Bull_In_Exile
gonzaga's height killed us. we had to work twice as hard to get rebounds (and still got out-rebounded) and it left us gassed down the stretch. that being said, i'm proud as [heck] of our boys. we gave those guys a scare, and that's a [heck] of a first step in making some tournament noise. i have to give props to ohio brewing for hosting one [heck] of an event. good beer, good basketball, good times. go zipsand Great game, no shame in getting worn down by a deeper bigger team... you guys put the fear in them for 30 minutes! I was at Brew Co. and I had to get a ride home because of the great atmosphere that OBC puts on . I have found my favorite hangout for getting drinks!!! Great game by the Zips. I can't say I'm surprised by the result but I am very pleased with how we played!!!
WinZip
What an exciting game! I really couldn't ask for more. The first half made me wonder if I was dreaming, yet in the end when I woke up I knew we have lots good times ahead. Tough to see any loss, but I can imagine it will make us that much stronger. The team prolly doesn't feel finished either
xu9697
Nothing but proud of that performance. Looking to win with 15 minutes to go, still very much in it with 8 minutes to go. Dambrot is right= there are probably 3 pros on that team.If you are going to lose as a #13 seed, that was in many ways the best way to do it. Look good for A LONG TIME, then start to watch the better talent win knowing you gave it everything you could. In turn, keeping the game and the score respectable at the end.Great performance. Quickzips
Thought I would post a few more thoughts from the morning after the game.Daryl Roberts was HUGE for us. Yeah he scored 5 points in pretty much garbage time, but he did a lot of things through the course of the game to help us stay even w/ the Bulldogs. He's one of the more underrated guys on this team. People really only pay attention to him when he is shooting free throws, but he's a crafty player. Twice last night he pump faked a Gonzaga player in the air and drew the foul. Great moves. He's also developing a nice mid-range game. I look forward to seeing him back on the floor next year.I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I have to call out Mike Bardo again. Again last night there were 2 or 3 times where he drifted out to the 3 point line to try to trap a guard and left a Gonzaga big under the hoop wide open for an easy bucket. I mean their guy could have caught the ball, laid his head down on it, took a nap, woke up and still slammed it home Bardo was so far out of position. It has been this way all year with Mike and Zaga took advantage of it as well as anyone. I don't know if this is something KD is telling him to do or if it is Mike improvising, but it either has to stop or Bardo has to get his butt planted firmly on the bench. I will give him credit for going up strong and dunking the ball once, but just a minute before that he had to be bailed out with a foul call when he got good post position, but brought the ball down and gave the defenders time to rotate over. I hate to say it, but Bardo is a waste of a scholarship IMO.I am going to miss Nate Linhart. A lot. I haven't always liked him in his career. He plays about as ugly a brand of basketball as you will ever see. But he lays it all out on the floor. You can't look back and say, well if Nate would have given a little more effort here, or done a little better there we could have won. Last night was no different as he was a big part in giving us a chance to win that game. He's not really big, really strong, really fast or a really good jumper, but I will take 10 Nate Linhart's on my team any day of the week.Humpty's injury really hurt us. McNees wasn't on last night and with Humpty only able to play a few minutes I felt like our backcourt just got worn down in the end. If nothing else you need him out there for depth and it just wasn't there last night.I think the turning point in the game was when the McKnights both picked up their third fouls early in the 2nd half. Gonzaga didn't take advantage right away, but when those two got in foul trouble it killed our inside game. We actually outscored a much bigger Gonzaga team in the paint through the first half. But with KD having to be careful with Chris and Brett in the 2nd half our inside game went away and Gonzaga shut us down at the 3 point arc. For us to take that next step the brothers need to learn to avoid fouls more often.Overall, a great effort for the Zips. No shame in taking a top 10 team in the nation toe to toe for thirty minutes. There are still some things to work on, but we've got some time to work on them. This team should make some noise in the big dance over the next couple years. doublezip
The atmosphere at the OBC was great! Loved seeing a bar full of people cheering on the Zips!! As far as the game, the Zips gave it all they had. They played their rear ends off and just seemed to have a bad 5 minute stretch that you can't have against a team of Gonzaga's caliber. Our guards, while smaller, looked as quick or quicker than their guards. I think a healthy Humpty could have done some damage. It also hurt bad that both McNees and Brett were off (I think they were 1-17 combined). Nevertheless, it was a good showing and something we can build on in the future. I don't think it will be another 23 year wait...Go Zips, here's to dancing again in 2010!!

I wish he would play the 1 spot more often but I guess he feels more comfortable as a 2. He has got a great touch on the ball and is pretty much the most consistent one on the team. Not to mention the fact that he is a briliant kid and a great guy to talk to.

RootforRoo44
One more thing to add about last night: Did anyone else enjoy actually having decent officiating?I know it wasn't perfect but it was a hell of a lot better than the garbage we are used to and i think the performance ratings they are doing on the refs really might work in the MAC. Maybe even a performance based bonus setup for MAC officials.
zippyrifle32
from my understanding, one of the refs was a mac ref. tough crowd though. toward the end everyone was cheering for gonzaga... except our few rows of akron fans.
bandzip
Just got back from my free trip to Portland. A few things to note/questions to answer before I go to bed.1. Gonzagas fans were pretty pathetic. They weren't cheering at all until half way through the second half or when one of their guys made a dunk. The guys sitting behind us (the band) were swearing at us the entire game for cheering. Two of their fans walked by and knocked over all the music stands in the front row on purpose. I'm sure there were some respectable fans there but from our spot we didn't see any. I'd like to add that 95% of the cheering you heard during the game came from the band, we decided to make up for the fact that there were no Rowdies there and cheered on every single possession. It was really getting to Gonzagas players too, the 30 kids in the band were outcheering the couple of thousand Gonzaga fans.2. I was sitting in the lobby Wednesday evening when someone asked Humpty about his ankle. He said he re-twisted it on Wednesday morning. I know one of the charter buses took a group to hike around a waterfall Wednesday morning, but I'm not sure if the team went or not so that could be when it happened.3. One of the refs was a MAC ref. We recognized him from one of the games earlier in the season where we were heckling him about a bad call and during a time out he came back and tried to explain it to us. He turned and smiled when he saw us walk in. There were a couple of calls against Gonzaga that I didn't really agree with, but I didn't have the best view of them from behind the basket. It was a great place to sit and see Bardo's dunk though. 4. Our guards had no chance the entire game. They were getting shots blocked left and right during the first half. The Zips played an amazing game and I was proud of them when the game was over. Thanks for a great season and I'm REALLY looking forward to next year! MDZip
Just got in the door from Portland. Tough trip going 6,000 miles in two days but well worth it. What an incredible experience. Zips fans were not many but were very into the game and very vocal. Zags fans were kind of sitting in stunned silence until they made their run and then it felt like it was a home game for them. It was quite fun walking around at halftime with the Zips leading. I believe the Zips have a chance to make it next year and hopefully it wil be a little closer so more people can enjoy the experience. As far as the game goes, Gonzaga is athletic as heck and very tall and the Zips did a great job holding them down and playing the game at our pace. Once it became a running game, that was pretty much it. There were a lot of great drives, hustle and tenacity which will bode well for next season.I think folks are a little hard on Bardo. His defense actually did cause Gonzaga to alter some shots and he did an acceptable job. I think a little confidence for him would go a long way. That's why I loved the dunk. Humpty was incredibly quick for the limited amount of time he got to play. He was the equal in quickness to anyone on the floor. Steve did a good job (other than shooting) in taking care of the ball and distributing it, but Humpty just adds another dimension when he's in. Great to be there celebrating with other Zips fans. I hope we get to do it again next year.

The majority of them are just bandwagon fans, just look around ohio at all of the people that say love Ohio State, they are the same kind of fan. That's why it's great to be a Zips fan, a fan that actually roots for the home team and knows how to be a fan the right way. Gonzaga really did not impress me in any way in terms of fans or as a team. They may beat WKU but they just dont have any heart as a team and you could see it. I think what someone said about them using their floor time the day before for dunking and fooling around summed up the kind of team they are. The Zips on the other hand are a team that you should be truly proud to root for!(btw, to whoever the Akron fan who called Gonzaga fans "pussies": THANK YOU, i'm glad someone could represent the all out, all for your team attitude that college basketball is about. It's war out there even for the fans. The whining about respectability and the want by many Akron fans to have a high school atmosphere at college games is annoying. This is COLLEGE BASKETBALL. Drinking, profanities, wild comments, raucious cheering, and crazy antics are what make the game so fun, don't tone it down and turn it into CYO.) MDZip
The Gonzaga fans were great folks, they made the game fun too. Lots of good natured trash talking, they showed the Zips respect and they came out and supported their team - it doesn't matter whether they attended the school or not. If all you ever have are alumni supporting your team, you won't have that big of a following, especially at a school like Gonzaga (or Akron). They captured the hearts of the fans in Washington, we keep talking talking about doing the same for Joe Akron.College basketball (and most sports) are a great deal of fun, but it's far, far from life and death. We're all in this together and most people recognize that. It's not even close to an us vs. them mentality, it's living in the moment. I'd take Josh Heytvelt (and just about any of the Gonzaga palyers) on our team any time, just because they chose a different school doesn't make someone the devil incarnate. Get some perspective, work with some folks who have been in a real war and that might just change some of the rhetoric.</more experienced fan rant over>
BirdZip
I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I have to call out Mike Bardo again. I hate to say it, but Bardo is a waste of a scholarship IMO.He's taught to do that. His job on the screen is to get in front of the guy with the ball and stop his progress so that his defender can catch back up. When his man rolls, it is the rest of the team's responsibility to help him until; he gets back. Mike's a little slower on his feet so he has a more difficult time cutting the guy off, but that's his job in this defense on that screen. If you watch, you'll see others do it all the time on that screen near the top of the key.

You can say all you want about help defense, it is still Mike's job to roll off of that screen and get back into the post. He doesn't do it. Doesn't even look like he tries to do it.
