tbozeglav Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 A win is a win, and we should be happy to have that, but for some reason I feel really upset with this game. I felt like we didn't play as well as we should have. Porter seemed to share these same feelings in his post-game interview. Granted WMU was taller and a little bigger than us, making it hard for cross shots to do anything, but it seemed like every time we tried to set a play a WMU player was there to break it up. As an aside, there were 3 shots during the first half that should have been goals. I dont know what kind of bad voodoo was on that goal (maybe there's fail overflowing onto Lee Jackson from the Info?), but we had 3 shots go off the posts. Very very frustrating. Did anyone get a good look at WMU's goal? I was down there and I swear the foul was before the shot and thought the referee called to goal off, but was incredibly surprised to see it stand. Maybe someone else had a better angle? Either way... its a win and we'll move on to Creighton. I have full faith in coach Porter and his statement that he "guarantees we'll be better on Wednesday". RootforRoo44 Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 Take a look at some of heights of their players...the may have been one of the smaller teams we play this season. Quote
tbozeglav Posted October 24, 2010 Author Report Posted October 24, 2010 This could be true, but from just watching a bunch of their guys, quite a few had a height advantage over our guys which I am sure played into our inability to produce off cross shots. I hate to be so nitpicky about the game. Had those 3 goals off the posts gone in, this is a completely different game. I feel WMU played a really good game against us, but got extremely lucky our shots didn't go and that helped keep them in the game. I look forward to how the team plays on Wednesday against, on paper, a much better team than WMU. Quote

We don't normally have any problem with that. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 WMU played the best game of their season, easily. Akron played one of the most uninspired games of theirs. WMU was well coached and had a good gameplan for us. They played for possession and pressed hard on defense, something we try to do every game. That said, we were faster and more skilled at every position but both our passing and spacing was sloppy and WMU took advantage of it. It shouldn't have been that close even without those shots hitting the posts. The goal frame was a better goalie than their keeper. Quote
Zip_ME87 Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 I agree the Zips played "down" last night. The usual intensity didn't seem to be there, but I must admit that I felt uneasy prior to this game. I think it was because I didn't go to the football game, and I just felt uneasy about the 'failure' in the air. It's strange that I never felt that way last season when we had a football game and soccer game on the same day. Perhaps it's because football wasn't a complete failure last year and didn't seem to drag down the whole campus. At any rate, there were several times during the game that I heard Kofi yelling to his teammates to pick up their intensity. Good to hear the team captains taking charge on the field. It was also great to see Ben Speas score what became the winning goal. I've been wanting to see Ben get more playing time this season. Quote
