tell the NCAA it won't be ready by Sunday. The issue is the draining, but like some others have said, this is not something that can be changed overnight. HOPEFULLY we win and the field gets the tlc it needs to be able to play the next game at home because WE EARNED IT.

My first soccer post ever. Since I don't know anything about soccer, I'll just comment on the topic.Who is to blame? God gave us snow so I guess he is to blame. If anyone wants to take it up with him, do it today or tomorrow as Sunday is his day off. I believe the outdoor football practice field is lined for soccer. Where in the heck would they put the people coming to watch the game? There is no way in heck that they should line InfoCision Stadium with soccer lines. It is a D-1A football stadium and needs to look like one and not a high school field.I can see that everyone is in a tizzy about this. It does suck, but to sit around trying to blame someone for a once in a lifetime event is silly. Overreacting and trying to come up with solutions to a once in a lifetime event is not productive. SH!+ happens. If the Zips take care of business Sunday, the ten day forecast looks OK for this time of year in Akron. The snow should be gone and the field playable.

zippyrifle32,Thank you for the reminder as to why I moved from Ohio. It's only Thanksgiving and the weather is like this already. That just blows.
Nice to remind most of the Zips fans, who by the way still live locally, about how much better it is not to be here. Thanks for that GP1. Great contribution. As one who lived all over the country over the last 20 years (including Northern and Southern California, where the weather is fan-freaking-tastic) before moving back to Akron and loving being back, I can say with some authority that the 3 good seasons can never be as sweet as they are in places like this, where you have a season that kicks your ass. I'm not sure where you live now, but I for one would want to live nowhere else but here, even with its warts and its winters.GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZipper

personally, I love it!
I wouldn't say that I love it, but I will say that some people have weary souls, and expect the world to treat them like needy, infirmed royalty. I enjoy my trips to places of mild climate, but I would not want to live there. We are the the ilk of hardy body and psyche. We need not be coddled by our environment. We ask not for each month to resemble the last.
