Dr Z
The University of Akron Department of Athletics has extended its partnership with Fox Sports Radio 1350 WARF-AM in Akron/Canton and has come to terms on a new agreement that will expand its football radio coverage to the Cleveland and Youngstown/Warren markets, Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill announced on Thursday. These agreements will significantly increase UA's presence in the Northeast Ohio region as the new coverage area for UA football broadcasts will encompass 88,000 UA alumni. In addition to being heard on Clear Channel Communications' 1350 AM, Zips football games will also be broadcast live on News Talk 1420 WHK in Cleveland and 1440 WHKZ The Word in Warren this fall thanks to a new partnership with Salem Communications. Spin
Awesome!!!! Working on the road in C-town, it's not always easy to get 1350. And these young kids, don't get AM radio. The first hint of static and they're throwing a holy fit. Very nice...

The first hint of static and they're throwing a holy fit. If you get an HD (Hybrid-Digital, not High Definition) radio, it completely eliminates any static or distortion in the AM spectrum. It's like being in the studio. But this is excellent news as far as expanding our coverage to the north and east.
Dr Z
I've mentioned this many times on ZN (not for a while). I've been using Pocket Tunes for my iphone for two years and could not recommend it more. I paid $4.99 for the app. I just checked the iTunes store and it now sells for $6.99. They have a sports addition for $1.99, but I suggest the full version. You are able to listen to XM or Sirius also with it if you have a subscription. I can't verify how it works on any other device though. Maybe another member can. Edit: I just thought of one thing, there is a delay, so if you want to watch the Zips and listen, not good. At least that's how it was last year.

ZachTheZip
Did the contract with WRQK 106.9 expire or get cancelled? Getting coverage in Canton is still important, and with the additions of these two stations it would cover the vast majority of the population centers in NE Ohio. If we can't get on 106.9, we should try some other station that covers that area.
Zipsrifle
I actually sent a request through "ask the AD" for this so I am glad to see this happen. I'm getting in my car now to see if I can get 1420..... I hope I can! Good job!
Spin
Any way to get Zips games on phones? Something like I heart radio? Yes. What phone? I have a BB at the moment, but getting a new one next month. I hope to find something better. I know I can get I heart radio, if my BB was working right, just didn't know if the Zips were on a station that is on that service.
skip-zip
I'm sure this will be helpful to those of us fans who might be out of the Akron area during a game. But, I see this picking up maybe about 8 new listeners...tops.

Expanded radio coverage never adds new listeners; only a winning team and then a marketing blitz heavily focused on the fact that the team is winning can do that. The purpose of this is to let alumni who live outside 1350's range be able to listen to the broadcast.

What's 1350's "range"? 1 mile? 106.9 was finally a chance to really pick up a Zips game that actually somewhat came in anywhere outside of downtown/campus in Akron. I don't know what type of antenna you have, but in my car I lose 1350 shortly outside the Akron city limits! I did an informal test yesterday to see how far the 1420 signal goes. I consider yesterday to be a good radio day based upon the reception of the Detroit radio stations I was getting. On the best days, I get 88.7 out of Detroit in Elyria. Yesterday I had 88.7 in Vermillion when normally, it's spotty in Sandusky. Anyway, I had little trouble getting 1420 into Sandusky yesterday. I bet simply adding this station will triple or even quadruple the number of people in the coverage area. I'm not saying it will quadruple the number of listeners. I consider it ridiculous that when UofA is targeting the Cleveland metropolitan area as it's fan base, to not have that covered by radio. This was an absolutely necessary addition and I'm glad to see it happen. TW seems to be getting some points here lately with the soccer stadium and now this. Keep up the good work! eguins
If any of those stations are on Clear Channel then chances are you can find them on the I-Heart-Radio App for Iphone and I presume for Droid. I know you can hear YSU on the that app since we are on Clear Channel in Youngstown. Check into it.
ZachTheZip
1350 WARF is owned by Clear Channel, and should be available on I Heart Radio. 1440 WHKZ and 1420 WHK are owned by Salem Communications, however.
GoZips
I think it is just dandy that the Zips are adding coverage in a region where 1350 can be heard. What I would like is a radio station that covers Medina County and the western Cleveland area. Neither of those stations penetrate this area at night. And, those of us that know, once you pass over Ohio route 21 when heading west on I-76 WARF is non-existent. Must be a whole passle of Zips fans in Farrell, PA. Guess I'll just have to start following Ashland.
