good ref crew

The first half of the game on Wed moved very quickly because there was hardly any whistles. The refs did a great job in letting the players control the game. The second half moved a little slower but I thought the entire game was reffed extremely well. Somebody told me that one of the refs was from the Detroit area and does Big 10 games. Zeke did not have any fouls the entire game because the refs did not call any cheap fouls. I get tired of refs calling a hand check 40 feet from the basket when it does not affect play. I am hoping that the same ref crew will come back and ref at the Q.

I have to agree. The refs let the players determine the outcome.

Good thread. If we dump on the refs who are whistle happy, we should give credit to the good ones. So let's give a tip of the hat to these three refs -- one who mainly covers Horizon/MAC games, one who mostly does Big Ten/Summit, and one who's primarily Summit/MAC:

Bryan Anslinger

Mike Sanzere

Lamont Simpson

Good thread.

One point that wasn't brought up in this article about Zeke:

http://www.ohio.com/sports/ua-notebook-cen...-slump-1.266868

is that he wasn't in foul trouble throughout the game and was not constantly frustrated by the refs. He was able to just play his game. Sure, Dambrot's personal attention may have helped, but it wasn't the major factor in Zeke's solid performance against BUGS, IMO. Well done by the officials.

I'm thinking you have a different definition of "whistle happy" than I do.

Probably not. Regardless of how I feel about referees doing their job, as a fan, I'd rather see less whistles just like everyone else.

Unless, of course, they are not blowing enough whistles when the Zips are getting fouled, in which case, I scream about the whistle not being blown enough ;)

I'm not sure why someone would imply that blowing less whistles means that you are a good referee.

The responsibility of the officials is to do a good job applying the rules, whether the fans like it or not.

To me the determination of whether a game is well officiated or not isn't dependent upon how many times the whistle is blown overall. I just think a game is poorly officiated when the whistle is blown consistently due to incidental contact that does not result in a significant advantage for either team on that particular play. There can be well officiated games with a lot of fouls called as well as well officiated games where few are called.

To me it is about whether contact creates an unfair benefit or not. Something like handchecking fouls 50 feet from the hoop are the ones I hate to see called. The other issue I have is when an official assumes that a foul is going to take place before it happens. They should always be sure that they see the foul before they call it.
