Zach's post got me thinking, which is often dangerous.

What if.... In the locker room, before the CMU game Sunday, KD just threw his hands in the air and said " Screw it guys, it can't get much worse. I'm not calling anything tonight, I'll make the substitutions but I just want you guys to go out there and have fun"

What would happen ???

Uh oh... be careful. ;)

Honestly, I don't think it would change anything. It all begins in practice. Dambrot runs incredibly difficult practices. it's drilled into their heads every day for hours that they need to work on their problems. So even if he gives them a long leash in the games, they're still thinking too much about their own faults. Dambrot needs to relax in practice, use that time to let the guys work out their own problems and remind them to have fun every once in a while.

It seems to me like that's what he's currently doing anyways. I am not seeing any deffensive schemes or any offnesive playcalling... So what would the difference be?

Obviously you are not familiar with the complexities of coach K's offense. I'll refresh for you below:

Coach Dambrot runs a combination of different offenses. First he runs a fast break similar to NC which tries to get the ball inside. From there on ball reversal we screen down and the get into baseline runner, with our 4/5 men on blocks and a player running off their screens. If the backside post helps we flush hi for a hi/lo look. We can sprint into on ball screens and either pick and pop or pick and roll. We run a lot of quick hitters always looking to get the ball inside and then play out of the post. Depending on what the defense does will determine which cut we run. We have set plays to isolate individuals in the post, sets designed to shoot the 3 and sets designed to drive the ball. We can run a set that is motion offense, we can spread the floor and use the ball screen to create total defensive rotations. We run a lot of different things to utilize our personnel. Hope this gives you a quick overview of our offense.

Yes, that's it. The key to everything: Don't practice so hard, and don't work on your weaknesses. The key to good coaching: Let the players figure it out for themselves.

Z has it right.

That was the point of the hypothetical scenario. Just about every breath of a Zip on both ends of the floor is choreographed. I'd like to see some running and having a good time out there. A pleasing type of basketball for the players to play and the fans to watch. Face it, we have not been the most enertaining team on the map.

Who knows what would happen. But my basic thought right now is that we've simply lost some of our talent in recent years. A few years ago, we just had better players than we have right now. We can't find those couple of guys who can carry the team that we had a few years ago. We've been on a slight decline over the last couple of seasons, and we just haven't realized it because we still managed to find a way to get to the MAC title game again.

This year in particular, KD is our greatest asset. We need to get as much out of what we have as we possibly can.

There is an old adage that you don't work on your weaknesses. You work on your strengths.

If you neglect your strengths to work on your weaknesses than you wind up with no strengths.

I have no idea what I just said.

except that if a tennis player has a great serve and a poor backhand, he can not spend all his time working on improving his backhand. Then he will wind up with a mediocre backhand and a mediocre serve.

Just feed the ball to Zeke and have him stuff it in. Right now that is our greatest strength.
