tonight's game - who has to show up

Guys...I don't know how to feel about this one. This was not the same VCU team we faced last year. They are basically a one-man show with a couple of role players, and they still nearly had us put away at halftime. Valiant effort to make a little run in the last few minutes to make the game entertaining to listen to near the end. We took nearly half of our shots from 3-point range, which still concerns me. Luckily we were making enough of them after halftime to give us a chance at a comeback. VCU on the other hand took about 1/3 of their shots from 3-point range, and got a lot of baskets from close range. And once again, I see one of those ugly Bardo stat lines....14 minutes, 4 fouls, 0 points, and 1 rebound. It looks like we have a couple of "practice games" (that's what they will be) coming up, and then a road test at Rhode Island before we start conference play. Lets hope for the best.

Nothing to be concerned about on the 3-pt shots. In the first half, the Zips took only eight 3-pt shots vs. nineteen 2-pt shots. In the 2nd half--playing catch-up--the Zips took sixteen 3-pt shots and thirteen 2-pt shots. Of those 16, they made 7, and 2 were likely the last second sloppy bombs. Also, just because I occasionally like to stir it up...ASSIST to TURNOVER Ratios for the VCU Game:Humpty = 2:1 (4:2)D. Rob = 1:4

I didn't get to answer the topic question yesterday, but my answer today is the same, senior Nate Linhart. Not just for last nights game, but for the season. He needs to step up and lead by example. I have only seen two games (NC A&T and Pitt) live this year, but his play seems to be important to a young Zips lineup. I would like to see him improve on the offensive side of the ball. I don't mean score more points, but better shot selection and better passing. He is capable of both.If I had a second vote it would be the teacher in charge of low post scoring. Looks like we struggle to score in the paint. I thought Nikola played very well against Pitt in the paint. If our production doesn't start to change in the next half dozen games, I think I would give Cvetinovic some more minutes. If we want to do well in March we must develop a low post game.

BirdZip...lol..nothing to worry about. We're all fans, and it's certainly nice to see that Humpty was efficient with the basketball last night. I hope it continues. Actually, I was somewhat surprised to hear KD say last night on the radio that Humpty wasn't very good in the first half last night. I think he may have been talking about his shot selection, because he wasn't hurting us with turnovers. Dr. Z...good point. We need to start scoring in the paint for a number of different reasons. We seem to have a desire to shoot a good amount of 3-pointers, and those are going to be easier once we have the inside threat to play an inside-out game. I just don't think we'll survive conference play by passing the ball around the perimeter and shooting 3-pointers, as we have a tendency to do at times. We need to make opposing guards feel the need to sometimes sag into the paint to guard against entry passes. And remember, our conference teams will study us a little more than most of these teams have done.
