skip-zip
As an older Zips fan, I have a few thoughts on all of this...First, I think it's perfectly acceptable for a Zips fan to hate Ohio State. We compete with them for athletes, students, fan support, and media coverage. People who are Pitt fans tend to hate Penn State, and Arkansas State fans hate Arkansas, etc., etc., for the same reasons. Rotsen...I do think it's ridiculous that the PA system was playing an OSU game for Akron fans. If they want to listen to the Suckeyes game, they should go listen to it in their own car. Akron's administration should never be "promoting" another school in any way. Secondly, people wear all kinds of sports gear. It's really pretty harmless. I've owned all kinds of hats and shirts, from many different schools. Sure, I wish when people come to an AKRON game that they wear their AKRON gear. But maybe several of them were not really Akron or Can't fans, but just wanted to go to a good game. Most of the people were there in our gear, to support our team, and that's fine with me. Zipgrad1990
Quit whining about the newspaper writing 500 words about OSU and only 450 about AkronI would be happy with 500 to 450 during the football season! At least most people aren't so OSU crazy for basketball. So the OSU coverage during the basketball season is not an issue at all for me.I have no problems with spectators wearing other school's gear. I do have a problem with an AKROWDY having any school other than Akron represented.
w00t
I can't stand when I hear stories about someone from Akron making a smart ass remark or ripping into someone wearing an OSU hat/shirt/whatever to the game. As others pointed out, maybe they're an OSU Alum relocated in Akron and want to become a fan...do you think doing this crap to them is going to make them want to be a part of the fan base?I wear a Rice Owls hat to every game. I like the fit and style of it, and I personally don't like any of the Zips hats that Lids offers. So I wear the Rice hat. Am I less of a fan? At this point in time, we don't need to do anything that pushes potential fans away, even if they are potential "bandwagon" fans, even if they do come to the game in another team's gear. As CK said, maybe give them one of the free shirts? Or instead of questioning and belittling them, say hey and tell them you hope to see them here for the rest of the year. OSU has fans everywhere in Ohio...they have been an enormous success for decades in athletics and have built a winning tradition. And anytime you have a winning tradition, you'll have a tons of fans...everywhere...even in Akron. A lot of you guys could save yourself a lot of gray hairs and frustration if you simply accept that as a reality. For the 1637123th time...STOP WORRYING ABOUT OHIO STATE!Quit whining about the newspaper writing 500 words about OSU and only 450 about Akron...quit complaining about OSU getting top bill on the late night news (which - by the way - Akron got last night)...and most of all, stop ripping into and questioning people who also like the Buckeyes. Doing that is only going to drive away current and potential Zips fans, not bring them in. And at this point in our athletic program, we need whatever fans we can bring in...no matter what hat or shirt they're wearing.Well said sgm!I'm sure we can find something blue amongst your leisure suits and tie-dyed hippie shirts!*Snort* I'm a lot of things, but I'm no hippie... I didn't go to Can't.Anyway, I wasn't talking about ME being decked out in OSU gear... I don't even own any. I had on a grey hooded sweatshirt and my "Fear The Roo" hat the other night. I went to an OSU football game last year... didn't wear any of their stuff then either. The OSU vs. Akron debate is old and tired. My point was that there a thousand better ways (many of which were suggested in this thread) to encourage people to wear Zips gear than to walk up to them and say that their clothes are disrespecting our "house". CK said it best, no one was born an Akron fan. People are less apt to become one when someone has the gall to accost them and tell them to (even kindly) not wear OSU gear in our building. coachk
Being a University student. I have to ask....Why does it matter what school apperal you wear to class??? I wear everything from Akron apperal to OSU to OU apperal. I don't think that it matters what school you are supporting by wearing their apperal to class. You are there to learn not to worry about what school the other students are supporting.l
