GP1 Posted September 10, 2006 Report Posted September 10, 2006 I had to park quite a distance from the stadium yesterday so I had a chance to spend a lot of time walking next to the funeral procession that others would call a post game traffic jam. I've never heard such silence coming from the 5,000 cars sitting in traffic. The only sound was the sound of bitching coming out of the post game radio show.Anyhow, State fans are plenty pissed off at Chuck Amato, and they should be because the team is worse now than when he took over as coach. Anyhow, I have a sneaky feeling that JD pulled the hammer back on the gun that is going to end the Amato era in Raleigh. The trigger remains to be pulled and someone else is going to have to do that, but JD did pull the trigger back.Any thoughts? Quote
fear the brown roo Posted September 10, 2006 Report Posted September 10, 2006 JD did to amato what Can't state did to owens in 2003 Quote
Lone Zip in Col Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 I'm not sure that I agree. The Zips are a better team than NC State and I don't believe that I saw one prediction on this board pre-game that had NCS winning. For one reason or the other NCS fans seem to believe their team is better than what it is. They have been wanting to get rid of Amato for some time now. Maybe JD will put his firing in motion. However, they were never any good before him and they simply do not have a strong winning football tradition. He may be a victim of his earlier success during the P. Rivers era.I'm glad to see the general reaction to this victory. If it generates more interest in the program then I'm all for it. For me, when I expected the team to beat NCS, I'm not very excited when they perform to expectations. Next week I believe the team will be facing a much better opponent in CMU than NCS. Go Zips. UA Fan Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 some ncst fans seem to think B. Cowher could replace Amato. does anyone know what the connection is? Is B.C. an alum or something? I guess he already owns a home in Raleigh...?If they fire Amato and do a comprehensive national search, JD's name would have to be on the list. It would put him in the BCS club and he would be one step away from the top echelon, not unlike an Urban Meyer BG-->Utah-->Florida career path. Quote
tbell ncsu Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 and they should be because the team is worse now than when he took over as coach.that confirms it. you REALLY don't know what you're talking about. i can't believe you actually said that.as for cowher, he was a star linebacker here back in the late 70's. chuck amato (also an alum, and star linebacker and heralded wrestler) was the linebackers coach at the time, under head coach bo rein. cowher's wife played basketball here as well. bill cowher still holds the nc state single game tackles record with 22 tackles (on two occasions), and also the season total with 195 tackles.he has always said he would move back to raleigh, and his wife wants to as well. they want to raise their younger daughters here. cowher has also said he would help the program out however he can, as long as he wasn't encroaching. he's kept up a good, close relationship with the university.i really don't think he'll take the head coaching job, or even a coordinator position if offered. cowher has made it pretty clear that when he retires, that's exactly what he plans on doing - being retired. at best, i can only imagine cowher being a consultant of sorts. you never really know with people who love something so much though. My guess is that Chuck would grade out with the fans at about a D+ after the first and second games of the season. The team seems to be trending downward. The fans were mad as heck on the radio after the game Saturday and the team isn't very good. Chuck is in trouble. Quote
tbell ncsu Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 of the thirty or so responses on that blog, i saw one person grade amato as being worse than our previous coach. and of course the fans were mad after the game. we had just lost, and at home too. as for a grading, d+ would be fair for how we've started the season. overall, i would give chuck amato a b-. we've gone bowling 5 of his 6 seasons here. he's put something like 22 players into the nfl while at state. the fanbase is fired up about football, something none of our other coaches have been able to do. you can say that amato's been able to brainwash the fanbase into believe that we're a football school too, and not just a basketball school. the only other time our national profile in football was this high might have been when lou holtz coached here (better than .700 record; wins over bigtime powerhouse programs at the time; a #3 finish).just to shed some light for you; going in reverse:mike o'cain - couldn't beat our rivals, especially carolina. he did beat florida state though. he also only managed a .500 overall record. o'cain was fired and became the offensive coordinator for clemson, and is now at va tech.dick sheriden - wonderful coach. if he had the financial support that amato has now, and the $160 million or so in stadium upgrads, and the fervor of the fanbase... man.tom reed - 3 season in the mid-80's. 3-8 finish in each of those. 'nuff said. Quote
