geno
Scuttlebutt among those supposedly in the know at the Buffalo game stated that if Akron gets 6 wins, meaning winning one of the next two games they will get an invite to the new bowl game in Toronto. Supposedly the Toronto people are interested in Akron due to the close proximity and how well they traveled to Detroit.
GP1
If any of you think we may go to Toronto and you would go, you MUST get your passport now!!!!!! My company sent around a notice about the changes in border security and the need for a passport after January 1.Google "United States State Department" and it will direct you to a location near you to obtain a passport. There is one right by UofA if you live in Akron. If you wait until the last minute, you may not get one in time.

I thought I read that you needed one traveling by January 1st, 2007 if you're going by air, and then in January 2008 it becomes by car as well....or something like that. Rockhopper Wallaroo
taken from an ad for foreign vacations I saw in USA Today On January 8,2007 the US Dept of State will require US citizens (including children) traveling by air to present a valid passport for travel and re-entry into the United States. akronad
Below is the information I received from Frommers.comSince September 11, 2001, documentation rules for travelers have been getting more stringent; almost everywhere you go, it's becoming necessary to carry your passport or other accepted proof of citizenship. At this rate, it's probably going to be nearly impossible to travel without a passport soon, regardless of where you're going, so now is the time to get one. Although you may not think you need one if you only travel within North America, that's about to change. This year, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 was amended, and now there are new requirements under the newly created Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. There are two phases. For phase one, as of January 8, 2007, all persons, including United States citizens, who are entering or re-entering the U.S. and traveling by air between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central, and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda, will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner document. The date was changed in August from January 1 in order to accommodate holiday travel, according to the office of the spokesman for Department of State (www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2006/70299.htm). Right now, public comment is being sought at the federal rulemaking portal (www.regulations.gov) until December 18 for phase two's initiative, which stipulates that as early as January 1, 2008, all persons traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries) may be required to present a valid passport or other documents "as determined by Homeland Security." These government agencies are considering the implementation of a wallet-sized Passport Card (also referred to as the PASS card), a limited use passport card to be used for travel only by land or by sea (including ferries but not cruise ships) for travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Central and South America. According to a statement issued by the State Department, the PASS card was designed "to facilitate the frequent travel of those living in U.S. land border communities and those traveling on commercial maritime vessels." T.O Zipfan
You only need your passport if you will be flying into the US from Canada starting January 2008. Anybody who is making the road trip up here will only have to bring their birth certificate or dirvers license as has always been the case. Its a 5 hour drive, I've done the trip already 3 times this season...if the Zips end up getting an invite, I'm more than happy to provide any intel on locations to stay, park, eat or have fun. Ballingirl
you have to have birth certificate AND ID, correct? Because a drivers license alone doesn't prove citizenship.
T.O Zipfan
I cross all the time with my canadian driver's licence without a birth certificate so I don't think its necessary...my understanding is that the only changes are for incoming air travellers into the US from Canada, although the license does not prove citizenship, it does prove residency. Ballingirl
Canadian drivers license is different.....misunderstood.....if you are a U.S. citizen, you have to have your birth cert and ID. They give problems if you don't have Birth cert.
KNCLZip
travel.state.gov linkAs early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

I've got mine, but if I remember correctly it took six weeks, including several appointments with the Immigration/Passport Office. There should be one in the Akron Post Office or the Federal Building, I got mine in the Main Canton Post Office. I think the new fee is somewhere betwwen $75-80. It's a pain, but I think it will be invaluable down the road.
FearTheRoo
Akron Main Post Office is where I got mine. Be prepared to write TWO checks for the total payment. It can take up to 6 months to get it, but mine took 6 weeks. Better to have it now than to get it when everyone else it trying to get theirs. Also, you need to have two color photos of yourself. Not sure on size requirements, but any Kinkos and other similar places will do the photo for you. Bring it to the PO when you go to register. I didn't have to make any further trips other than the initial one to the PO. Passport came in the mail to my home. It is good for 10 years.
