skip-zip Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 Thats great that every player that plays for him loves him, thats a plus. But winning is apart of it as well. Winning and building Tradition. We didn't have it with him here for ten years, can he bring it now???????????? Once again...he was the offensive coordinator, not the head coach. O-coordinators don't build a tradition. Besides, nobody can answer your question. I mean, unless you know for sure who can do this. Who is he? To be fair, even though he was Owens right hand man, maybe he shouldn't take a lot of blame for that unimpressive era of Akron football. But, if you've gotten noticed by your colleagues at the D-1A level, coordinators usually get other similar opportunities, maybe even at bigger schools, or even opportunities to move up to a HC position. But in this case, even after a lengthy OC tenure at the D1-A level, this "great" coach that some people describe fell dramatically to a D-II school in crappy Detroit, and has been there for quite a few years now. That's something anyone has to wonder about, at the very least. Some people have asked why Bowden hasn't returned to I-A. And whether the people who do the hiring at our level know something that we don't. It's a legitimate concern in this case as well. Quote

I think a lot of people noticed him which is why he won awards. There is a bid difference between getting noticed and hired. Not too many black coaches were getting hired when Winters was on the job market after the Owens era. The color of a coaches skin matters because it matter to older donors who grew up in a different time. Things are different now, but nine years ago they weren't like they are now. Quote

I figured we'd see a response like this. Yep, the views in this country have changed incredibly since 2004 Race is always a difficult subject. I think there have been a lot of interviewing policy changes in the past six years opening the door for a lot of black candidates to at least get a shot, when in the past they would have never had an interview. It can be viewed as good or bad depending on a person's personal opinions. I like to think it is a godo thing. Although it is the NFL, but the Rooney rule produced the Steelers current coach....I'd take him any day over the list of retreads they were interviewing. In 2004, there were a lot of people who thought there would never be a black President and we have one today. While I don't agree with his politics, maybe his being President for four years (we can only hope) will be a great legacy and a point of inspiration for those who never thought of themselves as being able to accomplish great things. Mississippi State had a black coach and we are actually at a point now where a black coach can get fired without the Al Sharptons of the world having a fit...and that is a great thing for this country. As the WWII generation passes away, we will see more blacks getting opportunities. Let's be honest, folks of that generation loved the Celtics when I was growing up and we all know why. On some level, I get it because people tend to root for the familiar. They certainly didn't mind watching a couple blacks play on a team, but many certainly didn't want one coaching their team. They also tend to be the big dollar donors at the largest schools. If big dollar donors don't want it, it doesn't happen. I actually think views are changing and interviewing policies are changing. Not sure if one is the cause of the other or even if they are related, but there is change with both....for the better. I'm not saying Paul was passed over because of his skin color at Akron at all. He wasn't the right fit until now. He might have had better opportunities right after Akron if, nine years ago, the climate was like it is now. He may not have had to take over the worst DII team in the country if things were different. Quote
Roo Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 Alright internet tough guy. It is a forum. he can come on here and talk about any coach he wants. You don't have to play for the school or be a board member for several years to give an opinion. If you'd like to find out how tough I am off the internet I'd be happy to chat with you at the VCU game internet punk. I never said people couldn't give their opinion. I was simply pointing out that a new username came on here and immediately started blasting out one guy. If you don't think that's suspicious than you're as dense as I've always taken you to be. Did he really just say that??? ^^^^ Wow....no wonder why this board has gone downhill the last couple years. Internet thugs, lol.....ha. No issue with a new member posting about a potential candidate. He has worked for some big programs, got a promotion to OC this year but I saw a post that he may not have been calling plays. That is def something to worry about. Can anybody confirm that? One year as an OC is a stretch as well, that seems like a big jump to be a HC but then again, at Akron, you cant expect good coordinators to come in and be head coaches. Just not realistic. Quote
HollywoodZip Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 He definitely called the plays. In fact if you watched Temple's bowl game the HC gave him huge props for his decisions during the game. Quote

Dave in Green Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 So now there are internet rumors that Loeffler is a potential OC candidate for Les Miles at LSU and Urban Meyer at tOSU, who had experience with Loeffler as an assistant at Florida. Those are two pretty big endorsements in the college coaching world. No guarantees that Loeffler would be able to turn the Zips around as a rookie HC. But who of the available options has a higher upside? By all accounts, Loeffler appears to be a bright, young, personable up-and-comer. I think it's a big bonus that he's a Barberton native. Not many good, young coaches would look at this area as a place to call home as opposed to a place to avoid or escape from. Since Loeffler is FootballScoop.com's top pick for the position now that Winters is out of the way, I'm getting used to the idea that he's the likeliest Zips candidate at this point if he doesn't get a better offer from LSU or tOSU. OSU already hired their QB coach/OC and LSU has Studwara. Unless Stud get a HC job somewhere that isn't happening at LSU. Quote
Zipgrad01 Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 Those postings I had are from last off season. It just shows that he has drawn some interest from some pretty prominant programs. Quote
xu9697 Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 Spoke with a Michigan fan here at work today (his cousin played football at UM and he actually worked at UM for a couple years)= he says Loeffler would be a great hire. Said that a lot of UM players wanted to keep Loeffler on as the OC when Carr left. Just throwing it out there. I remember lots of ND folks were sad to lose Ianallo as well. Quote
