Thoughts on the Tournament

Recommended Posts

Some preliminary thoughts going into the tourney1.) First and foremost we must think about CMU/Buffalo. I would think that Buffalo would probably prevail in this one leaving us to take care of the Bulls. I like Buffalo. They've always brought a lot of students to the Q. It should be fun, but they can be dangerous.2.) Granted we live to fight another day, then we must worry about the Can't/Western winner. I for one do not want to see Can't again till next year. They have a niche for the tournament, and beating Christian's squad three times in one season is a tall task, not that we are not capable. I would be fine with seeing western in the semi's.3.) Our depth... I will point out that this team played one of the deepest teams in the conference and beat them twice already this year. We survived overtime at Can't with even Joyce on the bench. These guys can go the distance, but I'm not so sure that we can withstand three barn burner games. We need to put our quarterfinal opponent away early and try to get some the lesser played guys in there.4.) Our composure.....we did seem to panic in Can't when they got on their run. There were some flat out ill advised shooting and stupid turnovers going on. We were not playing our game for a period of time. We need to learn to slow it down in the end if we are up and stop forcing things. It seems like we hit a few threes and then we became trigger happy. Just take good shots.

It seemed to me like on a couple of occasions they were looking to bury the "dagger shot" from behind the arc. As ill-advised as the shots may have been, I kind of liked the cajones that it took to put them up.

I like the fact that we are going for the kill, but when it's not working and the shots are not falling, just make a simple basket.

I like the effect the 3 points have on demoralizing the opposing team, especially when you are building a big lead. However, last night, Haminn Quaintance and #34 (i think his name is Singletary), the two big guys had 4 fouls with over 7 minutes remaining in regulation... in this type of situations, i can't see why don't we take the ball inside to foul them out.

For the most part, it looked like many of those 3-pointers were being taken early in the shot clock because they were open looks. The one's we made were big if you look back, and some of the others could have broken the game open. I think we were taking what they were giving us.Frankly, I was much more disturbed about our turnovers than I was about our shot selection. And here's something I stated on an earlier post. Can't's offensive rebounds were what kept them in the game. If not for them, this game could have turned into a blowout. They are very athletic, and we need to do a better job of blocking these guys out if we play them again.

Same here. Dru looked a little slow with his passes last night.....several were interecepted. Dials needs to catch and dribble immediatly out of those traps. All players need to learn to stay away from the sidelines and corners when the opposing team is trapping. It seems like basketball 101 but they weren't playing it last night.

Great move by Can't State trapping Dials often. Worked on him several times. Good coaching.Thank goodness Dials made them pay at the end with a great pass. He needs to elevate his offensive game at the Q.

Speaking of Dials, does anyone remember when there were about 18 seconds on the clockin OT and Dials was bringing the ball out. Can't State tried to foul him but the refs would not call a damn thing, so we had to use our final timeout to avoid the 5 second violation. I really don't know what those refs were thinking. Can't State did that all night to Dials and there were no calls, and we were complaining about it, so its kind of ironic that the final no-call benefitted us by allowing us to set up the game winning shot.

I've come to the sad realization that across the MAC Nick Dials is one of the most hated players in the Confrence. I have no explanation to offer that doesn't go into any kind of racial issues so I'll stay away from that one but it seems to hold pretty true. Him and Linhart get shoved around all over the place while refs just look the other way. It's pretty ridiculous sometimes.

Here's why I think he catches flack from the fans:1. Nick dials looks like he should be in the stands and not on the court. Fans think "who's this punk, he doesn't look like a D-1 Bball player?" So they give him a hard time.2. He's a pest on defense. This generally annoys opposing players and also fans.3. He kills opposing teams runs with 3's. He buries teams with 3's. He's just a good ballplayer.

all good things are being discussed...i agree with everything were saying...as for shot selection, the 3's bothered me as well...yeah we hit a couple clutch ones...but sometimes i felt like we were settling for them...its never good to settle for anything, especially in a game like that, where every basket counts...one of the things i liked was that we crahsed the boards last night, if we can continue that during the tournie it would greatly help us...turnovers cant be an issue at the tournie, those will make or break us...foul shooting got a lil better, but needs more improvement...we hit some clutch ones tho...i think well be in good sahpe for the tournie, as long as we stay confident, but dont think our games will be easy
