blueandgold
It's funny how both coaches previously coached in the MAC. Remember, Tressel was an assistant here before going to YSU. Now that I think about it, I believe Tressel was here right before we joined the MAC, but still.
skip-zip
Blue and Gold. He was an assistant coach in the MAC, but it wasn't at Akron. He was an assistant for a short time for Miami (OH), but his tenure in Akron was as a grad assistant way back in the 70's, about 15 years before we were in the MAC. zip81
Actually he was an assistant coach at Akron for three years under Coach Dennison after he was a grad assistant. From his bio on the OHio State Web site:"Following in his father's footsteps, Jim embarked upon his coaching career in the fall of 1975 as a graduate assistant at Akron. He remained at Akron through the 1978 season, serving in a full-time capacity his last three years as coach of the quarterbacks, receivers and running backs. While at Akron, he earned his master's degree."
Zip Watcher
Uhhh .. that means he was an assistant in the OVC .. not the MAC.
zip81
Not really. We were DII in 1975-78.We were independent, then joined the newly formed Mid-Continent Conference with Youngstown, N. Iowa, E. Illinois, W. Illinois and a couple others I forgot. It was considered the best DII conference in the nation when it was formed. You'll find its members now scattered. Most are now in the Gateway Conf. which is now IAA.We didn't join the OVC until 1981.But for sure, Tressel wasn't with us while we were in the MAC. blueandgold
All great points. I guess I should have said that both coaches coached with schools that are now part of the MAC. Anyway, it's too bad that the MAC hasn't grown into a bigger player in major college football. There have been so many great coaches at the current member schools over the years. If only they could've stayed and not gone to the big-name schools. Wishful thinking I guess.
skip-zip
Hey guys, thanks for all of the research.Since Zip81's timeline says that we joined the OVC starting in 1981, then the rest of the last 25 years should look like this...Div I-AA, Ohio Valley Conference, 1981-1985Div I-A, Independent, 1986-1991Div. 1-A, MAC, 1992 to PresentI'd like for everyone to keep the faith, and realize that the opportunity to play with the "big boys" is better than it has ever been, and will continue to get better. This is in large part due to the NCAA lowering the number of scholarship players a few years back. It simply keeps pushing more and more talented players further down the line to the "lesser" 1-A schools.Again, I'd love to see Akron be the next Boise State or Louisville. So many of the pieces necessary to accomplish this are in place (we're in a highly populated area, have a new fieldhouse and training facilities) and hopefully the remaining pieces that we mention all the time will fall into place soon as well (investment in a first-rate stadium, marketing dept., etc.).I'm glad someone created this website. It's one of the only opportunities most of us get to converse with fellow die hard fans, and brainstorm about our future as an athletic program, and how to improve it. Skip:Our last year in the OVC was 1987, so we would be an independent from 1988 to 1991, when we joined the MAC. I thought Gerry Faust was still our coach the last couple years in OVC.I know this is confusing as we have been in many conference affiliations as we have grown.I'd like to nail down when we were in the Mid Continent Conf.I'm thinking it was around 1978 or 79. I knew we were in it only a few years. That was our first conference since the old Ohio Conference days.D II Independent (from when we left Ohio Conf till we joined Mid Continent)D II Mid Continent Conf. late 70's to 1981D I-AA OVC 1981 to 1987D I-AA Independent 1988 to 1991D I-A MAC 1991 to present

skip-zip
Zip81....you're right!! I remember it clearly now since I was still a student at the time.Gerry Faust coached us for one more year as a I-AA in the OVC after he was hired, so we didn't start playing IA until the 1987 football season. johnnyzip84
Chris Petersen is the HC at Boise. Dan Hawkins is the coach at Colorado beginning with the 2006 season. I have two nominies who are not on your original list.Todd Graham (Rice) - This guy won in his 1st year at arguably the most challenging D-1 school.Steve Kragthorpe (Louisville) - Don't be surprised if he keeps them at the same level or better that Petrino has during his stay. Dr Z
Read the article. That is not my list. The article is from 2005.Point being, it is not easy picking the next "Urban Myer"I guess I assumed people would read the article and notice the date, my bad.
