Student Tickets

Got to Akron early to get my student ticket before they had any chance of running out. After the cluster**** of parking on campus and wasting 15 minutes finding somewhere to park, I made the walk over to the JAR. I was pleasantly surprised to see a line to the ticket office for people getting tickets.Students had their own table to go to... and when I went to get my ticket, I was given this (sorry for the crappy iphone pic):01cf9c7f.jpg[begin Rant]I was then given the instructions that I was to wear this until the game on the 12th. This is a NON-REMOVABLE wristband. I have to wear this for 2 weeks through countless showers, work, and everyday use. To get into the game on the 12th, I must have this wristband on me along with my Zip Card.Honestly, who thought this was a good idea? I know... beggars can't be choosers if we want to get 5000 students to be at each game, but this was an idea only someone at Akron could have come up with. I plan on looking into a way for me to be able to take it off and put it back on for the game. Its probably going to involve a fine-toothed saw and some epoxy glue... but until then...Hopefully the smart folks over in the Athletic Department catch wind of this and come up with a better solution for the Indiana game. I don't want to have to wear 2 wristbands for a week for 2 different games. [/rant]

Yep. I'm stuck wearing it for the next two weeks. :-/It's a great advertising tool, but it was surprising that it is non-removable. Still, I'm glad that there was a line for these, along with a line for GA tix. I hope that as much as it annoys us to have to wear these, we'll be glad we got them early because it sold out. I hope, anyway.

got mine as well. A bit disappointed about the fact that I'm stuck with it for 12 days but what can you do? I hope this is a one-time thing though.I am also positive all 5K will be gone. This stadium is gonna be packed and I love it!
Didn't I hear that they were doing this for both this game and Can't? I could be wrong.

From the beginning, students were going to have to get tickets ahead of time for the Can't and Indiana games. They recently realized how high the demand was going to be for the MS game, thus this blunder. I would have to imagine they will have actual tickets for the Cant and Indiana games. I think these were only given out because they probably did not have enough time to get student tickets printed.

All right then, the wrist band thing is good advertising, but it's still borderline lame. But lets turn it into a positive. I am willing to suggest and participate in a new Tradition: if you are wearing that wristband on gameday it entitles the prisoner/wearer to some free food from any participating Tailgating fans.

I was quite annoyed as well. I can't wear this stupid band at work. I cut it off. If they have problems, there will be a scene. This is a very stupid idea. There are far better ways to get students to be "free advertising."Oh, and no, I told them I can't wear the band, and they said either wear it or don't get one.EDIT: and they don't even check your zip card. Just make sure you have it. If they are so worried about having limited student tickets, why don't they keep track. Anybody with a card can get this band, student or not.

Shoot..when I was in college, I wore the same jeans for 12 days, morning, afternoon and night!Anyway, if this is such a problem, you should all band together and overthrow the establishment!!!
thats a bit excessive... hahaIve actually been toying with mine for a little while... I think with some patience and some determination, you can pop it off with a paper clip.**UPDATE**I got mine off, rather successfully, I may add.I used a thumb tack and went around punching in the prongs on the pin part of the snap for a while. After that I used a pocket knife (risky, but it was all I had at my disposal) and started prying on the snap. You could probably use a small flat-head screwdriver if you wanna be safer. After a little bit of work, it fell right off and you can't tell that I took the thing off.

I'm quite disturbed by this. I'm a student, but I work in a professional office where dress code is taken rather seriously. Shirts and ties and all that kind of stuff. Having a blue wrist band on for the next two weeks isn't going to come off too well for them. Whoever thought up this idea really ought to be fired on the spot. There are a lot better ways to advertise and ensure that student tickets are getting to students than to force them to wear an arm band for two weeks.

Shirts and ties? So then they are ok with short sleeve? No watches? Really?See because most places that go shirt and tie require true dress shirts (ie not short sleeve). That wristband is easily going to hide under any long sleeve dress shirt.

Oh come on fellas, enough with the bitching. I work in a professional work setting too, like most of the posters on the board. How many guys do I know who have worn yellow Lance Livestrong bracelets, with suits, for years now? Many. Does anybody hassle them to take them off? Nope. You may be annoyed that you need to wear the bracelet, but I see it as one little piece of this whole shebang going to a next level. I mean, if it's so bad to wear the bracelet, take it off and pay for a ticket like the rest of us did. This ain't the lame-O Rubber Bowl anymore guys. You wearing those bracelets will generate discussion, which will hopefully get a few more asses in the seats, which will help to build fan base, etc., etc. Just do it.GO ZIPS!STZ

Good for you. As stupid as it sounds, I'm not even allowed to where those Lance bracelets either. This is just a poor idea. I think the main reason these were made non-removable is not because they want the free advertising (if so, I would have expected something better than "I'll be there" tag) but rather to keep students from taking more than one. They kept no record of which students were taking bands, you just had to show have a zip-card. I think these bands are going to be a big turn off for students that want in, rather than a positive. I told many students today about tickets going on sale, and they all thought it was stupid that you couldn't take off the band (even when I was trying to put a good spin on it. Even when I can't stand the U it seems I can't help but try to sell it) A few even said they would much rather wait and risk not getting into the game. In the long run, I doubt it's really going to affect student ticket sales, but the negative impression is there.

It may be a way to "filter" the students that get in. Many of the hardcore fans were there early, and unfortunately they got surprised with these wrist bands. After the word spreads, though, it ensures that only the students who really want to go will get in, since the rest will wait and risk not getting in. It's a way of getting the 5,000 biggest Zips student-fans into the game, instead of having the more casual student section who won't cheer as much or who are only there to be at the opener. How's that for some spin? :P

Being the first day of sales, I'm not sure I'd believe that spin. Most that I saw there were the more interested fan anyway. Also, the lady handing out bands mentioned 7,000, not 5k. I have no idea if this is true, but that's what the lady said.

If this was a bracelet like the Lance Armstrong "Livestrong" things, I wouldn't have an issue because those things are both 1) comfortable, and 2) removable, of which these wristbands are neither. They literally feel like the same thing you get at your local fair save for the plastic "non-removable" (until i proved otherwise) clip. At a time when student attendance is in the hundreds instead of the thousands at football games, you'd expect the athletic department to do everything possible to make sure any student who wants to be there can without much hassle. Why they are so concerned about students giving these things out to others is beyond me. To be honest... this wouldnt have been a big issue if this was a day or so before the game... not 12 days out. Hell... if they would have just given it to me and let me put it on for the game, that would been much more suffecient. However, I guess being overly paranoid about students giving out "tickets" is too big of an issue.

You also have to look at it from the U's perspective: They don't want 5,000 students at the game. If you just built a brand new stadium, would you want to give away 5,000 free tickets, or charge full price for them?
