Valpo Zip
I know that we all have great expectations for the team this year and i know that we all believe that we have chances to win the game (myself included)... But let's be honest, with the weather's condition, our chances are getting slimmer and slimmer. All what i am affraid of is to see negative and destructive post game comments. This is only the first game and it is against the big10 champions. So no matter what happens, I am not going to trash any of our players and i am not going to call for firing anyone...Once again, I am not saying that this game is not going to be good... i am just saying "if things go wrong". Buckzip
I just want us to be competitive and look respectful.I don't want a blowout.I will be unhappy if we don't beat NCSU though. I want a win against a BSC conference team. I also want a win against Cincy. If we can beat NCSU, Cincy, along with doing well with the rest of our schedule, this will be a good season, and will help recruiting for more good seasons. ZachTheZip
Final 34-16. Our O-line was pretty bad in the first half. Stupid penalties and 5 allowed sacks.
you am i
the people who took akron at 17 and-a-half are probably pretty ticked-off about that missed extra point.
ZachTheZip
Still, it is certainly an improvement over the last two times we played them.
zipsbandman
My thoughts........Hands down the defense deserves all the props today. The score may not reflect their efforts, but did they make some impressive stops and kept this from getting out of control early. In a conference not known for defensive prowess, we gotta be happy about this group.Special teams will be a liability this year. There is a lot of youth and it showed today. We have to be patient with them.I was not really impressed with the offense today. I had high hopes for them, but what I saw was failure to capitalize on Penn State errors that could have really turned the game around. For the experience, the oline could have done a better job protecting the qb. We have a promising group of receivers, but there is youth there too. Too many dropped balls. Getsy also missed on some. Penn State really kept our running game in check most of the game. We need to be able to run the ball.In all, good effort today, and no one in the MAC has been able to stop the Big Ten yet so we're all right so far? Well, it could be worse. We could be Can't fans. zff
My 2 Cents.......The zips played hard but got off to a slow start. Too many mental mistakes penalties and missed assignments.O-Line looked bad. Was it the bad weather or are they really that solw and unathletic. To many dropped balls but the weather was a factor.I know he had some mistakes in the first half but Andre Jones is the real deal and WILL be a force this year. He made some awesome plays in the second half.David Harvey looked very good too. He just needs some experience and knock some rust off.Nate Robinson turned in a good game. I hope this gives him the spark he needs. If he continues to work he will be unblockable. For the fans it was a good day. But the coaches and players need to be pissed off. They play good but could have play a lot better and could have been in this game at the end.More ot come after I watch the game again
ZachTheZip
The O-line was bad because of three reasons, I think. 1. The Weather2. Penn State's D-line is very talented3. The crowdSpecial Teams looked pretty good. I like our punter, but I was dissapointed that Igor Iveljic was not our kicker. That said, I think that if we work on our problems this week, we can beat NC State pretty easily.. fear the brown roo
enough about the weather. it wasn't a monsoon and penn state played in the same conditions. we had too many mental mistakes to be able to even think about beating that team. we needed to play perfectly and played far from it. no doubt in my mind there will be adjustments next week and we'll play much better. i'm not looking for anyone to be fired. i think the team is too well coached to have that many mental mistakes and no doubt these will be corrected this week. the zips played much better than previous years but far from their potential today, which at the same time dissapoints me and encourages me. there will be many better days this year. UADavid
"please everyone, no matter what happens, do not come here after the game and trash playersI didn't take the pledge. I don't know why crouch was removed for sure, but he was awful. He can't or won't move his feet. For all those who say it's one game, I've been watching him throughout his Akron career and he has gotten worse each year. I don't see the preseason accolades for him and if he's not missing a block, he's being flagged for__________ (fill in the blank). Kemme did a nice job at left tackle and we can use Schepp and some more of our stud linemen from last years class to fill out the line. The defense did a nice job considering the short field Penn St. had to work with throughout the game. The secondary needs to tighten up their drops and we need a little more discipline in staying in position both on d and special teams. The success of the team is dependent on them not hurting themselves with costly penalties, turnovers, and poor play. I don't think they played like a veteran team today. I'm sure they'll get after it in practice and I hope they look better at NC St.
Zipsrifle
Overall, I'm disappointed with the outcome. We did not seem as prepared as we were for last seasons for the opener at Purdue. I expected us to have the PSU fans agitated at least a few times today, but the game was just a joke for them. The early strike really disappointed me. Going into the game, I was expecting our experience to at least keep us playing on the same level with PSU's inexperienced talent. That was not the case. As someone else mentioned, our DB were giving huge cusions. TURN AROUND AND FIND THE BALL! Maybe later in the game we were giving huge cushions because of what happened early. I was also having flushbacks to the Lee Owens Era where we would hit people, but not wrap up. If we could actually wrap people up, we would have made a lot more stops. On the up side, I was VERY impressed with Andre Jones. That guy is going to be BIG! Our D is just going to get better and better. On Offense, Getsy only had a few times where he could sit in the pocket and wansn't rushed. I think the biggest disappointment was how easy it was for PSU to get to Getsy or Kennedy. I thought our experience would have leveled the playing field in this area, but apparently not. Kennedy did a HELL of a job. I had a lot of reservations about him filling in for Biggs, but he did an excellent job. He's not quick enough around the end, but he keeps bouncing for a hole and gets what he can. I was VERY HAPPY to see Getsy actually find Kasparek over the middle. Jabari IMO had streaks of greatness. I've never really been that impressed with him, but he showed up for about 5 minutes today and played great. This guy could be huge if he can put on that type of performance for an entire game. I was also disappointed with how we packed it in at the end of the 2nd Q. I would prefer that we kept on fighing till time was out. For all the talk I see on this page about jumping from the MAC to bigger, better confrence, we didn't show it today. We needed to capitalize with every opportunity we had. We were the MAC's last hope of putting up a respectible fight against a top team this weekend and as the defending MAC champs, we didn't deliver. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for anyones job, we did much better this time in Happy Valley than the previous two trips, but this weekend the MAC only encouraged BCS Schools to schedule us early in the season. To end on an up note (which I typically try to do), one thing I noticed as I referenced the Depth Chart througout the game was that there were a LOT of people involved that weren't on the 2-deep. This really gets me excited for the future. If we're putting in guys in such a big game that aren't on the 2-deep, when we're still in the game, JD must have confidence in them and they are also getting big game experience. My offensive game ball goes to Kennedy, my defensive game ball goes to Andre Jones. I hope the team learns a lot from this game, and we kick NC State's @$$ next week. GO ZIPS! Valpo Zip
well believe it or not, i am very satisfied with the performance and i believe that we are up to a great and memorable season... I know that we didn't play a perfect game and i know that we can always improve but i am happy and here is why:-Other than Tim Crouch and Jabari Arthur, all the players showed decent effort and talent. And that is 2 out of (30?) players being below the expectations... -A little more work can be done to improve the passing deffense now the positives:-great offensive play calling-Kemme(sp?) is a beast !-Alleman costed us a lot on the penalties but other than that, great game.-Harvey is living up to the hype.-run deffense... oh my god ! who in the mac would be able to run against this defense.-and the best thing of all: Dennis Kennedy, i am telling you that i can't wait to see him ripping the MAC deffenses apart.-TE position is a lock with KAZ and poindexter.-QB is solid, especially when playing against easier Def. Linemen.Put all that together with less penalties in the coming games, and we have good chances to win all the coming games. We probably won't win all of them but we have good chances.
