New Law Building

Recommended Posts

Being the big digger that I am I stumbled on this blog.As you can see it's from March 09. So that got me curious and I did some more research.Which helped me discover this powerpoint and this documentIn brief, the University will be building the new law building on the site of the current Cunningham building (connecting the whole thing to CBA), current budget 23.6 million. As best I can tell the powerpoint was part of the feasability study that led them to decide to go with a brand new building. It's very likely that an announcement will be made in the near future as deadline for the construction manager application is 10/27/09.This is kind of exciting as once this is completed it frees up the land that the current law building sits on for the new School of Nursing. My understanding is that the Law School itself has raised quite a bit of the 23.6 million, but I can't find anything on that (so no big bond rating hit for the school). The American Bar Association is requiring the new building so that the Law School can maintain it's accredidation. Also it would appear from some of the other things I saw that Wolf Ledges may go the way of Union and Carrol and become a Pedestrian Mall.

Being a law student, the buzz on this one has been going around pretty much since Dean Belsky arrived a year and a half ago. At this point I would say it is more likely than not to come through, but as was stated, the majority of this will be done by private donations and those can sometimes be fickle animals. It really is needed though. The current law school building is one of the biggest things holding the law school back. It isn't set up well at all. Professors offices are spread out all over the place, the library is hidden back in a corner, the heating and air conditioning system is absolutely terrible and the whole thing looks rather dead and dreary. If I'm remembering right from what I have heard the plan is to eventually close the portion of Wolfs Ledges that runs between the Law School and the Buckingham (I think this is what you called the Cunningham building) building and the new law school building will be built in this area. I'm not certain, but I think the plan is to leave the old law school standing and have it converted into undergraduate classrooms. Don't quote me on that though. These are just the whispers I hear around the halls. My guess is that action on this is still a few years away, but I can tell you it is definitly a big priority for Dean Belsky.

It's going to start a chain-reaction of moving colleges on campus. The nursing school moves to where the old law school is (a much needed upgrade), which allows someone else to occupy or renovate Mary-Gladwin hall. At the exact same time, the college of education will be being built on the site of Memorial Hall, once the transfer to the stadium is complete, which allows a renovation of Zook Hall to match the one that happened to Leigh.

Yeah, but doesn't it concern anyone that it may mean we're going to be cranking out more lawyers? ;)
We need more lawyers to sue the doctors to drive up health care costs so that only the trial lawyers can afford it...it's the American way !At any rate, it looks like the International Business building plan on the Buckingham site is permanently scrapped..
