ZachTheZip
I am attempting to trace the athletic department's steps back to the beginning of Mack Rhoades time in office to determine what went wrong. Arguably, it could have been when those out-of-towners were hired to "fix" the marketing department after our most successful season ever in Zips athletics. Should we have seen some warning signs that would have told us that the athletic department wants to control everything we do and then blame it on the fans when their plan doesn't work? Here is a list of major blunders commited by the department so far. I shudder to think of what might come next.1.) Requiring a $500 "donation to park near the Rubber Bowl, while eliminating the old tailgate area.2.) Moving the student section for football to the visiting side and sticking it behind a lightpole.3.) Absolutely ZERO visible marketing or advertising other than that one radio commercial.4.) Failure to schedule many good games early in the season to drum up support for both football and mens basketball5.) Selling the basketball student section seats over winter break, even though a good 75% of students are still in the area.Almost all of these things could have been avoided with no problem. The blame ultimately falls on Mack Rhoades, although I hope it is not his fault. Leaders are often surrounded by yes-men who are afraid to tell their boss the truth. Hopefully we will be able to send him a message where his administration has failed.
skip-zip
Let me add a few more...The marketing that did exist was poor, on a number of different criteria (I've gotten into this in detail previously).Long-time football season ticket holders with good seats were told prior to this season that they will be moved to other areas next year because "they are not major donors to the Z-Fund". Bleacher Bum
Poor marketing??!! You guys don't know what you're talking about! That little "Fear the Roo" jingle at the end of the radio commercials really put butts in the seats!
zipspride101
I personally think the Athletics Marketing department is doing the best they can! They are still a relatively new group of people. I mean...we can't expect every year to be the exact same thing! In regards to the seats...don't worry about it! It is only over break! Once the MAC games come the AK-ROWDIES will be there in full force. The AK-ROWDIES will and must continue to support the athletics department 100% We, the students, are not here to boycot the games! We are here to GO AND ATTEND AND SUPPORT our zips!Marketing dept....you guys rock! We appreciate all you're doing. Some people just have to realize that things change. Every year is not the same! We have to all come out this Friday and show our support when the zips will totally destroy Nevada! So fear the roo!Stop the complaining!and goooooooooooooooooo ZIPS! redbarn26
seriously? you want us to support an athletic department that doesn't support us? if they can't sell out the lower reserved section, why should they take away the student seats? this whole thing would make more sense if we were actually selling out games and we needed seats, but we aren't. i also think that more than anything else, it is the gesture of taking the seats away then the action, because let's be honest, there are plenty of open seats. maybe be more courteous to the students that support you, because we give plenty to the administration, it's time they start giving us something. skip-zip
I shouldn't comment on that, but I will. Marketing has nothing to do with being "new". You either know what you are doing, or you don't. I know. I've been doing it for almost two decades. There's no excuse for misinterpreting a theme, or not communicating effectively with your target market. That's all Marketing 101. And my comments have nothing to do with my loyalty, or lack of loyalty to my alma mater.

If this is the best they can do then they need to quit and go find a new career. I don't care if they are relatively new. They are only relatively new to this area. Reading the profiles on the administration you got Mack from UTEP and Hunter is from Virginia, they better have had some experience before they were put in the position they are currently. How hard is it to advertise in the paper?? Not hard I am sure I mean if the owners of the strip clubs can figure it out I am pretty sure the highly regarded and sought after administration can do it!! ZachTheZip
If the new marketing guys are trying so hard, then why haven't we seen anything like, oh I don't know... results? Where are the advertisements? Where are the billboards and TV commercials that were everywhere last year? Did they cut funding so much that all we can afford is a "Fear the Roo" jingle that isn't all that fearful? Does the Athletic department have so little money that they must sell the student section for a measly $6,000 (if they are lucky)? Please, I know people are reading this who can answer me, so WHERE ARE THE ADVERTISEMENTS SO PEOPLE KNOW THAT ZIPS ATHLETICS EXIST?

zipper
Since we can now assume Marketing is reading this forum, let me give you guys a little insight: fans like consistency. Sure, you can change things....OVER TIME. The ship was headed in the right direction, and you guys came in and thought you knew better, or let your egos get in the way of continuing much of the marketing that was happening here. I've said this often to people, but please tell me Hunter contacted Waddel before he did anything, if for no other reason than to find out WHY the prior administration marketed like they did. That would have helped avoid some of these fiascos, imho.I HATE it when people come in new and try to reinvent the wheel when it's spinning around just fine, or at least better than it had been for several years. You guys were hired to continue the success of the administration, not create your own. You put your mark on the program when you have the ability AND the humility to continue the upward trajectory. Please rethink your approach.

Please rethink your approach. I truly hate the stupid mistakes that have been made when "marketing" the Athletic Department. Trying to make "big bucks" off of close in parking then backing off when there was an uproat. Not having printed home game tickets ready for sale at the START of the football season. Charging season ticket holders $5.00 for parking and everyone else $3.00. Not having enough "give away blankets" available at the home games. Trying to sell student section tickets during break. Selling cheap "give away" tickets to both football and basketball games after season ticket sales (this could and should have been advertised upfront). Finally my really pet peeve is gozips.com, I think that a high school kid could have designed it and maintained it better that what it has been.
