Highlights of the Can't game from Athens, but not a peep about our game. They even mentioned that Can't's win allowed them "to remain atop the MAC East". Never mind that UA's in first place too......Grr.....WKYC was sure to show a bunch of Buckeye basketball stuff though, including comments from Thad Matta. They couldn't even mention our game in the toss back to the anchors? Do we exist? Bleah! At least WEWS was there. Their cameraman even taped the AirTran ticket halfcourt shot attempts.

I sent an email just now. The comment about Can't being atop the MAC East really annoyed me. I suppose it's technically correct, but he couldn't even mention that they're tied with us? Did he even know?

I'll agree that if you show Can't, you show Akron. But I'm not going to knock them for the OSU coverage. Their #1 vs #2 game against Wisconsin news is one of the top national sports stories right now...not going to knock them for realizing that.

My guess if that they got a little blurb about the Can't Game, and their position in the standings, and probably never really looked at the standings themselves.Really.....if you want to look at it correctly.....Akron has the lead in the MAC East by way of them being tied with Can't, but being ahead if you consider the head-to-head tie breaker.

Here's the reality of the situation.I'm betting the Can't OU game was on TV and it was easy for him to pull highlights off the bird (dish), where our game was not on TV. They would have had to send a shooter to the JAR, and crews are always light on the weekend.I'm sure it is not a deliberate slight.Anyway, Baskin has been canned....he's just serving out his notice. He'll be gone in a few weeks, which in my opinion is too bad. He's one of the better sports guys.

Heard back from Andy Baskin, which was nice of him. He says that OU provided the highlights of the game, which is why he showed anything from that game. Our score was in the ticker, but I wish the win could have at least been mentioned in the toss back to the anchors. "And, by the way, Scott and Lydia, the Akron Zips won tonight and stayed atop the MAC East tied with Can't--details on wkyc.com." Something fast like that just to acknowledge our existence. ;) The ice storm did take up more of the newscast than a usual night so some sports time was excised, but still--don't mention Can't if you don't also mention UA. :)That makes me wonder....did UA offer highlights of the game to any stations? Or could they not do so because a station (WEWS) was already there and had their own video? If it turns out that UA could be providing video to the news outlets and isn't, resulting in us not being covered, then UA would be the problem here more than the station itself.Skip-zip is correct; the Zips are really the ones atop the division when head-to-head is concerned. The statement that Can't stayed atop the division last night with their win really irked me.

I've never heard of a University offering highlights to any television station. As stated in my previous post...the OU game must have had a video feed on the satellite (televised), that's why their game made the air.Channel 5 sending a camera has nothing to do with anything when it comes to what the other stations can air on their newscasts.Even if UA drove highlights to each station, they probably wouldn't air it because:-it was shot by a non-union photographeror-other news, like the ice storm, shortens the sports hole where they just wouldn't have time for it.Guys, you've got to remember that even though we are Zips fans and take this stuff seriously, that the guy on the lawn chair in Parma really doesn't care...and that's what the stations have to take into account when putting their news together.

You can doubt it, but Andy Baskin told me (and I quote) that he had Can't Highlights "because Ohio University provided them." According to Andy, "Ohio provides highlights because they are not really close to any TV markets." I went to grad school at Purdue and for non-televised football games (usually nonconference early-season games), the local TV station would sometimes air clips filmed by Purdue itself, with the onscreen credit "Courtesy: Purdue Jumbotron" or something like that. So I don't find it really suspicious that OU would have provided highlights to WKYC (or any other station).

on the plus side...channel 5 put together a really nice two-part piece on the zips & romeo and dru. I have it on the dvr, if i ever figure how to get it to my pc, i'll put it on youtube.

Are you talking satellite coordinates?

wkyc is a joke for a television station when it comes to sports. i like watching 19 action news. they always have scores for all the local schools, not just who decided to send in video of the game.

He didn't say how they provided them, just that they provided them. The footage, filmed entirely from one end of the court at the baseline, somehow didn't appear to be from a live broadcast but seemed to possibly be home cooked.I'm not super loyal to any one station but 5 and 19 do seem to show more from all the teams. The Akron-Canton news on TWC 23 shows more Zips stuff but on a weekend it's not on. I had 3 on because I was waiting for SNL to come on and I didn't want to forget what channel I was on--sometimes I've left it on 5 or 19 forgetting to switch to 3 for SNL. :P

Here is my response from Andy:I had a shooter going down to your game. The weather took the shooter away. The only reason I had Can't Highlights is because Ohio University put them up on the bird. I’m not sure if you noticed…I only had 2 minutes for sports I normally have 4. You know I am a zips fan. Brian and I will have something in Sports Tonight. AndyI'll be watching tonight.Channel 19 is good for pr0n and tabloid stories. If that is what you are into, then that is your station. My argument to Andy that he didn't address is that they are the only Akron news station with Channel 23 downtown. I don't care how bad the weather is, they couldn't have one guy from Akron at the game? Unless they have no full time camera folks in Akron and it is all shot be Cleveland guys.I agree with the early post: even if it was shortened and the other clips were easier to obtain, a mention in the throw-back would have been better than nothing!

Yep....a one-sentence mention at the toss would have been nice. I believe that the Akron-Canton News operation is very dependent on WKYC's Cleveland operations; the sports and weather are done in Cleveland during the weeknight newscasts with the news anchor actually in Akron, and they don't have a weekend newscast based here. So it wouldn't be surprising that they might need to send a camera from Cleveland. It would have been nice if channel 23 had remained its own station way back when, and maybe Akron-Canton could have become its own TV market. Instead, WAKC was the stepchild ABC station that WEWS always wanted to go away since it was siphoning viewers, and it eventually went away as a true local station.I like to watch all of the stations to get a balance. Each of the stations has up and down sides. 19 sometimes is more sizzle than steak, but every station runs tabloidy stuff and sells out for ratings from time to time. Sports Tonight just started....hope to see some mention of the Zips. ;)

I am actually watching wkyc right now an he said that he is going to talk about the battle for 1st in the mac east and he said somthing about all of the emails that he has been getting from akron fans after his telecast yesterday ha ha.

I saw it too. They did a mediocre summary of what is happening. Again no zips footage, but at least Baskin mentioned the passionate Zips fans that emailed him all day about not mentioning anything last night.Still no mention of local heros Joyce and Travis.

I figured there'd be no footage since they apparently didn't have any (and WEWS wouldn't provide it to WKYC), but a mention of the score last night and/or Romeo and Dru would have been cool. At least they mentioned the viewer feedback, acknowledging on-air that UA does have fans....in case the Can't people might have gotten another impression.

I sent him an email thanking him for the message. I asked him why no story on Dru/Rome and if it was commonplace for universities to send footage if a game isn't carried by TV. Here is his response:We didn’t have highlights…because the weather took our camera last night…We will do the Romeo and Drew story over the next few days….U of A..doesn’t provide it. The only reason OU does, is because they have a very good TV program and an uplink. They are not really near a tv market. Columbus is as close as it gets. So they feel out highlights after every game. Thanks for Watching tonight…I tried to give you guys some love…AB

Fear...it doesn't work that way.None of the shooters for the Akron Bureau live in Akron..and besides, they're not going to bring a guy in on overtime just to shoot Zips highlights. They do not staff the Akron newsroom on the weekends at Channel 3, which is also TWC 23.The part he said about sending a shooter and him being called off for weather makes all the sense in the world...that's how it works...unfortunately. Weekend resources are always thin. Shooting something like Zips highlights would be done inbetween stories. Now, concerning OU, that's pretty good that they have a satellite uplink, which would be necessary to beam up video to the bird.OU is known for their media and journalism departments and I'm sure being located out in the sticks makes having an uplink a necessity for such things.I'm pretty sure Akron does not have an uplink. They are very expensive to own and also expensive to rent...just to send up video to stations who may not use it anyway. And if they decided to edit, then drive the tape (I would assume from the scoreboard feed) to the Cleveland stations, I'm sure they wouldn't make it in time for the newscast. So, I'm afraid that if the Zips are not televised, where the stations can peel off video, we're going to have to depend on them sending shooters to get highlights on the air.Concerning Channel 19, remember that on the 10'oclock news, which they produce for Channel 43, they have a full 15 minutes of sports from :45 to the top of the hour...which gives them more time to include things such as Zips highlights.
