U of A Fight Song

Good thought FearTheRoo!!! The band should come out w/ a CD for tailgaters! I was down in Cowlumbus a few weeks ago and stopped in a very nice Suckeyes shop. The OSU band must have had 15 CDs available to purchase. Possible tracks could include, in addition to the Zips fight song:1) a compilation of MAC fight songs2) classic college fight songs3) Ivy League fight songs (I don't know, just thought that'd be spiffy  4) an '80's compilation5) a '50's compilation6) classical music, perhaps similar to Disney's FantasiaI really don't know how many of these we'd sell, but it would be a good product offering and perhaps enhance the image of the marching band.Could I say something here. I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but I do think the band's nickname "The Pride of Ohio" is a bit presumptuous. Does anyone else agree? I think that nickname just sort of makes critics roll their eyes and the faithful blush. Why not, "The Pride of the City"? That has a ring to it. Or just the good old "Pride of the Zips"?

Here's an improved quality version of the Blue and Gold (mp3). I had to zip it to upload it here...For those of you looking for a new CD, you should email the current Directors @ http://www3.uakron.edu/bands/marching/staff/index.html. I bet they'd consider updating the CD if there was enough interest out there...

I think the Akron band is a friggin joke. The tempo is always off and they have not added a song to the playlist in the last 12 years since I have been going to games. The band kids all dress like dorks in golf shirts unlike the OSU band or Indiana band where they really get into the game, dress wacky and are an attraction.I have been to games in many MAC arenas and think that Akron's is by far the worst. The best thing about this years games is that the band is upstairs so fans like me in the upper seats dont have to look at the disinterested members sitting courtside and looking bored by having to be at the game. That really pissed me off. You have great seats and 80% of the nad is sitting reading a book until they get a chance to play. I overheard some of the band members last year leaving the arena and complaining that they had to be at all of the basketball games saying they would rather be working where they could make better money. I asked them why they felt like that and one of them told me that they did not get paid enough to play at games. I responded with surprised that they got paid to play at games and the guy told me that they get cash to play at the games and that was the only reason why they were there.

since when do they get paid? I know the marching band gets a small scholarship (it was $100 when I was in). We were all volunteer for basketball and we used to have 40-60 show up and have a good time. We sat in the bleachers on the visitor end (still marked "BAND") and made lots of noise. I don't know what's up with them now. They sound terrible in the corner... even with the sound system.

I agree with Willy - the pep band sucks to high heaven now and has for the last few years. Most of the kids look like they are on prozac. If they are getting paid they need to get fired becuase they are terrible. They should not have been moved upstairs, they should have been booted out of the arena altogether. If you cannot play some tunes that have been written in the last 20 years it may be time to go all taped music.

Does anyone remember a few years back when the pep band had a bunch of guys that really got into the game. funny thing was they only did it for a few games and then it was like they were told to stop. I remember everytime someone came to the foul line and they dribbled the band would count 1, 2, 3, 4 -- they were entertaining -- what happened to them?

I was one of those guys that really got into the game... And yes, we were all volunteers... Where else can you go have fun with your friends, watch Joe Jakubik, Roth (Moose), yell, and cheer, and really get into the game...I remember getting a warning from the refs for a technical foul for being too loud!!! (when we sat in the upper deck)... Also that time we all threw toilet paper onto the floor... NCAA, and NIT playoff games...Those were the days... Maybe they should have an alumni band get back togther for BB band once a year...Unfortunately I live 12 hrs. away - but really would like to see them get "fired" up...Go Zips! Watch them on ESPN when they're on national TV (ESPN2)

hey U of A band: time to make a CD that can be used for tailgating. most other colleges have it. Sell it for profit for the band.  Hell, even BG has one!!!
Unfortunately it would be quite difficult to make a CD of including the "Blue and Gold" our primary fight song...because we don't even own the rights to our own song. I believe it still belongs to the Fred Waring estate. We can't make CDs and sell them unless we own (or at least have rights to use) the content.

Actually, the Blue and Gold was included on a 45 (1985), Cassette Tape (1888), and a CD (2000) that was for sale (and sold quite well), that included the Akron Blue and Gold.It might have changed, but do think a CD of favorite songs from the Zips would be a great idea...See you at Alumni band this year.InterFX

If an estate owns the song, then pay the damn royalties. Who cares, I'd pay $35 bucks for something that didn't sound like the crap I downloaded from the internet. Hell, I was at Michigan Tech this past winter, way, way, way up in the boonies in the UP and They had stacks of marching band CD's for sale. I think it is downright embarrasing that we're a D1-A school that can't market as well as a DII school located in the middle of Lake Superior. Lets get our act together already!
