zip81
My son brought home a note from his teacher today that Monday, January 8 is OSU Day!!!Here's what the note said:"Students may wear their scarlet and gray to cheer on OUR Buckeyes."How nice. Instead of scarlet and gray, he will be wearing his Fear the Roo Zips gear! And that's HIS choice, not mine.
Ryno aka Menace
You should send a note to his teacher asking when is Akron day!!

skip-zip
Isn't it sickening how people just ASSUME that everyone in Ohio is a Buckeye fans?? Like it's the only D-1 school in the state? There's quite a few other D-1 schools in Ohio, and they all have plenty of fans. It makes me sick.Let me elaborate further....If you live in North Carolina, do people assume that you are a Tarheals fan? NO...of course not. You could like Duke, or NC State, or Wake Forest, etc. etc. Heck, I know more Michigan fans than Ohio State fans. I would never wear that red and gray crap. Ok, I'm done. sgm405
So don't have your kid wear OSU stuff? I'm sure that's all it is. I promise you that he'd probably see the same number of kids wearing OSU stuff that day as he would've had it not been named an official OSU day. Is this really THAT big of a deal? Schools do anything to get spirit up in a variety of ways. If only people were as fired up about the lack of funding in our school systems and the dysfunctional educational system, especially in Ohio, maybe things would change. FearTheRoo
Isn't it sickening how people just ASSUME that everyone in Ohio is a Buckeye fans?? ...but if they assumed you celebrated Christmas and wished you a Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holiday, it would be on the front page of the Beacon! As I stood in line to pick up my tickets tonight, I spoke to two different people wearing OSU gear to the game. All I said was "I expect that you will stop by the Sips Team Store to replace that OSU shirt with an Akron shirt before you leave tonight seeing as you are at an Akron game and not a Buckeyes game." Both gave me a very confused look.I was in Summit Mall recently and saw a kiosk selling automobile floor mats with college teams on them. Of course OSU was represented, but so was Ohio U and Miami (OH). I asked the guy working it if he had any Zips mats. When he replied 'no' I said, "You are in a mall in Akron, Ohio and you don't have any Akron mats to sell? And you have two of our rival schools for sale?" Again I got that dumb , confused look. Thank you Fear the roo for speaking what's on my mind.Just like you i noticed a similar place in the summit mall selling college sports gear. After looking for maybe 25 minutes and finding all D1 schools except akron, i headed towards the cashier and this converstion happened between us:me: How much are you selling those football jerseys for?him: $50me: great ! give me 10 zips' jerseys...him: zips ! do we have any zips jerseys?me: are you asking me ? this is your store...him: i don't think we have those...me: well forgive me for assuming that akron stores would have akron gear...him: we have antonio pittman's jersey, he grew up in copley, 3 miles from here.me: good for you, i am looking for zips stuff. Now those of you who know me, would know that i am a broke ass college student who could barely afford one of those jerseys... i just feel that those people should understand that they're loosing business by not having Zips stuff. Now that i think of it, i wonder what would i have done if he went in the back and brought me 10 jerseys and asked me for $500+tax... luckily, he didn't. I was told that several years ago the University "took over their own brand marketing" and that to purchase the right to sell Zips apparel was just to expensive versus the amount of sales. Huh????? Sounds good...I guess I read it the wrong way.As for the Zips gear in local places, I know the Champs in Chapel Hill mall has a bunch of Zips shirts. I believe Finish Line does as well. Maybe it's just Summit Mall...or maybe you're looking in the wrong places. Bottom line, whether anyone wants to accept it or not - there are far more OSU fans than Akron fans, even in Akron. And businesses sell what customers demand the most.
zip81
You are right sgm...I was at that store in Summit Mall. It is packed with everything OSU. The only thing non-OSU was a Can't State Cap. Now, I couldn't let that go bye...so I asked an employee, where's the Zips stuff? He could only smile. There were Akron window stickers up front by the register.Lets face it, if the Zips gear sold like Buckeye gear, we would be seeing Zip stores. I was able to get in early and buy MAC Championship T shirst on the MAC site before GoZips had them (and sold out).As Akron alums, we tell ourselves that, by definition, we're on the same level as Ohio State...but we know reality tells us different. That is why most people in Ohio are Ohio State fans..in addition...they win national championships.I find the best place to purchase Zips gear is either at the Bowl or JAR or online at GoZips.com.Personally, I don't get an inferiority complex over such things. You just have to accept reality. I like the MAC. I like the level of play. I like going to a bowl game. Last year was a lot of fun. In addition, it's a lot of fun knocking off a big boy like NC State. It's just like skip zip said above...it's the assumption that everyone has to be an Ohio State fan. It's not like professional sports where you can assume everyone in NE Ohio is a Browns fan...I went to Akron when we were Division II..searching for a conference and an identity. The program has come light years since then...now lets win some MAC Championships!!
Z.I.P.
I have asked several stores why they don't carry University of Akron apparel, and received a reply I don't understand and am not sure that I believe, but it was the same answer. I was told that several years ago the University "took over their own brand marketing" and that to purchase the right to sell Zips apparel was just to expensive versus the amount of sales. Huh?????I think this is absolute nonsense. "To purchase the rights to sell Zips apparel" is not a significant consideration to retailers. It consists of a small percentage of royalties on sales. Every NCAA school has virtually the same legal rights, which prevent copycat merchandise. I'll bet you OSU makes a higher % of sales than any MAC school (remember the war between Cowlumbus and OU over the rights to the letter "O"?), yet that doesn't prevent them from making something like $100M/year from merchandising. Now to get back to 81's original post: Imagine if a student actually took this "Buckeye Holiday" to its politically correct OSU-hating end, and arrived at school decked out in Florida orange! That might be playing with fire -- like the kid who was suspended for wearing a Pepsi T-shirt to school on Coke day. Happy politically correct holidays all!
