Blue & Gold Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I was looking at the Sporting News Basketball Preview rag today and I found two things interesting. 1. They have the Zips picked to win the MAC East, w/ Can't Statecks as #2. 2. They have the MAC listed as a "High Major" conference. They had High Majors, Mid-Majors and Low-Majors, and, yep, I was pleasantly surprised to see them list the MAC w/ the High Majors. Quote
Lion Girl Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 What other conferences are listed as High Major? That sounds very suspect to me. Quote

To me, the MAC needs to regularly receive more than one NCAA bid to be considered anything more than a mid-major. Mid-majors get multiple bids to other post-seaseon tournaments (NIT, etc.). Hence, most non-BCS leagues are-low majors, there are a few mid-majors, and only a small handful of high-majors (the MVC and C-USA come to mind). Quote
taxpayer Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Nice headline. Good to know someone likes the Zips other than fellow Zips then..... Link to article? Quote

Blue & Gold Posted September 6, 2011 Author Report Posted September 6, 2011 What other conferences are listed as High Major? That sounds very suspect to me. Good question. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the magazine. I do remember that they were your usual BCS suspects. But I also specifically remember the MAC, Mountain West, Missouri Valley & C-USA also listed as High Majors. (They probably had the Atlantic-10 in this category as well.) Quote

Does that mean that the MAC is a one bid conference again? Quote

Geez thanks. It changes nothing for me, unless it means that the top team that does not win the MAC tournament will have a better chance of being considered for an at-large bid. Quote
Dave in Green Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 I just hope that Sporting News did a thorough analysis of this season's edition of the Zips and the MAC to reach their conclusion, and didn't just do a quick and dirty plug in of last season's champion. I'd like to think that a knowledgeable college basketball analyst could look at the current Zips roster and come to the conclusion that there's as much or more talent there this season than last.
