Louisville landingWhile Lolla and Akron had agreed in principle in November to a contract extension, he was not scheduled to actually sign the contract until March of 2006. That window allowed senior associate athletics director Julie Hermann to contact Lolla the Thursday before the College Cup, and he visited the campus that Sunday and Monday, then made his decision on Tuesday.Matt Wallerstedt Named to Ron Prince's staff on Dec. 27, 2005, Wallerstedt comes to K-State following a successful two-year run at Akron, where he served as the Zips associate head coach, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.During his stay at Akron, Wallerstedt helped usher forth a stunning turnaround that saw the Zips win their first Mid-American Conference championship and earn their first bowl berth (the 2005 Motor City Bowl) in just his second season with the program.During 2005, Wallerstedt saw two of his players earn All-MAC honors as linebackers Brion Stokes and Jay Rohr were named to the league's second team and honorable mention squads, respectively. Wallerstedt also helped completely transform the Zips' defense. The unit finished the 2005 regular season ranked first in the MAC in total defense. Akron also made a 75-spot improvement on the NCAA's total defense chart, improving from No. 98 in 2004 to No. 23 in 2005.Shaka Smart Named Clemson Assistant Coach Shaka Smart, most recently the associate head coach at Akron the last three seasons, has been named an assistant basketball coach at Clemson. Tiger Head Coach Oliver Purnell made the announcement Wednesday. Smart replaces Kevin Nickelberry, who resigned earlier this month to become the head coach at Hampton University. Badgers name Wright assistant coach Julie Wright, previously the head softball coach at Akron for two seasons, has been hired as an assistant UW softball coach, head coach Chandelle Schulte announced. The Zips finished with a 26-25 record this spring, qualifying for the Mid-American Conference tournament for the first time in four years. She also previously served as the top assistant at the University of Kansas. She played outfield and Pry new Tight End CoachUniversity of Illinois head football coach Ron Zook announced today the hiring of former Akron offensive coordinator Jim Pry to serve as offensive assistant and tight ends coach. Pry brings more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, including over 14 seasons as an offensive coordinator, to the Illini staff.Terrell Williams is in his first season as defensive line coachHe was named to the position Feb. 27, 2006. Williams came to the Boilermakers from Akron, where he coached the defensive line in 2004 and 2005. The Zips, who opened the 2005 season with a 49-24 loss at Purdue, went on to win the Mid-American Conference championship game over Northern Illinois 31-30 and played in the Motor City Bowl. The league championship and bowl appearance were both firsts in school history. Nose guard Kiki Gonzalez was named all-conference in 2005. who left his post in February to take an assistant coaching position at Purdue University.I may have missed somebody.........sorry
