bobbyake Posted July 21, 2012 Report Posted July 21, 2012 When forward Ben Speas signed with the Crew as a “homegrown player” player in January, he said he wouldn’t have left North Carolina early to sign with anyone else. Speas, a Stow, Ohio, native who played at Akron as a freshman before transferring, probably wouldn’t say that now. The Crew expected big things from Speas — technical director Brian Bliss said that if he had been in the Major League Soccer combine, “he would have been a top-12 player there” — and team officials made it clear they were glad they had a chance to sign a player who had come through the Crew Soccer Academy without him entering the draft. But after he missed a big part of this season because of a sports hernia, he seems to have fallen out of the team’s plans and apparently isn’t happy about it. He has been healthy for more than a month and isn’t playing, and didn’t even make the field when the Crew trained 11 on 11.His agent said that they don’t like the way he is being treated by the coaching staff, which is hardly surprising. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/sp...gj5ia2qg-1.html Quote

Maybe Speas can transfer again? I like Ben, but he's definitely confirming his immaturity. I think he left Akron because Caleb was pushing him, and he didn't like the way he was "being treated". (Just my guess because I can't see a coach of Caleb's caliber just letting a guy with Speas' talent transfer unless he sees an attitude detrimental to the team.) A player who's really good enough to play would take the "challenge" and be more determined than ever in practice/reserve play to do as the coach(es) ask and prove that he should be on the first team. It's one thing to be able to look great in a game or 2 versus really fitting into a team and helping them win game after game without being the star of every game. Quote

That's what I would have expected even without the whining. He's new to the Crew this season and coming off an injury. The reserves are where I would expect the coaches to play him. I had thought about going to Obetz for this match, but decided my time was better spent at home watching the Crew Juniors U20 play for the Super 20 Championship. Unfortunately, they decided not to play Andrian McAdams in goal today further increasing my disdain for the Crew. The Crew Juniors lost 3-1. Perhaps they had the wrong GK. Quote

Well he even said on twitter that it's his first time playing 90 minutes since the national championship match. I just think it's strange timing that after his tantrum about not getting playing time he gets plenty of it. Guess it was fine though since they beat United reserves 4-1 Quote

Guess it was fine though since they beat United reserves 4-1 That's what doesn't make sense about his not understanding not getting playing time. If he hasn't played 90 minutes since last December, then his coaches couldn't possibly think he was fully "match fit", especially at the professional level even for the reserves. Quote
