It is the second year in a row a UA player has been named Player of the Year by the publication and the third time a sophomore has won the award, which was first handed out in 1984. Former Zips standout Steve Zakuani won the 2008 Player of the Year award as a sophomore. The only other sophomore to win the honor was Virginia's Claudio Reyna, who won the first of back-to-back awards in 1992. Bunbury, also earned the 2009 Mid-American Conference and Goal.com Player of the Year awards. Bunbury, a native of Prior Lake, Minn., led all Division I players with 17 goals in 2009 and helped the Zips (23-1-1) to a national runnerup finish in the NCAA Tournament. He had five goals that were game-winners and four of his five assists led to game-winning goals. He has at least one goal or one assist in 16 of 25 games and scored multiple goals in four games. From late September to early November, he scored 14 goals in a 12-game span, including four game-winners. Bunbury compiled a team-high 39 points and started every game for UA, which was ranked No. 1 in the country by all five national polls for the final nine weeks of the season. He scored six goals as a freshman. Bunbury is one of three finalists this year for the Hermann Trophy, college soccer's version of football's Heisman Trophy. The winner will be announced on Jan. 8 at the Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, Mo. jem101
I was curious how much money there is to be made in the MLS and the results shocked me. A Reuters story reported, "Stuart Holden, a 24-year-old U.S international and one of the top midfielders in MLS this season with Houston, earns a salary of under $35,000 from the league while Salt Lake’s top scorer Robbie Findley with 18 goals in 27 regular season games and the equaliser in Sunday’s final, this year earned just $72,000." And of course the rookies are making even less. Why would you forgo a free college education for a middle class salary at best. Am I missing something? Is there a lot of money in endorsements? zip37
Gee, I hope he signs w/SEA, that would be another reason to root for a left cioast team, but my guess is that someone else will draft him.

jhbengals07
BLAST! I was hoping that he would stay one more year and try to get this thing done. Oh well, we'll miss ya Teal, good luck in the MLS. Hope he gets the Hermann too, if not the NCAA is officially crap. Its our defense that will carry us though, good thing that is still young.According to the "Soccer Insider" column by Steven Goff in today's online Washington Post, Teal has decided to skip college and head to the MLS next year.Goff's article is actually under the WP sports blogs, not the columns. Its official. So lobbying now is pointless. The link below is for last year's voting process (No "Wednesday, Nov 30th" 2009), but the timing is similar every year.Hermann voting
