infofan Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Basically our game against BG on saturday is meaningless in terms of seeding in MAC. if Can't State enters Rhodes Arena with a one-game lead over Akron, ( should we lose to BG),a Zips win still would clinch the MAC regular season championship for Akron. Why? If Akron wins that game, both teams will finish at 12-4. The first tiebreaker (head-to-head) will be a wash. Then you go down the seeds to find a team that Akron fared better against, or vice versa. The teams both beat Ball State and both split versus Buffalo. So it will come to Miami, a team that Akron swept and Can't State split. So the Zips would win the tiebreaker. It is almost certain that March 5 will determine which team is guaranteed a postseason appearance in the NIT (which goes to a regular season conference champion that doesn't go to the NCAA Tournament). That being said- hell yes the game saturday matters to us. we better not lay an "Indianapolis colts" on zip fans saturday in our last game ever at Anderson arena. Quote
MDZip Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 In my best Lee Corso voice - "Not so fast my friend", there is a scenario under which we could beat Can't and still not get the #1 seed if we lose to BGSU. Without going into too much detail on tied teams, should EMU finish ahead of the RedHawks in the standings (or even tied with them because that gets into the complicated tied-teams scenarios, though it is to our advantage that Miami beat EMU), we would lose out on the #1 seed. EMU is only one game back of Miami, so its not a stretch. Our ace in the hole team is Miami, Can'ts is EMU. Both of us would have losses to Buffalo and BGSU so that is a wash. I was disappointed to see Miami lose on a last second shot, a win would have been far better for us. So there is still definitely something to play for against BGSU. Quote
