Never heard of ESPN writer Adam Rittenberg but here is something he had to say about Luke Fickell

3. Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell -- A head coach in the near future, Fickell has helped Ohio State consistently bring in top 5 recruiting classes. He lured top defensive prospects Corey Brown and Dorian Bell in the 2009 class and has landed several current defensive starters, including safety Kurt Coleman and defensive end Thaddeus Gibson. Fickell's youth and energy helps him stand out on a staff of good recruiters.

Buzz: Few coaches can say they signed a five-star recruit and even fewer can say they signed two, but Fickell fits in that rare category. Fickell, who is in his seventh season at his alma mater, scored five-star defensive back Corey Brown and five-star linebacker Dorian Bell. He also helped in-state and reached out to Kentucky to pull in four-star linebacker Jordan Whiting. He's become one of the most consistent and effective recruiters in the Big Ten, and made his mark nationally once again this year.

So he's a good recruiter, but can he coach at all?

Meh... i dunno. OSU has had a good defense. I am looking for things to be excited about. New season started this past Sat.

Since his name is being thrown around, I thought I'd see what I could find out about Luke Fickell. He has spent his whole life in Columbus - high school and OSU - except for 1990 and 1991 when he was a coach at Akron under Lee Owens. He has moved steadily up the coaching ranks at OSU and is now co-defensive co-ordinator. He could have left OSU for ND for more money, but he loves his situtation in Columbus. Staying close to family, who are all located in the Columbus area, is important to him. He aspires to be a head coach and he has been mentioned as a possible sucessor to Tressel someday. If he would be interested, he'd be a top-of-the-list candidate. On an unrelated note, I'm watching the start of the Cleveland-Cinci game and the Browns' brown pants are just plain ugly.
