A few months ago he was still undecided about whether to play football or basketball in college according to this article.

He is a big time point guard recruit. I know that he had an offer from Creighton. I think he may have had one from WVU as well. Maybe he plans on playing both sports??

HERE is the updated Time-Online article that mentions why he chose football over hoops. I can't disagree with his logic.

“They throw the ball something like 50 times a game,” Cottrill said. “For a wide receiver, that’s as close to Christmas as it gets.

Before choosing Akron, Cottrill had also received a scholarship offer from Temple for football.

Cottrill also has an offer on the table for basketball from Creighton and would have probably received more hoops offers during his senior year.

“I love basketball,” he said. “But football gives me a better chance to keep playing after college.”

Cottrill’s verbal commitment won’ become binding until he signs his national letter-of-intent. He can do that during the NCAA‘s early signing period in November.

What the heck is going on at WMU? When I was checking this kid on 247, I looked at MAC ranking and they already have 13 3 stars? I know it's way early and this stuff fluctuates like crazy, but that's pretty good.

Total commits for 2014 - 21.

Currently rated as 43rd best class in the nation.

I guess "Row the Boat" has struck a chord with recruits.

WMU also has struck a chord with coaches.

Brian Callahan is the assistant coach/offensive line, and Luke Getsy has been hired as an assistant coach/wide receivers.

Cottrill's status after high school also is up in the air. In the summer, he made a verbal commitment to Akron for football, although he said he would still wait to see what would happen in basketball recruiting. Creighton had offered him a scholarship last spring for basketball and a few other Division I colleges were showing interest.

But Biega said Cottrill has backed out of the verbal commitment to Akron for football. Cottrill likely will attend a prep school or a junior college.
