Dr Z Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Men's Basketball's Hollingsworth Suspended Indefinitely Senior point guard to sit remainder of season due to violation of athletics department academic policy. Feb. 27, 2004 AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron men's basketball student-athlete Johnny Hollingsworth has been suspended for the remainder of his senior season due to a violation of the athletics department's academic policy, head coach Dan Hipsher announced Friday. The suspension is not related to any NCAA eligibility issue. Hollingsworth and fellow senior Derrick Tarver sat out the Zips' Feb. 21 game against Drake, serving what was then a one-game suspension due to the same academic violation. Tarver was cleared Friday to compete Sunday against Can't State. "Being a member of the Akron basketball program means taking care of business in the classroom," said Hipsher. "We gave Johnny and Derrick an opportunity this past week to shore up some academic issues, and Johnny did not do so satisfactorily. Having my players graduate is first and foremost, and I won't reward them with playing time unless they hold up their end of the deal in class." Quote
Zip Watcher Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Gotta go to class .. they are student athletes after all. Can't say I'm happy about not having him out there .. but I do think the program has to enforce some basic rules. This takes some balls by a coach on the brink. The classroom matters at Akron .. and it should for the team as well. The Joyce era began a few games ago .. it's now officially in full swing. Go {to class} Zips! Quote
Guest AkronZipsFan34_1_5 Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 I agree class comes first and part of me thinks him losing someone very close to him has affected his game and school for him. I hope someday he'll get better. Quote
zipboy Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 God Bless Hollingsworth. I hope he gets it back together and wish him well. Hipsher had no choice. You have to follow some basic rules. It is a big loss but only when he played like capable. And he has been the most inconsistent performer all year. Joyce is steady at the point. This should open up some more minutes for McFadden. Looking to Sunday, Joyce, Tarver, McFadden, Hipsher, and Wood/Travis, ball movement should be better. If Tarver rests, McFadden goes to the 2, we get a lot bigger. I still think give Nick Myers a chance. He can hit the 15 footer and pull Edwards out. With Joyce and McFadden out there, we have 2 good 3 point shooters. This should help spacing. If the Zips win out, they have a good chance at the #8 spot. A win on Sunday also helps deny Can't the title and #1 seed. There is a lot to play for, Can't has played larger than life. A knock to their confidence could be a big blow for them. John Whorton had a great comment after Can't beat us in the tourney about 7 years ago. He said that Akron was the bully and the best way to beat a bully is to slap them down. And they slapped Akron down that day and made them go home crying. That was the start of their 6 year run. It is now time to return the favor. A win creates some self doubt for Can't heading into the tourney and sets the stage for the future. Go Zips, the JAR will be rocking!!! Quote
zff Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Great Post ZipBoy you have me pumped up for the game. I alos hope Johnny gets his head back together. From all the interviews I have heard he sounds like a good kid. Too bad life has thrown him some curveballs. Quote
