Can't State Ad in the Buchtelite

Recommended Posts

Well, I was in Robs cafe yesterday, and I figured I'd pick up a copy of the student newspaper. First, everything was the same as usual; complaining about the new stadium, high loan rates, praising Barack Obama as God(among a slew of liberal propaganda that most college kids eat up). Then I turn to the very back of the paper to check out the Classifieds(apts for rent, etc.)...and what do I see but a FULL half page advertisement for Can't STATE UNIVERSITY! Someone on the newspaper staff please tell me this is a joke? There's no way someone let this go through accidentally! WHAT A JOKE!If anyone plans on complaining to the paper, you can contact them here:e-mail: opinion@buchtelite.comwebsite: www.buchtelite.comPhone numbers(If you're feeling crazy):Editor in Chief-Dillon Deshong 330-972-6184Off campus ad reps-Jenna Christie 330-972-6642Monica Rizzo 330-972-6852David Hartong Ad Designer 330-972-7458-------------->This guy should be blamed, no?Perhaps I'm over reacting. But I pray there are some other angry zips fans out there.

loldoesn't that kinda make a joke out of Can't State anyway?I mean, if they are trying to reach higher and improve themselves by poaching UA students? If I was the buchtelite I'd take their money too.
he's got a point. I see it as more as flattery than a slap to the face. If Can't wants to give us money so they can try to pull some students from us, so be it. It's not like we're losing on this deal. As someone photoshopped in another thread... Instead of can't using their slogan "Excellence in Action", it really should be "Excellence in Akron"...

I read some of the paper but after getting angered like usual by all of the liberal propaganda, i put it down. So i didnt even see that. Funny thing is, 2 days ago i wrote an email to the beacon journal complaining about the slew of cant basketball ads on their pages.

or "Excellence from Akron" in the case of trying to recruit UA students

I don't know, I understand taking their hippie money, but something does irk me about the balls it takes to advertise in our paper.BTW: Buchtelite Liberal Bias? I tried to do something about that like 4 years ago when I complained and told them I'd write a conservative slant for them. I emailed a letter to the editor and I was told they wouldn't print it because it didn't seem like the facts were right. I had already forseen this, so I emailed back a typed up page that listed all my fact checking. Solid facts and websites: DoD, DoL, etc... and they told me "ok, we'll print it"... I waited two papers without seeing it, emailed back and was told that it wasn't going in because it didn't reflect the views of the paper.Basically admiting that they had some sort of agenda, an agenda that my piece didn't fit.The lib who made the call... Krista... Kristen... something like that was her name.Mike, do you remember this? I know you were there at the time. We talked about it at a bar or a game or something.

Until UA gets a journalism school, I will never expect a high quality student newspaper here. Sometimes they surprise me and have a good edition, but usually it comes off as the product of a couple of kids with a newspaper hobby.
I am probably saying something that will be considered ignorant by some, but I doubt you need to go to journalism school to be a good writer. That only takes talent. You go to journalism school to learn the ins and outs of the media business, to get indoctrinated into the establishment way of doing things, and to learn how to produce work that sells.Good writing is good writing.

PDT....that's classic!! And not surprising at all.So, what was it about your story that didn't "fit the views of the paper"? You mean, you don't support a spread-the-wealth socialistic economic philosophy? You believe that Americans should make the effort to improve themselves if they want to be successful, and not whine to the government to make their lives better? And....You don't believe that free health care should be a "right"?What's wrong with you man !!!!!!

It looks like most on here are conservatives... must be a correlation with being a Zips fan: make no excuses, fight for everything you get, so that you earn it, it isn't handed to you. That, and conservatives have high speed internet.

wow so i was always afraid to get too political on here. Besides it being off topic usually, i figured most people at Akron were just on average a little further Right than Can't staters. I guess that's not the case, most of you seem pretty informed and pissed off about the Buchelite's usual garbage. and that is why we are all Akron fans and understand why Can't State SUCKS.

Goodness what a bunch of grumpy old farts you all sound like. Are any of you surprised by college kids tending toward liberalism? You're kidding right? Don't worry guys, they've got the entire rest of their lives to become disillusioned, bitter, cynical and angry. Let them (and their paper) enjoy what will likely be the most free-thinking and open-minded days of their lives, and by the way you were once idealistic too. At least I hope you were.Live and let live Zippers!SeeTeeZip

well, like you will give the "liberals" time to evolve into conservatives, I will give you "conservatives" time to figure out that "conservative" doesn't mean what they claim it does.Don't count me in with you guys. I once bought into the "conservative" mythos, particularly in the mid-90s when they actually tried to get a balanced budget amendment passed.Personally, I think it's all talk. Most "conservative" talking-heads only pay lip service to the ideals of less intrusive government, and go right on to pandering to the big elephantLibertarians > Conservatives > Liberal socialists

Well sorry to hear you aren't on the same bus with us. But i guess i wouldnt say that being a conservative is the most important thing here, just not being a far left loon is good enough. As long as you dont believe the polar ice caps will melt by 2013, Obama is Jesus #2, and eating animals is murder than you are alright.Last time i checked Libertarians didn't believe in any of that.

Who's complaining about the new stadium?
Hm, I'd have to pull out a copy of the paper(its at my room and I'm in the library right now) but some guy wrote a big piece on it in the opinion page. Actually, now that I think about it, I could of sworn he said somewhere that he is a member of the football team at UA.

So let me get this straight... someone out there, who is a student and potentially a member of the football team, would RATHER stay at the run-down rubber bowl than build a new stadium that is actually something to be proud of? Wow... I guess this world really is going down the sh!tter...
