Tough win by the Zips. Clearly a penalty that led to the PK. I think it was Nagbe who beat the keeper to the ball at the top of the box. Once he got there he dribbled around the keeper and once the GK realized he was beat, he reached out his arm and tripped him up. The BTN stream was really good. Unfortunately, the camera missed PSU's goal, so I couldn't see if it was offside or not. That's what you'll have with students running the show though.

I just got back from State College.

The PSU goal was offsides by a good three yards. Probably more. I was right there, it happened right in front of me. Everybody but the attacker had stopped for a second because they were anticipating the obvious call, but it was never made and they took advantage of that moment.

Yes, our jerseys were stolen. So were some Zips scarfs that were swiped directly from the Zips fans and parents.

The officiating was wildly inconsistent at best. I'll just leave it at that. Big Ten officiating needs to get a serious look by the NCAA.

Their whole stadium smelled of horse crap and burnt mushrooms.

At the end, doing "I believe" with our players and their parents made it all worth it. Especially after listening to the PSU version of it (I believe that Akron sucks) for about three hours including pre-game and half-time and every point during the game.

I ran across this article this morning by a Penn State student/fan praising the stealing of the jerseys. Stay classy Penn State.

On the topic of blaming the refs and other players for dirty play, it really is starting to get old. Let's be like the players and rise above it all. We're 10-0-1 against the toughest schedule in the country with or without the refs. Go Zips!

Thanks. Not that I read a lot of soccer stories, but that one was well done. Entertaining, and with (too small) photos. What will become of the student that stole the jerseys? I wonder because it determines if he is a hero, or an idiot. Sounds like any Akron fan that made the trip got their moneys worth.

I know people complain about refs on this board a lot, but complaining about the penn state goal being offsides is pretty appropriate. Even the player who scored the goal said that he thought he was offsides!

“Honestly, I thought I was offsides, but (the linesman) didn’t put his flag up,” Hertzog said. “So I just took it off my chest and went around the keeper. It was an open net so I put it there.”

That's why you don't stop playing till the whistle is blown... I'm sure Porter will have something to say about that.

Well, I did have the opportunity to escape work this a.m. (Thursday), in order to watch about the final 40 minutes of this match. Penn State probably played the best game of each player's career. :D Akron was tuned in about 90% of the time. That other 10% can kill ya. That ball almost got in the corner of the Akron goal with 10 seconds left in reg time. The Akron midfield did give up altogether too many balls to Nittany Lion players. Apparently, Ampai is still out of action, eh? When does he return? Perry Kitchen is better at developing play offensively than at holding the ball in the center. Thought Nanchoff looked really good -- though that PK was a bit close for my taste.

Close games develop character. We should have enough now to blow out our upcoming opponents.:NCAAC:

I watched about the same amount as you, Z.I.P. I agree the focus wasn't quite 100% for the Zips, and several Hertzog moments could have wound up as goals. But the Zips had even more chances in crunch time. Ampai was out there, but he wasn't on the ball nearly as much as usual. I expect him to breakout tomorrow night against U@B.

LATE REVIEW

Sorry, been on the road since the game, but i did attend so i'll add some insight.

Quotes of the Game!

Zip fan during warm ups - "Wow, the refs look really old" :(

Substitution ref to Porter - "Coach please...... were on TV"

Jersey's.... Well played PSU, after the game it made me laugh, and this is college soccer! I saw some jerseys being thrown back after the match, so i am hoping those were all of the "stolen" ones. Definite props to the students though! they knew their smack :D . They had no problem mocking Zippy by name, and knew which Jerseys to steal

First goal.... Oh yeah, Hertzog was offsides, but you play to the whistle!

Akron's response..... that goal really po'ed the zips who promptly scored with some great footwork and took the opportunity to remind the student section to shut it :D I don't think many teams that come into PennSt have the swagger or talent to do that and back it up. This really riled the students, and the zips fed off that energy B)

The rest of regulation.... After Hertzogs goal Valentin took a little revenge in the form of a clip in front of the student section and they never let him forget it. From yelling, jeering and the classic left right left right... left..... right... you knew when he was about to handle the ball! Hertzog was also a defensive BEAST! He has incredible endurance and challenged every backfield possession! He alone, kept PennSt in the game for most of the match by disrupting our rhythm and allowing the defense to set up! While we dominated possession time, the lions did a great job of forcing corner kicks... too many for my blood and we're lucky they didn't score off one!

Officiating.... Yes it was horrible. There was another PennSt offsides where even the player with ball stopped becasue he was soooooo offsides, except the line judge was not paying attention and somewhere around midfield. But if he didn't see it, there's nothing you can do. A penalty is either called or it isn't, debate is left up to the fans! Later a ball in front of the zips bench was 2-3 YARDS out of bounds and no call... That should be on film since it was only ten yards from the lone on field camera!!! I've played soccer, and i know part of the game is what the refs don't see. That said, at times this match looked like 80's WWf wrestling with players distracting ref's and judges while propper fouls were committed. Who says soccer is boring :D

PK.... Awesome, totally awesome... PSU fans knew they were screwed and voiced their displeasure  The officiating led to their discontent as well, but it was a beyond obious call. I think everyone at the game knew that was probably the game right then and there! The midfield scape was players letting off steam after a very physical match... Afterwards there was plenty of sportmanship and well wishes... ironically it came from some ignorant fans as well. One tried to verbally acost me (as interpreted by tone and approach) and said he "hoped i was happy" took me a sec but i said "Yeah, actually i am!" to wit he said we got lucky and i then left it as "We still won though?? " Meanwhile another fan told a fellow Zip "I hope you enjoy your ride home" Again "confused" because this was not in a friendly tone..... All in all though met some great fans there and they wished us the best and hope to meet up in the cup! Even had a good conversation with one of their freshman walk-ons who complimented us on a tough match.

b10 haters.... Yes the Zips have clearly left a bad taste in b10 mouths  We represent both an inferior program that isn't part of the clique and a powerful empire that needs to be destroyed. The irony is sickening! Then again... "WE ARE....... BIG10 CHAMPS" doesn't help either

I believe.... The best one yet
