zipsbandman
I heard KD's pregame and postgame interview. Before the game, he was saying things like the seed does not matter in the tournament and Can't gets the 1 seed, big deal. He also emphasized how hard it is to play on the road and win. In the postagame, he didn't seemed phased about the beating. Perhaps the zips were sort of looking past this game to the Can't game? I mean come on. We beat that same bulls team by almost 20 in the JAR and now we lose to them by double digits? What do you all think?
fear the brown roo
i think you want to go into the mac tourney with momentum. losing 3 of 4 games isn't momentum. i'm not saying the sky is falling. screw Can't state
GP1
Akron is 1-3 in the last four games with a chance to go 1-4 Saturday. Momentum going into the MACC is very important. Right now they don't have it. Remember last year WVU played poorly throughout the season and made a late season and Big East Tournament run and they made it to the Elite 8. Akron isn't on a run enough to do will in the MAC Tournament unless they win this Saturday. I like KD, but for him to down play that loss last night is just intellectually dishonest. This team needs a win Saturday in the worst way. They have played too good all season to piss it away now. Let's get some momentum Saturday! The pressure is really on Akron. zipsbandman
I will add this comment by Dambrot as well. This was before the game too."We want to peak in the MAC tournament" "You don't want to peak now"
GoZips88
It's one thing not to peak too soon. It's another to at LEAST keep it interesting. It seemed like the Buffalo game was over before it got started and we never made a serious run. Can't was down by 11 or 13 up there, sucked it up, and did what they had to to win. If we can't find a way to score consistently AND not take a game off defensively, we're going to be in trouble up in Cleveland. The Can't game on Saturday is huge in my opinion - last chance to build any kind of confidence and momentum. I also want the 3rd seed - there's no denying Can't is hot right now. mrelegazna
Buffalo played a great game (52% shooting, 8 TO's) on senior night. They always play well at home, Can't had to come back from 13 down there to win here in double overtime. While I'm not happy that we were not able to do the same, I'm definitely not panicking over this loss and it sounds like KD isn't either. Big Zip
I've mentioned it before -- OSU fans, Steelers fans they got it easy... It's easy been a fan of a team that wins consistently and has titles. Rooting for the Zips or any team in NE Ohio you are a glutton for punishment...It's hard damn work getting up and smacked down so many times. Here's to hoping KD rallies the troops after this game and uses this loss as a lesson to motivate the boys for a a four game winning streak and a trip to the dance! I want the third seed and a Can't/Akron final at the Q.
zipsbandman
I agree that the Can't game is everything, and possibly the team does too, and maybe that is why we saw such a poor performance. We lose that, and I think we are done. Who can't get excited for this one? The JAR is going to be packed beyond capacity and the zips will be duking it out with our hated archrival. GP1
I will add this comment by Dambrot as well. This was before the game too."We want to peak in the MAC tournament" "You don't want to peak now" Interesting quote. The thing about peaking is that it assumes your on an upward trend. This team is not on an upward trend right now and is further from the peak than they were before they went to Nevada. I still believe this team can do well in the Tournament, but I hope the Nevada game does not signify a turning point when we all look back at the end of the season. zipsbandman
Buffalo simply had more to play for last night. Buffalo was playing for pride, as well as their survival in the tournament, since you need that first round home game to have any chance of getting to Cleveland.Looking at our situation now, we clearly have more to play for than Can't does on Saturday, and our play will reflect that. We are playing for seeds but most importantly bragging rights. The crowd better blow the roof off the JAR. (maybe then we can get a new bball arena) This game can either be a disaster, or it can be our coming out party where we find our momentum by beating the regular season champs before the tourney. Let's peak on Saturday.
bigzipguy
Good posts everyone!! Anybody that saw my post under the "not good" thread lastnight noticed that I praised KD for the job he has done this year. But!!!!In his efforts to win as many games as possible during the regular season(which is the idea when you are trying for any type of post-season bid), he now has a tired team.I do not care how mentally and physically tough a player is, all those minutes add up.He should have gone deeper, into the bench right after Bubba left. ESPECIALLY AT THE GUARD POSITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This slide actually started in Jan, though it did not showup immediately in the W-L column. zipsbandman
Another interesting fact here:If we win on Saturday, I believe the three seed is ours due to tiebreakers. From a strategic standpoint, that is where we want to be because I don't want to see Can't until the finals. If this is not enough to motivate our team Saturday, than our season is lost. The performance of this team now seems to be up then down. They were up for Ohio after being down at Miami, then they were down against Buffalo. Yes, Miami and Buffalo played great, but even so we should have beat them. I feel that the coach should have come out strong about the team's effort. If we lose Saturday and then in the first round of the tournament (God forbid), what will KD say then .... "Wait til next year"?
mrelegazna
I disagree. Some losses warrant a strong reaction and some do not. I don't think this one did, and I certainly don't think the Miami game (one of the three best teams in the MAC, on the road, lost by three). If you feel like we "failed" because we lost these games, then I would think your only definition of success is to go 18-0 in the MAC. I hope we can some day, but we are not there yet. Do I think we are capable of winning the MAC tournament? Yes. Do I think we are the best team in the MAC (assuming everyone plays at their highest level)? Possibly. At this point my vote would have to go to Can't. Do I think it's such a given that no MAC team can beat us - we can only beat ourselves? No. I don't mean I'm satisfied with double-digit losses to Buffalo, but these losses just don't scare me into thinking we're gonna choke in the tournament and it sounds like KD feels the same way. I don't think we "failed" and I know we can't go 18-0, but I do think that the losses on the road to Buffalo and Miami deserve a stronger rection from KD than they got. Like I said, Buffalo had a fantastic game, and Miami is a good team, but our performance in both those games was not what this team is capable of doing, and KD should have said so. I don't know what he said to the team in private, but his public comments did not thrill me.This is a good team ... not a great team ... but better than almost all in the MAC. The way Can't is playing now will make Saturday a tough game and "lighting a little fire" under this team wouldn't hurt.
Zips Win!
I didn't get a chance to hear KD's comments as I was enroute back to Summit County from Buffalo. Wednesday's game was pretty ugly and I too am comcerned over our "lack of momemtum" heading into the tourney. There is no shame in losing 4 MAC regular season games...atleast we battled in the Can't, OU and Miami games. However we were beat up pretty good last night. UB out hussled us and out muscled us all evening. The offense was stagnant, to say the least...The 3 pointers kept us in the game in the first half and we had difficulty getting off shots all day. (I understand it's nearly impossible for us win at UB...I'm 0-3 in trips to Buffalo. The games seem to be getting uglier.) Early on we got off some nice mid-range shots, we just didn't hit them. Then, Rome picked up two early fouls and he seemed to give up for the half. The ball movement was horrible...Dru dribbling and 4 guys standing around....The final shot of the first half proved once again that Dru will be the go to guy on a last second shot. He dribbled for 33 seconds and heaved up a horrible shot at the buzzer. There was absolutely no player movement on that play.Rome seemed a little more into the game at the start of the second half.....soon the defenses collapsed on him and the 6-point deficit went to 13. Also, way too much complaining towards the officials, especially by Dials. If you get knocked down, get up and elbow back......For a game that we dearly needed scoring, Peterson sitting on the bench continues to be puzzling. Why he doesn't play the 3 and Rome the 4 at the same time may come back to bite us.
