ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 I would love to see who is getting most of the playing time in these games. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Highlights for the Quebec game. Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Speaking of who's getting how much playing time, I'm dying to see some stats. GoZips had me expecting stats from what he wrote in another thread: ..... Was suggested to Tom Gaffney of the ABJ and Akron's SID to post the game stats in their articles. Neither was planning to do that until they were asked. The game stats will give us fans an opportunity to see starting line ups, who comes off the bench first, and the player's overall performance. Yeah, and I am still waiting along with the rest of you. Would be interesting to see both of today's stat sheets. KD eschewed the suggestion to run a couple of practices using FIBA rules. I think the trapezoid free throw area and the twenty-four second clock both helped the Zips develop. The trapezoid some what negates Zeke's height advantage. Not even sure if Zeke played a lot of minutes. I believe that most of the minutes thus far have gone to the newer players with two or three of the more experienced players on the court with them to act as teaching guides. The objective is to develop team chemistry and sharpen individual skills. I can hear Clint Eastwood, er, KD, yelling, "improvise, adapt, overcome". The next two games will test the Zips and give a much better read on where the kids are. Quote
GoZips Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Good game report on YouTube by coach Dambrot. Be sure to watch clear to the end. Last 30 seconds a treat. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Don't think this has been posted yet. Quote
K92 Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Good game report on YouTube by coach Dambrot. Be sure to watch clear to the end. Last 30 seconds a treat. Awesome. We need KD to do these kind of reports for football too. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Up 14-11 after the 1st quarter at McGill. I think they're playing FIBA rules again. Apparently there's no air conditioning so the gym is very hot. A good test for the team's conditioning. Starters were Green, Justice, Deji, Gilliam, and Marshall. There's also a new interview up, this time with Tree. I'm having technical difficulties, so someone else will have to put that in this thread. Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Tree interview below. Like the way he says at the end he wants to bring some swagger to the team. Also, today is Rico's 20th birthday. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Up 65-36 after the 3rd quarter. I like the set-up of the schedule. Four easier games leading into a game that can simulate a MAC-level team. You take the first four to see what kind of team you have, and then put them to the test against an opponent that is about the level you'll see from your conference opponents. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Final: Zips win 85-57. Top scorers were Gilliam (17) and Egner (14). Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Still no Zips box scores. But at least a hint of stats in the results story at GoZips.com: Junior forward Chauncey Gilliam led the way with 17 points, going 7-for-10 from the field in 16 minutes. Sophomore forward Josh Egner was the only other Zip in double figures, pitching in with 14 points and six boards. Egner was 6-for-8 from the floor. The nice thing about Tuesday's game with Carleton University is that they actually take their basketball pretty seriously. Not only will the game be webcast, as mentioned in another thread, but Carleton actually posts complete box scores immediately following their exhibition games. The box scores for their games with La Salle, Illinois State and Central Florida are already up: Carleton University Box Scores Quote
ZZZips Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 From the McGill vs Zips stats sheet ZIP's numbers: FG% 34-61 55.7% 3FG 5-12 41.7% FT% 12-25 48% Most minutes: Justice 22, Egner 21, Green 21, Marshal 20, Abreu 17 All UA players scored except for Petersen Redmen out rebounded the Zips 31-29 They don't track assists. Turnovers: Zips 12, Redmen 26 Not surprising based upon the starting lineup and the constant lineup changes due to the heat, the Zips bench outscored the starters 50-35. Attendance: McGill 170, Akron 7 Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Thanks for the additional stats! I think I see why Carleton University is serious about its basketball team. Their combined regular and post season record over the last 11 years is 288-29. That's a darned impressive record at any level of basketball. Quote
GoZips Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Carlton will be an interesting match up. Look over their previous box scores. Phillip Scrubb gets to the free throw line a lot. Their opponents commit a lot more fouls than Carlton does. Why? Wonder if its FIBA rules. Darn good thing the Zips have plenty of depth. They will need it with all those happy whistles. I smell a rat. Must be girls rules. No doubt Carlton will be the Zips sternest test thus far. Glad the kids get some rest as their legs must be like jello right about now. Be nice to blow these dudes out of the gym. Quote
GoZips Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 On Gozips.com in the article on today's game there is a link to the game stats. Box score and play-by-play given. Tree badly needs to work on free throw shooting. This could hurt the Zps and/or keep him on the bench during tight games. Was a delight to be able to review today's action in detail. Egner appears to be a beast. Micheal Green gave a good account of himself. What's this? ONE assist for the team? We playing street ball? Rebounding still seems to be an issue. The stats should warm your hearts. The Zips played well. McGill is suppose to be a good team. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Rebounding suffers when you hit all your shots. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Article from McGill U What kind of uniforms are we wearing? Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 The official box score. now we can finally break down the stats. Quote
GoZips Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Article from McGill U What kind of uniforms are we wearing? They appear to be a mish-mash of practice jeresys. They look like what I saw at the several practices I attended. Probably the Zips are getting new uniforms for the upcoming season. Quote
ZZZips Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Article from McGill U What kind of uniforms are we wearing? Last season's practice jerseys. Some new players are wearing last year's seniors numbers. Quote
Quickzips Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Looking over the box score a couple of things stand out: As pointed out earlier, Tree REALLY has to work on his FT shooting. There is no way you can leave a guy on the floor at the end of a reasonably close game who shoots that poorly from the line. Good thing we aren't exactly hurting for depth at the forward positions. For that matter the entire team needs to work on FT shooting. 12-25 as a team, YUK! Not only did Gilliam lead us in scoring, he did it with a very efficient 7-10 from the field, 1-1 from 3 and 2-2 from the line. I was concerned that maybe he would be a volume scorer who can get a lot of points, but needs a lot of shots to get there and isn't terribly efficient. From this small sample size that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm liking what I'm seeing in the videos and in this box score from Egner. I had my concerns that maybe he was just going to be a high energy guy that wasn't particularly skilled. I've seen some nice basketball moves from him in the videos, and this box score looks pretty good for him. 21 minutes, 14 points, 6 rebounds, 6-8 shooting, 2-2 from the line. Need to cut back on those 3 TO's though. I was starting to get a little worried about the lack of news about Brian Walsh, but he's starting to show up more in the highlight reels and his box score looks pretty good for only getting 12 minutes. Zeke with only one rebound in 20 minutes concerns me a bit. I suppose you don't get as many rebounding opportunities when your guys shoot 56% for the game, but the opponent only shot 33%. I know Zeke is more shot blocker than rebounder, but I want to see more of an effort from him on the glass. I am not as concerned about the lack of assists. I've read on a number of occassions that international scoring is MUCH more difficult to register an assist than it is stateside. I wouldn't put too much stock into the assist numbers. It is pretty clear that KD is sticking to his guns on wanting to mix and match guys on this trip without a set rotation. All 14 guys registered minutes and 11 of them got to double digits with nobody registering more than Justice's 22. That said, it is difficult to draw a whole lot more out of the box score when you have such a limited sample size from each guy. Quote
