I know the Women's basketball team played in the NIT one year but damned if I can find anything about that in the media guide or on their website.If you know of any championships or at-large tournament selections for a sport, list them here, and I'll put them on the master list.I didn't bother to figure out individual championships yet. skip-zip Posted June 15, 2009 Report Share Posted June 15, 2009 One that immediately stood out for me is the mention of an NCAA tourney appearance in softball in 84 and 85We were actually NATIONAL RUNNER-UP both of those years, losing in the national title game. I was in school at the time. It was a pretty cool feat back then to see Akron nearly winning a team national championship. I'm pretty sure the baseball team won the 1996 MAC tournament. The only thing I could find to partially back this up is a 2007 Zip baseball media guide (see full link below). It shows P-OF Dave Yoder as being the MAC tourney MVP in 1996, so I'm pretty sure that was the year. Plus, Zips are all over the all-tourney team for that same year. While you're right, you may be missing a few older championships, but even if its reasonably accurate list, the rate of championships over the last few years has been incredible. And while it looks like you broke it down by primarily by calendar year instead of school year, if you look at it strictly by school year, I think this is the greatest year in athletics in school history. With the mens soccer team with a sweet sixteen appearance (and we all know it should have been better), a basketball NCCA appearance and MAC championship and two individual NCAA championships, this year has got to top the list. Maybe tonight I'll get around to figuring out the individual sports championships, assuming there is much of a record of them.Notice that the number of championships increasing corresponds to about the time Akron joined the MAC. I know that Rifle has won tons of individual and team conference titles, but I can't find a record of them. I would love to see the Rifle team's historical accomplishments recognized. One of the reasons I'm trying to do this is to get all the conference championships from every Akron sport in one place. Another is to see if I can't get the athletic department to do this for me, I mean have a complete list of records for all sports. It's still a work in progress.
