ZachTheZip Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/bask...ml?sct=cb_t2_a8 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NCAA has approved adding an arc three feet from the basket, inside which a defender cannot take a charge. The organization said Thursday its Playing Rules Oversight Panel had approved several recommended rules changes for college basketball during a conference call Monday. The women's 3-point line will move back a foot to 20 feet, 9 inches next season, the same distance the men have used since 2008-09. In both the men's and women's games, the terminology for fouls will be changed to match the NBA. Intentional fouls will now be called Flagrant 1 and flagrant fouls will be called Flagrant 2. Women's teams will also test a 10-second half-court rule in exhibition games next season. The men's and women's basketball rules committees recommended the changes earlier this month. I like all of these rule changes. Having an actual painted arc takes away power from the referees who were previously allowed to call charges under the basket however they saw fit. Not having two separate three-point lines on the court will make womens games less confusing for the fans, name changes to flagrant/intentional fouls also helps. If you recall, there were several instances last season where the type of foul called was in question, when the MAC officials decided that lifting Zeke's arms above his head was illegal. Quote

Something tells me with the "quality" of the MAC refs, the painted arc isn't going to mean much. It will make it easier to see when they have obviously screwed up, but many of us could see that already. I'd really like to see them make some kind of modification to the elbow to the face rule that bit Zeke (and others across the country) so many times last year. I understand the purpose of the rule, but it seemed like about mid season a lot of defenders started to figure it out as a way to get a cheap flagrant call and an easy trip to the free throw line. This is not going to change the inconsistency of the difference between a block and a charge, which is by far the biggest issue. By nature, it's a very difficult call to make. And with MAC refs, you tend to have more mistakes than usual. Now we're giving these incompetent refs one more thing (the arc) to focus on when trying to make an already difficult call correctly? And this is somehow taking authority out of the referees hands? I think you're being very optimistic. Quote

Let's hope that Taylor Ruper and the rest of the ladies adjust quickly to this...it could be a great year to be a Lady Zip basketball fan!!!!! I expect a top 4 regular season finish and a trip the championship game Quote
