Akron...the new Syracuse

Half empty? There were 21,000 people in a stadium that seats 26,000. It was also snowing at game time.

Have you guys ever had 21,000 for any game...ever?

I am not really sure what you want us Akron fans to say? We wish we would have lost? We didn't deserve any of this? This is a fluke and we are going to suck? Guess what. We are conference champs. Of the same conference you are in. Guess what that means. We are better than you. Not better last year or and previous year. I won't even mention future years. We are better than you this year. We beat a team TWICE that spanked you 35-17. We are conference champs. You are not. Suck on that.

Yes, it was so empty that the first topic on a local sports radio show after Toledo's win was why didn't anyone go. I was there, don't pretend there were more people than what there were.

By the way, Akron has had crowds over 30,000 many times in the past.

I think msopher is full of it.

The West side of campus is Ottawa Hills which is full of seven-figure homes including the home Tom Cruise just bought which is two blocks from campus.

The entire North side of campus is Old Orchard which is a beautiful community full of lawyers, doctors, professors, etc..

The East side of campus is all student living for the most part as well as the engineering school and the multi-million dollar codo complex just built for students for luxury living.

The South side of campus is the lower income side but not too bad.

The University of Toledo is NOT close to poverty like Akron is. Not even close. In addition, the campus is completely enclosed with no real mixing into the area like at Akron.

Yes, Akron has made some improvements but, like one of our football coach said last year, "...It is still Akron..."

Your program will not be one of the top programs in the MAC on a consistent basis. Not even close. Like I said before, it takes more than one good game to make a program. You guys are 13-10 in your last 23 games and 20-15 in your last 35 games. Big deal ! You had to BEG your students and fans to go to the MAC Championship game and it was the absolute worst attendance for a Championship game in history.

Like I said, enjoy your 15-minutes of fame.

FYI to all Zips fans, ToledoRockets is an a$$hole and does not represent the views of Toledo fans.

On a side note, he's probably the guy who dresses up in the big blue dildo costume, so it's no wonder the guy is a pr**k.

You need to stop. Ignore ToledoRockets and get off this MACC attendance at Toledo. They drew over 20,000 for the game, but it looked empty for most of it because Marshall was up by 3 TD's in the first half and everyone left, despite the fact that Toledo won the game in the end. Who really cares right now? If Akron hosted a MACC game, I'm sure at least 20,000 would show up. Let's move on and talk about Memphis. Don't let this moron add fuel to your fire.

Akron has never had over 35,000 at a game unless it ewas on the road. The largest crowd for Akron was about 34,000 in like 1993 when you got blown-out by I-AA Youngstown and the majority of that crowd was the Youngstown fans.

20,000 at Akron...no way! You guys had 8,000 for your arch rival in a game you HAD to win to go to the MACC ! You had 7,600 for Ohio !

There is nobody, outside of Akron, that believes that you guys have the best team in the MAC.

Like I keep saying, enjoy your 15-minutes. You'll be battling Youngstown State for the Gateway Championship in a couple of years when you get bounced from the MAC.

You could take in to consideration that it was about 10 degrees out with winds so bad people were having trouble walking. My blanket was so frozen I couldn't wrap it around myself. It also happened to be Thanksgiving morning. Over 7 of those 8,000 were Akron people too, no one from Can't was at the game.

Being the best isn't about what people "believe" as you say. It's about winning when it counts. You keep telling us to "enjoy our 15-minutes." Which is what we are doing. Yet you keep trying to give us reasons not to be happy with our team? You're an idiot.

Here is a link to a site that shows the stats for the game in Toledo. As we all know, these numbers are frequently inflated by those reporting them. Akron inflates their numbers all the time and so do the other schools.

There is no way this number was reported accurately but I'll put it out there anyhow.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just getting up to date on some of the threads here...this was a good one. I have always thought there were parallels between Akron and Syracuse and that UA could get to a similar plane if NEOhio really got behind it.

I love that the Xavier alum is backing the Zips-- because it is good for his community. I moved away from NEOhio over 10 years ago, and I can't help but look back in bewilderment at both the slavish devotion to Ohio State and the general apathy towards UA and (though I am loathe to say it) Can't State. NEOhio would be so much further ahead economically and socially had a single major university been allowed to flourish there. The reality is that OSU, like Columbus in general, has a vested interest in stunting NEOhio institutions and the OSU-interest bloc does just that when and where it can. In athletics, that is manifested in OSU only playing in-state schools in football because of legislative fiat.

There will eventually be 3 major public research institutions in Ohio-- Cincinnati in the south, OSU in the center, and probably some combination or confederation of Akron and Can't in the north.
