New commit? Stephen Ericksen

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen this anywhere, so maybe somebody can verify this. But I was told today that Carrollton High School center Stephen Ericksen has committed to Akron. He is listed at 6-4, 265.

Here's what I pulled up on him:

Trying to break down highlights of a center is way beyond my expertise. But he gets the ball to the QB quick and accurately on the shotgun snaps, and he seems to do a good job of engaging his defender. Also looks to be a legit 6-4, 265.

His Rivals profile shows an Ohio offer, but no mention of Akron.

He was also a Canton Repository's player of the week last year ... in basketball. So, he must be a good athlete.

If he did indeed commit, congrats to him. From what I can tell, he seems like he would be a solid pickup.

Stephen is the nephew of former Ohio State, Minnesota Viking and Indianapolis Colt center Kirk Lowdermilk and the cousin of current Iowa Hawkeye Johnny Lowdermilk.

Very agile for a big kid and once he gets in a serious weight program, he will be a beast. He more than held his own against former Marlington and Michigan State player Zach Higgins last year.

A couple years down the road, Stephen will look a steal for the Zips.

The conference that Carrollton is in, the Northeastern Buckeye Conference, has some great offensive linemen...I came name 3-4 offensive linemen at West Branch that will be playing college football at the next level at a DII school at the very least.

There's a kid at West Branch who will be a sophomore offensive lineman that's 6'4, 290 right now...

Carrollton is 3-0 on the season thus far. I have a friend whose son plays on the Mapleton team they beat in week one who told me "their center was a beast". Hopefully Stephen pans out for the Zips. I'm thinking it will be a huge adjustment for him to play against similarly talented players. I can't speak for any of the other teams Carrollton has faced this year, but Mapleton, although 2-1 on the year having beat Buckeye Central and Rittman only has 18 kids on their roster. Keeping my fingers crossed!

This is one area that I can talk forever on and give you scouting reports on almost every player in this particular high school football conference. My alma mater actually plays at Carrollton this friday night, and I'm going to see it.

The conference is known for linemen. Just for a run through, here's the schools in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference: Alliance, Canton South, Carrollton, Louisville, Alliance Marlington, Minerva, Salem, and West Branch. A lot of these schools normally have big offensive lines, and this year is no exception. If I had a way to get a hold of Coach Bowden or Coach Arrington, I would tell them this conference is a pipeline for offensive linemen.

Last year, Marlington had an Offensive lineman by the name of Zach Higgins, who is now a freshman at Michigan State. Alden Hill, a running back at Marlington, is a freshman at Tennessee. And for the trifecta, Marlington has a senior running back named Dymonte Thomas who is going to Michigan. West Branch, 2 years ago had a lineman named Brandon Ferguson, who had several MAC offers, and decided to go to Youngstown State instead.

A lot of "meat and potatoes" in this conference, and some great skill talent as well. I'm excited to see my alma mater this friday with our 295 pound average on the line against a very good Carrollton offense....

Once again, I rambled on too much because I just love watching this high school football conference. During Ianello era, I would save my money to go to as many of these conference games as possible, since they were much more entertaining. It's changed, but I still love me some high school football :D

Just to add on to Keener's points of Carrollton this year, they've scored 50, 55, 14, and 42 so far this season for a 4-0 mark. The only downside to this amount of points, is they're doing it basically on the ground. Not a passing first team, but I think their center is good enough that he will be find in Bowden's offense.

Their rushing yards in a game have been this in order: 270, 454, 187, 320

Their passing yards in a game have been this in order: 158, 71, 16, 128

Guess we won't know for sure til he gets here, but he certainly fits the mold for what we need on the line...

Thank you for the info, mes102. I feel a lot more confident now. The fact that they played Mapleton threw a scare into me, I guess.

It does scare me too. I have no idea how good this Carrollton team really is, even with their good linemen. They've played no one close to the talent level they'll see this friday. Right now we may not know, but by week 10, we may know by then how good these linemen really are with the great defenses in the league of Marlington and Louisville....
