Akron: FootballScoop.com has confirmed there is no truth to the speculations that Wayne State head coach Paul Winters is resigning today to become the head coach at Akron.
There was a rumor that Winters already resigned to come here? Anybody know where they're getting this from?We don't even have a short list yet.

French's list:1. Mark Stoops - Still a possibility. YSU fans are jumping the gun, according to the coaching scoop sites.2. Pat Narducci - Very unlikely. If it is a possibility, MSU fans don't have a clue about it.3. Paul Winters - Lots of rumors swirling right now.4. Paul Chryst - possibility of coming to Akron summarily dismissed by Badgers fans, but it came off as them just being self-important BCS jackoffs.5. Luke Fickell - Still a possibility. Some questions from OSU fans as to whether he can actually coach. One guy even said he hopes Fickell comes here and ruins our program just so the "successor to Tressel" stuff will stop.6. Terry Allen - I don't see any substance to this.

Please anyone but Paul Winters, he does not have the resume we deserve. (I'm sure in a couple years he will, but he's already 50) I'm personally tired of getting High school coaches (Owens) and non-successful (no championships) coaches. (Brookhart, Faust)Wow we've only had 3 coaches since we've been D-1?

i would love to see winters get the job.i have no doubt we would score points, and would be an improved team on offense.he would have success would not be looking for the next job.if nothing else i love to see him as our o.c., but i know head coaches usually bring thier own guys.some of the other guys have never been a head coach.

Wow, we've only had one bowl appearance since we've been D1?
Well the point being that we have been a D1 team for 22 years and have only hd 3 coaches (7 year average) for a team with only 1 bowl appearance that is an unusually long amount of time. That suggests that we have historically had low expectations to extend a coaches contract.

Looks like CMU's coach Butch Jones is headed to Marshall -- at least those are the rumors swirling so we're now competing with another MAC team for a coach.Hopefully TW jump start will help him.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Chips run HARD after Chuck Martin :mad_flame: One thing that hurts Martin in all of these openings is his success. If GVS wins D2, then Akron, CMU, etc will have to WAIT until then to officially hire him. With UA trying to hold the recruiting class together, this might sway TW away from him (if he hasn't already selected his guy, of course).Edit: So SeeTee and probably some others want to see an IMPACT hire. How about this scenario. What if UA was to decisively and transparently OUTBID CMU for Chuck Martin? I think that would send a strong message to the rest of the MAC that UA is dead serious about its intentions.

Jumping the gun? What coaching candidate would be negotiating the salary amount for his assistant coaches? I have heard from numerous people that it is Stoops' job for the taking. Although it will cost YSU a significant amount of money, the expectations here are a LOT higher in Youngstown than in Akron. As bad as we were this year, we still had a winning season at 6-5. Although our coach was 60-44 in his 9 years here, that was not good enough. Youngstown wants a winner and they will pay what it takes to get one.

I'm a Mooney grad myself who went to Akron for grad school. My wife is also a Mooney grad who went to YSU for her B.A. and Masters. All the Mooney alum want Stoops at YSU. No one is talking about him going to Akron, no one wants him to go anywhere else but Akron. I think some Y-town people will step up and write a check if it comes down to Mark going to YSU or Akron. Just a thought from someone in the Mooney mix.

Not just the "core" Youngstown State fans. It's the Mooney YSU Alum. Mooney does not have the representation at Youngstown State that other school in the Mahoning Valley have had. I.E. Warren, Boardman and Austintown. They feel out of the loop when it comes to YSU sports in general.

The more I think about it, the more I think that Fickell is a good candidate.
Well every talking head in the country has said "He's going to be a head coach, and he has the ability to recruit."Every "name" on that defense over the last 3 seasons, was recruited by Fickel. (and yes it's easier to recruit for OSU than Akron, but he's beating out, Nebraska's, USC's, and Texas's for some of these kids.) Surely he can beat out MAC schools and low tier Big East schools for the players we compete for.

+1That would make a big splash .. I'm willing to go BCS Coordinator again if it's a guy whose team is consistently in the top 10 and playing in BCS Bowls every season.Get us a winner Tom. B) B) B) B) Go Zips!!
