Ryno aka Menace
If you would have told me at the pre-season of this year that this football team would end up 6 and 6 possible, or more likely 5 and 7. I would have laughed in your face. I would have pointed out how we have a verteran line, experienced QB and a great Defense. Not to mention Defending MAC champs, the is no place to go but up for this team and university. I thought the turning point for this team would have been the NC State win. But now outsiders looking in are gonna say that was a fluke!! This team has got to be the most frustrating team to watch EVER!!! It is one thing to not expect anything and lose, it is another to play a close game and lose, BUT to constantly have penalties, dropped balls bad passes, and an ass whipping by Can't is just too damn much to swallow.I still can't believe this is how a season with such promise is going to end. Well at least two things are for sure. We all can kill that noise about JD leaving early, and Getsy will not even get a try-out for the NFL. liljc
If you'd have told me a guy can recover an onside kick in full view of God, fans and tv and then not be given the ball I wouldn't have believed it! The MAC should be embarrassed by the officiating during last night's game. I can't believe JD didn't go freaking crazy after they screwed him on the onside kick. How about the personal foul on Stokes defending an option play? Anyone else see the "no-call" when Jabari got mauled on the sideline right in front of the referee? ZipAnalyst
The jury is still out on JD. What happens next year will be a better measure. His system will have been in place for a number of years and his first recruiting class will be seniors. I am not optimistic that he has what it takes to get Akron to premier status in the MAC let alone "to the next level" because I think he undermines his own ability to command the attention and respect of the players. Most ZipNationeers think JD is a good recruiter. I agree. On paper his recruits appear to be of high quality. But when one digs deeper there may be an explanation as to why he is not getting as much out of his recruits as perhaps he should. As one example. I am of the opinion that JD brought Getsy in having promised him starting quarterback status in the recruiting process. That he would do something like this, astonishes me. Given that he was such a huge success in the entrepreneurial world, he certainly knows better. My question is how many other "prized recruits" do we have that think they do not have to compete? It is now clear to many of us that we should have used this year to bring on one of our freshmen at quarterback. I would have done it as early as post-Central Michigan game. Getsy's experience was not a positive, it has been and continues to be a negative. He keeps on making the same mistakes which end up costing us games. JD has no choice but to play him because I believe he would never have come to Akron except for assurances that he would be the starting quarterback for two full years. One of the things that "good recruiter" head coaches of programs trying to ratchet up quality do, is give "guarantees" (never admitted to) to recruits they could not otherwise get to their school - just to get that "blue chipper." Even if the player is a high caliber player, if he knows he doesn't have to compete - it is predictable he will not be challenged to excellence.Getting back to my example of Getsy: If I am right, JD could not go back on his word to Getsy because the unreliability of his word would get out and future "primiers" would not buy into the promise and therefore would not come to Akron.I suspect that this may be the genius behind JD's recruiting. In the end it will not be genius because these folks feel "entitled." They take on "prima donna" attitudes that not even the coach who recruited them can harness and channel into productive growth. The hope I have for JD, if I am on to something about his recruiting methods, is that he will learn how utterly counterproductive such methods are to his own success. johnnyzip84
I agree there were a few bad calls that went against the Zips, but I don't think it was enough to blame on the loss. If you can't run the ball or defend the run, you're not going to win many games. That's even if your special teams don't screw things up. Add that into the equation, and you won't win ANY.What in the world happened to the team that was pretty effective in both rushing and rush defense against PSU and NC St? Ever since the CMU "gift", the Zips have had the wind taken out of their sails it seems. If you think about it, aside from the CMU game, the Zips really weren't even competetive in all of our MAC road contests. That's very disheartening heading into the off season. RACER
i dont agree about jd promising getsy playing time.getsy led us to the mac championship last; so you bench him this year for the whole season?who would lyou ike him to put in? do you honestly think if we had a better qb he would sit on the bench. don't you think some of players would be complaining about it to. i seriously doubt that. as for now hopefully he will let some of the other qb gets some pt for next year now that we are out of it. RACER
i think the season got out of hand after we beat nc state.everyone started talking crazy things like 10-2 seasons. we barely won our divsion last year, and won the mac championship on the last play. that's not to say we did not win it ,but we were hardly a mac powerhouse last year.our defense got rolled the last two games of 2005.i think expectations for this team got way out of hand while the other teams like Can't,and ou got better.for me this season is going about what a thought at the start of the year. i thought 7-5.we could still be six and six.im not happy with that ,but i don't think this team was that good to begin with in 2006.i think everyone thought we were alott better than we really were to start off the season. AZipsCrazy
To be honest I am also in disbelief... I really thought this team was better than this. This season has been up and down (definitely with more downs). IMO this team needs to adjust it's strategy offensively, when I watch the games it seems like the only time our offense gets rolling is when we are running the two-minute drill. Which tells me one thing they are not playing to their strengths, they need to take notes from the way cryAMI ran their offense when the had Roethlisberger (Establish the pass to open up the run). Luke is not a good enough QB to be on point when he's not throwing every down, so they needed to come out gunning and spread the defense out... then break the defense with the run. Does anyone else agree that the only time this offense seems like it moves is when we are in the two-minute drill???Whatever either way this season is over and I am PISSED!!! ZipAlumn
DESIRE ... I did not see that in the offense last night. DESIRE ... I saw it in the defense, but the 3-3-5 configuration put McRae into the our backfield once he got past the line of scrimmage. The 3-3-5 is supposed to handle the passing game that the MAC quarterbacks were going to throw at the Zips this year. Guess what, most of our losses came because teams ran on us, especially their QB's.DESIRE ... I don't mind Jabari Arthur dropping a pass now and then. What I do mind is that all too often he makes very little effort to catch a pass. And last night when that snap went past Stec he made as much effort to get to it as George Bush does raising the minimun wage.DESIRE ... I also didn't see to much of it on the sidelines during the game. The players and the coaches all looked like they would rather e someplace else. Lee Adams
went all the way to athens to see that! ZIPANALYST is right on... been to every home game + Can't and last night... the recurring theme for the year is the inabaility of BROOKHART and his staff to prepare the team to play quality opponents...after the first scripted drive was again aborted by a Getsy turnover... the COACHES had NO response... on either side of the ball...once Solich new he could jam it up the D's you know what...he did...no response from the akron sideline...Solich toyed with Brookhart the rest of the night...cause he could..its obvious there is some talent on this team...Harvey still has no hands though and Kennedy will never run inside consistently... but BROOKHART and his staff have been unable to put them in the best position to win games...that has not changed all year...thats one of those FATAL flaws that gets coaches fired...plenty of talent few wins..i also agree that there seem to be some undercurrents with this team...lack of discipline...too much individual crap on the field... who is sailing the ship?!!next Friday could get REAL ugly, cause western mich. will be playing for a BOWL...seems so long ago, doesn't it????akronoldtimer
zipsbandman
one more season like this and we'll be regretting that Brookhart signed the extension. Pure garbage

johnnyzip84
One of the worst thoughts for me is the sinking feeling that, over time, we will all realize that the Zips REALLY missed a golden opportunity in 2006 for two big reasons. Both BGSU and Miami were down this year! If MAC FB history is any kind of barometer of future success, we all know that they both will be back in much better form, probably very soon. Hopefully we'll see a few key coaching changes with the assistants after this season.
