Akron Athletics To Launch Frye's Heisman Web Site

www.Frye2004.com, which is dedicated to the Zips' quarterback, will be unveiled tomorrow.

July 14, 2004

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron will officially launch a new web site Thursday afternoon dedicated to the exploits of senior quarterback Charlie Frye (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS), the first-ever Heisman Trophy candidate in school history.

Akron fans and media are encouraged to visit www.Frye2004.com throughout the 2004 season for the latest press releases, statistics and fun facts about the record-setting signal-caller. The web site will take a behind-the-scenes look at Frye in his final season in blue and gold.

"It's exciting to be mentioned for such a prestigious award," Frye said of the Heisman Trophy. "We've had some great quarterbacks come through this league and it's nice to be included in that group."

"However, the most important thing for me this season is team success. We have a lot of seniors (on the team), guys I came in with, and we want to go out on a winning note."

The 6-foot-4, 228-pounder is coming off the best season in Akron history, and one of the best on Mid-American Conference record. He set the UA single-season passing yards record with 3,549, and eclipsed the school mark for career passing yards (8,426) before the end of his junior year. Both of those marks rank eighth all-time in MAC history. Frye ended the 2003 campaign in possession of 49 school records.

Frye, who was named to the watch list for the 2004 Davey O'Brien Award earlier this week, is among the top returning signal-callers in the nation. His 319.8 yards of total offense in 2003 ranks No. 1 nationally among returning players, while his pass efficiency rating of 148.6 is seventh among returning quarterbacks.

Frye is on pace to break Byron Leftwich's conference records for career passing yards and total offense. He needs 3,478 passing yards and 3,224 yards of total offense in 2004 to snap the former Marshall quarterback's records.

Frye and the Zips open preseason practice on Aug. 11 in preparation for the 2004 season opener on Sept. 4 at Penn State.

It's a shame that the heisman doesn't recognize the best player in the nation. It just recognizes the best player on the best team in the nation. It's all about keeping the little man down. :wall:

BTW, good luck to Chuck!

Charlie is a good QB, but I don't think he is the best player in the nation.

A little homerism maybe?

It's not hte best player on the best team, it's the best player from a top 20 team.

No MAC player will win the Heisman

I was just generalizing. I don't think Frye will be the best in the nation, but even if he was he wouldn't win it. That's my point. I am definitely NOT a zips fan so don't mistake that. I just wanted to rant about the heisman. And when I said best team I had best italicized to mean what you're saying.

who is a better player then ? name one? then put him on the zips team last year ,and see if they could do any better. i doubt it. if you put frye on osu with their d last year, i think they go undefeated in the regular season. just looking at it from another perspective.

Speaking of marketing, kudos to the marketing team for the advertisements on the radio. I must have heard zips advertisements on three different FM radio stations. Hopefully, we can bring in a big crowd for the ESPN game. Who ever thought they would be coming to the Rubber Bowl? I can't wait for football season. Things are changing at Akron U.
