Why my dad hates basketball....

and why I'm giving his view more and more thought. I'm not going to blame this game on anyone -- the Zips shot horribly and nothing seem to go down. Not to mention they threw the ball away throughout the second half.

My dad on the other hand can't stand basketball because it is such a subjective game. The referees call the game so incredibly subjectively they make the game nearly unwatchable. My dad likens it to ice skating and consistently says its no different than ice skating -- three guys on the court decide the game nearly every night. At one point today the refs actually told Cedric Middleton not to cover Turner Battle to close -- what the hell was that? It's really quite disgusting. The call what they want -- a guy jumps into another guy and the guy jumping into the guy gets the foul. A guy stands flat footed hands straight in the air -- the guy with the ball bounces into him and they call the foul against the guy standing there. My dad wonders at what point will they have judges on the sidelines to judge the shot -- giving the people different numbers of point for different shots -- depending on skill and other subjective things.

It really is a terrible game when the officials are involved.

I know a lot of people will say this is the result of today's game -- this has been my dad's opinion for years and can hardly watch the game. My dad has been right about a lot of things all my life and I'm afraid this may be another one I'll have to chalk up to his wisdom. I can only hope things get better someday and the basketball is actually decided on the floor.

What a painful game to watch.

Can't still sucks!

It's funny but the refs can call a pretty consistent game and then in a 2-3 minute span make some calls that totally swing the game and momentum-- after that, it's all an uphill battle.

This game just came down to some woefull shooting on the Zips part -- I don't think the Buffalo D was that tight. We just didn't fire well on some wide open looks and easy shots under the hoop. Too bad. A nice opportunity got away.

Go Zips

Sometimes it is really hard to read some of the babyish postgame dribble on this board. Akron shot like crap and lost to a good team in Buffalo. The officials did not lose the game for the Zips, shooting like garbage the first half did. Being up by one at halftime was a joke as the Zips should have been up by 15+. More missed layups, bad crosscourt passing and Joyce being invisible for yet another game is the reason why the team lost. Middleton is the best guard we have. Bubba takes bad shots and then argues about it on the bench. Grow up kid, it's March.

When fans bitch and moan about the stripes and lost by 16+ you show ignorance and blinders as to the real reasons for the loss. Please educate yourself. If Daddy don't like hoops keep him in the damn rest home. This is college basketball and no one should aplogize for the game. You could make the same comments about college football, and many on this board did, after the Hawaii / Michigan State game. Memories are short around here.

Win or lose this team has exceeded expectations and deserves to have a big crowd at the JAR Monday night. I will be there.

Don't be an asshole -- Mr. calling people out before the last home game and saying we weren't real fans because we weren't responding to your junk - then you sit at home and watch it on TV.

I tried to point out to you it wasn't this game in general -- but officiating ruins basketball. If you are going to tell me you enjoy the officiating in the MAC - then apparently you don't watch any games.

I said it was poor shooting that lost the game and throwing the ball away. Read the hole post before you blast other people with your ignorant dribble. Why else would you watch a game and an announcer say things like he's a rookie he's never going to get that call? Get that call -- a foul is a foul -- there is no this guy gets these fouls and these guys don't.

Okay -- start by saying Akron did not lose to UB because of the refs. You gotta throw the rock thru the rim, no matter what.

But, I wanted to relate this story that is one of the funniest I can ever remember at a basketball game. I was sitting behind the elderly ex-president of the small college whose game I was watching, and he was talking with a current administrator about the game of basketball. At one point, without doubt agreeing with Big Zip's dad, he asked -- "Since every other call in basketball is subjective, why don't they just eliminate the lines on the court and let the referees decide where the sidelines and baseline are too?" There are times when I want to ask that same question. But its still a lovely game. Not The Beautiful Game of soccer, but still lovely. :)

Now -- if Akron can make it to the MAC title game, they will have 21 wins. IF they lose at that point, I think it would make them 21-10. That COULD still be good enough to earn an at-large bid -- but probably less than 50-50. The probably need to beat either Miami, Buffalo or Can't along the way.

Go Zips!!!

I think that's what we are saying about this game.......

I would hardly compare this game to the MSU/Hawaii game and I dont think any of the posts above make such a claim. Don't you think your post is a little abrasive and quick to the trigger ? Fact is, a lot of calls in sports are subjective, to indicate that whether you come out on top of those calls or not does not effect the flow of the game is completely ignorant. It might have something to do with why HOME teams win the majority of games - close calls do make a difference and the way they fall. Big Zip makes a good insightfull post here and you rip on him. Thats wrong :nono:

Relax man, I think Big Zip was just making a general point, noone here blames the refs for a 10+ point loss. But dont be ignorant that momemtum swings come off of subjective calls much like 3 pointers or turnovers.

Whatever. It was the refs fault, a few calls go against the team and that cost Akron the game. Momentumn goes both ways and the lack of shooting the ball into the hole was the difference. BZ's point is 35% correct and 65% whine.

If you don't like the game, turn it off. What is the point of the post to begin with.

NCAA Basketball is THE MOST POPULAR RATINGS SPORT IN THE NATION! If you do not like it, watch Bassmasters or a Hunting Show... maybe even an old Ohio State/Michigan game on ESPN Classic.

Yeah, you'd rather bash the players. They gave it their all in a very difficult environment - 6k of nothing but blue. They put up the shots when they had their looks and tonight they didn't fall. And all you come to the table with is crap about the players. I love the way this team play -- pull the trigger if your open, push the ball up the court, make plays rather then wait for the "right time" - It's KD style - obviously, you are not on board.

Maybe you should atay home on Monday and watch the game again on TV.

I never said the kids should quit - or that they mailed it in as others did on the board, I just called it what it was - a bad shooting day. BZ insults the fabric of the game and you rally to him but calling out empirical facts gets me shouted down and called a fairweather fan? Please.

BTW... I missed the game the other night because my kids and wife were sick. I am such a SOB for not being there.

I guess I just dont agree with your assessment of Bubba and Joyce.

Bubba took one questionable three on a fast break - Of course, that's where he has been most effective. All the others were open looks, he is a shooter and lately he's been off. Shooters should shoot their way threw slumps. He will come around and has a big furture at Akron.

Joyce had foul trouble - I think Buffalo actually got seperation in the game when he landed his 4th. Anyway, the guy always quietly goes about his business and is a very good field general without getting many accolades.

Middelton had a great game, came to play and looks as though he may be out of his long shooting slump.

Anyone else notice the hustle under the boards by the Zips - Guards, Forwards and anybody was fighting hard underneath -- Thats what it going to take for us in the Tourney. Gotta rebound.

One last thing, I think this really hurts for the NIT without a real good showing in the Tourney. Buffalo - 6k of fans, excitment building -- really made a nice statement to the NIT selection committee should they not win the MAC tourney.

I think we're all a little disappointed with today's performance. The team looked tired and maybe a little beat up.. they've run a gauntlet over the last few weeks and teams know they can't out effort us so they are trying to out-physical us.

I think it got to them and we laid an egg today.

That said. KZ, a little over sensitive??

MAC refs are terrible. In today's games, I noticed the refs sucked too... both ways...

Miami vs Marshall was a brawl and at times Zips vs Bulls was rough too...

It's about time the MAC quit paying low dollar for refs... you get what you pay for....

What really gets me is that these morons are going to get somebody hurt with their non-calls.

MAC Basketball has been looking more and more like football every year.

EMU on Monday... GO ZIPS!!!

Isn't all officiating subjective. Pass interference, holding, roughing the QB, etc. are all normal calls in a football game that are completely subjective. How about boxing? Strike zone size?

Maybe your dad just doesn't like basketball as a sport, which is fine, but certainly not because of the way the game is called.

I would say my dad uses the word subjective more in the sense that -- there is absolutely no consistency in basketball from one possesion to the next or one game to the next. The rule book is pretty definitive (I think) that this is not a contact sport, but sometimes there is more contact than basketball. I heard Jim Boeheim on PTI last week talk about he believes there is more contact allowed in the NCAA than in the NBA.

To the extent I agree with my dad - my biggest problem comes when a player like Futch stands in the middle straight up and down -- a player jumps into him and Futch gets called for a foul. This whether it is Akron or the Utah Jazz happens every game dozens of times and it makes not sense to me. Not to mention the walking with the ball, the carrying of the ball etc.

As I mentioned in a previous post -- when a person says he's never going to get that call he's a rookie or he's a freshman -- there is something inherently wrong there. NO, if it is a foul you shouldn't have to be a veteran or senior to get the call.

As far as comparing it to football or baseball -- baseball strike zones are just stupid. Football the penalties are often harder to see with 22 men on the field than 10 on the court. With being so close and so few players -- it might just make them that much more visible.

Got my tickets for tomorrow night - looking forward to a great game.

Go Zips!

Hey mods what is the chance we can get a smiley face with a stick for every MAC team so we can use the appropriate one week in and week out? :screwks:
