Blue & Gold
I heard from a reliable source today that Lake HS shooting guard Eric Coblentz is talking with Keith Dambrot today about walking on to the team. Eric is a very good student so will be given an academic scholarship, instead of an athletic scholarship. Eric is a very good player. He's 6-3, was named 2nd Team D-2 All-Ohio and averaged 24 points per game, 5 rebounds per game and 3 assists per game. From what I hear he really wants to play for Akron. Earlier this season he was offered a scholarship by Liberty University, but turned it down. Considering we would not be using an athletic scholarship with Eric, this would be a very solid pick up for the Zips!
J-BIDDY
I played with his older brothers Zach and Seth. Eric is the tallest of the bunch and easily the purest shooter, but he lacks the other twos quickness which is something I think will hurt him at this level. Seth sat on the bench a year at Can't State and Zach played for Malone. Eric would fit in well at Akron and knowing the family the way I do he is a good kid who is mentally tough! I think he could contribute in the style of Linhart with scrappy defense and rebounds. I would believe Eric to be a better shooter but Linhart has the quickness Eric lacks. He would be a great addition to our squad and would definitely be able to contribute more than others on the bench are able too! It's going to be very interesting to see how the roster ends up shaking out...there's A LOT of players in the mix:Locks (7): Wood, Milum, Middleton, Dials, Linhart, Conyers, C. McKnightShould Be In (6): Swiech, B. McKnight, Steward, Bardo, McNees, RybakThen you still have Goddard, Carroll, Sallee, Sowers, and whoever else I'm forgetting that will also be competing for roster spots. timmyboy
When was the last time we had kids wanting to walk on at akron and not go somewhere else where they could get a scholarship? This is a great problem to have., but its unfortunate for the kids who dont make it.also dont forget to throw in the Moss kid from Akron Copley. He is a preferred walk on for the Zips next year also. That would put us at 20 kids on the roster( D.roberts Included)....... Looks like alot of these kids wont be with the team by the start of next years season. zippyrifle32
i know there is a limit to how many players can dress down for a game, but is there a limit as to how many can be on the roster? i mean, it's not unusual in other sports to leave players behind on game days, yet let them practice for a chance to enter the rotation. wasn't sure if there was a roster cap or not. Zipgrad1990
According to what I can find on roster limits:12 scholarships per team 15 players may suit up and travel with the team to away games, conference tourneys and the NCAA tourney You may exceed 15 players on your team. The total number and the names of those players on your "team" must be submitted before the start of the season and you may not exceed that number for that season, it is from that number you may "draw" your 15 "traveling" players from. All players may suit up and sit on the bench for home games even if they are not "active" for said game. Since I found this on a discussion board, it may not be accurate but it does sound reasonable so hopefully it is accurate too.
Blue & Gold
There are a lot of talented players on this team. If we add Lance Jeter and Darryl Roberts next year (okay, Jeter would not be eligible till the following season, but for the sake of these numbers I'm going to include him) as well as preferred walk-ons Eric Coblentz and Andrew Moss, look at this roster:1. Mike Bardo2. Tim Carroll3. Jimmy Conyers4. Nick Dials5. Nick Goddard6. Nate Linhart7. Chris McKnight8. Steve McNees9. Cedrick Middleton10. Quade Milum11. John Rybak12. Jeremy Sallee13. Zach Sowers14. Jeremiah Wood, plus...15. Steven Sweich16. Brett McKnight17. Ronnie Steward, plus...18. Darryl Roberts19. Lance Jeter20. Andrew Moss21. Eric CoblentzThat's a lot of players! However, after next season we'd lose Dials, Goddard, Middleton, Milum, Sallee, Sowers and Wood, so it might not be as deep as it looks. That would leave us:1. Mike Bardo2. Tim Carroll3. Jimmy Conyers4. Nate Linhart5. Chris McKnight6. Steve McNees7. John Rybak8. Ronnie Steward9. Brett McKnight10. Steven Sweich11. Darryl Roberts 12. Lance Jeter13. Eric Coblentz14. Andrew MossSo that's more like it. There'll be a log jam this next season, but the following year, things will be thinning out quite a bit. Figure between 2-4 more players.
Blue & Gold
If Darryl Roberts and Lance Jeter join the team, would they then probably be counted with the scholarships we give out next year?
Zip Watcher
If Darryl Roberts and Lance Jeter join the team, would they then probably be counted with the scholarships we give out next year? Both Roberts and Jeter would have to be walkons to be here next year. Then maybe one would use one of the opening scholi's after CM & co. graduate. There's another walkon that redshirted this year who you're missing: Leomeister. Didn't get the first name, but bigger kid, who was on the team and recognized at the banquet the other night. If you remember one game this season, CM had to change the jersey at half time and came out wearing #43 - Leomeister.
