Penguins are so popular you are over hear on the Akron fan board. Go to the Penguins board -- I couldn't find it when I looked.
That's fine. It's funny that YSU is your topic of conversation on here.BTW:its guinzone.comor ysupenguins.comThe latter looks like shit and has some idiots on there, therefore I recommend site 1.

What I see living in Youngstown are 2 newspapers that devote themselves to YSU athletics, and 3 TV stations. I hear the 2nd most powerful AM radio station in NE Ohio pick up YSU athletics. I see people wearing red, Y's all over the mahoning valley, fire hydrants painted like Penguins, hell sculptures of Penguins all over the area I know call home. Where is that in Akron?
Comparing Youngstown and Akron is like comparing apples and oranges. Y-town has its own TV market which can focus on its area. Akron has one paper, and a tv news operation that's only been on the air since 2002 or so, and now is only on cable. Because we share with cleveland in one of the largest TV markets in the US, Cleveland sports will always come first because they make up the majority of the market share. Not only that, people in Akron for some reason refuse to view it as more than a "commuter school" (and sadly, many of our students..STILL) and feel that Akron's wasting it's time trying to "aspire" to something better. Case in point? Look at some of the backlash in the papers about UA buying the Quaker. It's ridiculous.
We are a mediocre 1-A football program AT BEST! I would pronounce us as a below average 1-A program. When we had our good football year alumni and students supported the team, however that was all. We don't have the community support that YSU has, and a lot of that is credited to national championships and a winning tradition. IDC what level of football it is. I WANT A WINNING TRADITION IN AKRON! I want what Youngstown has in Akron, I want our local newspaper to care more about the Zips, than the Cavilers, Indians, Browns and Buckeyes.
It's probably not going to happen to the degree that we overtake billing on those guys. If akron had it's own market (and was thought to be starting one in the 60s) it probably would have changed the coverage/visibility/tradition. At least not yet. The winning is part of it, but a lot of it is community perception. And both of these things will change, but they will TAKE TIME. YSU, I will admit does have some really nice things going for it. It is the brightest spot in town (Chevy Centre withstanding) and they do a lot of things well, have great community support, and is a good school and they don't deserve as much bashing as we give them. Are they better than Akron? Never. Akron hasn't begun to show it's greatness yet. The best is yet to come people.

Umm when I went to school Youngstown owned is. Greatness still to come.... well I'll be waiting and continue to buy my season tickets until then I'm still waiting.
Why are you so negative?
For real. It's one thing to be critical of the team you support, but you're downright ripping the Zips the way a rival would, while treating YSU as the greatest thing since sliced bread. I doubt you are truly a Zips fan in real life. A fan, even if he agreed with you 100%, wouldn't present the points in the manner and tone you do.Second, you said YSU was on national television four times last year? As in, on a TV station more available than ESPNU? I don't think so.Thirdly, if it's noteriety you're after, I believe it IS better to be a small fish in a big pond than a big fish in a small pond. Go across the country and have everyone tell you what they know about Akron and YSU. While I'm sure people won't be able to tell you much about the Zips, they'll be able to tell you less about YSU...sorry, I'm not buying that they'll tell us they are i-AA powerhouses and a previous stop of Tressel and Jaws. If they know that, they are serious fans who will know even more about the Zips.Fourth, ESPNU is at least available on Dish Network and Directv across the country and some cable stations (with more coming as noted in a previous thread). That, to me, counts as National Television and it's worth it to play those games, even on Wednesday and Thursday nights, for the exposure...but that has been debated endlessly here and I don't want to dredge it up again.I will say this in defense of YSU though...1) I don't know why people are glossing over it, but if playing Ohio State for more money or Akron for less money is an either/or choice, of course they're gonna take the former. So would we.2). I don't think it's quite as simple as they aren't "sacking up" to join 1-A. You have to apply to be accepted, and there's a LOOOOT of criteria to being accepted, and I'm not sure YSU meets it all. I could be dead wrong here - maybe the MAC or someone invited them to join and they declined, I'm sure I will be swiftly corrected if that's the case, but...even if they did decline, I'm willing to give them more credit than to say they didn't accept because they were a-skeered.

our upset of nc state last year at least gave akron some press on espn ect.trying to compare who is more popular is someone's opinon.still we played penn state and i thought for the most part the zips played them tuff.ysu got drilled .we played nc state and won. if ysu moved up they would be playing d-1 schools every week not slippery rock. alott of teams move to d-1 like akron and not to many have had major success year in year out.ysu would probably struggle like all the other one's that have tried before.

I am an Akron alum but now a Youngstown native. And when I hear you people speak on here its as if Akron athletics is the greatest thing since sliced bread. You should hear me about the Indians, I am more critical of the Indians front office then I am Akron. You people sit here and act as if YSU is looking at Akron and saying "Wow!" When in reality there not. Am I critical of my school, damn right I am, I want perfection I want a winner that's how I was raised. I want people to be realist as well as look at the glass half full. But when the Indians make stupid trades and moves, (Brandon Phillips, trading for Scott Stewart signing Roberto Hernandez letting Guthrie go for nothing etc etc..) I let it be known how stupid it was. Same thing with you people here. YSU was on ESPN twice last season and ESPN2 once, and ESPNU, so by your standards YSU was only on national TV 3 times. I invite you guys to do some research before making opinions. Also YSU did not get drilled they held Penn State scoreless for 1 1/2 qrts. So I invite you people to do some research before you post false statements on this board. How I know this is becuase I watch college football and follow all NE Ohio sports no matter if I am a fan of the team or not.If you really think people around the country know the Zips football team more so than the Penguins I think you are very biased. I'm sure the average college football fan can associate Jim Tressel with YSU over Taylor and the Zips. That's just my personal unbiased opinion. Say what you want about me but I will be as critical as I want to about our football program and athletic department. You guys can believe what you want but I'll keep my personal opinion. (FYI my wife of 10 years is a YSU grad, but I didn't hold it against her)

Indians06 nailed right on the head................... You ask an average person about Tressel and YSU or Taylor and Akron...And I guarentee you: More people would associate YSU and Tressel. Tressel has won 5 titles, all on national tv, every damn time OSU is on tv, they bring up Youngstown State; they don't for Taylor now do they. Honestly, as a person who really doesn't even watch the NFL like myself, the main reason I found about Taylor was one time in the offseason watching NFL Primetime on ESPN when they brought it up that he played for the Zips.Tressel and Youngstown will live forever!

One again as an unbiased person I have to step in. Equins you saying holding a team scoreless for 20 mins is an accomplishment isn't saying much for your program. So you as a spokesman aren't that good.2nd off the Penguins aren't my team.3rd of all the 2 games were played under entirely different circumstances. Penn State and Akron met during the 1st game of the season for both schools. Both teams were rusty, and Anthony Merelli looked atrocious against the Zips (as he did most of the 2006 season). When Youngstown State played Penn State it was played fresh off an embarrassing loss for the Lions to Notre Shame. Now the two game were played under different circumstances. Penn State scored 3 more points on the YSU defense then they did on the Zips, but they had 2 games under their belts. Plus I think Dyral Clark (who went to school at Ursuline) probably had a little chip on his shoulder against his hometown school.I was at the Penn State Akron game and enjoyed Penn State very much. I think we played a respectable game against the Lions and held our heads up high when the game ended. I also think YSU played respectable too. I watched that game on the U with my wife and although she felt YSU could win the game when it was 0-0 at the end of the 1st qrt I knew they were done. This is why you can't compare how the Zips played against PSU in week 1 to how YSU played against them in week 3. The only way to settle whose better is to play it out. Until Akron offers Penn State like money (somewhere in the $250,000 range) we won't see this happen. I don't think it's what you people on this board make YSU out to be as "whimps" its a smart business decision by YSU to gain hundreds of thousands of dollars to play the big schools. But hey you guys think what you want. But until then you people can keep attacking me, I however refuse to drink the koolaid that you people are.

i never attacked anyone.all i was replying to was the comment i made 37-3 is a blow, and i dont car how close it was at half.i dont blame ysu for taking the money from the big ten schools.the poster came back and said i did not have my facts.the facts are 37-3.with 12 games to fill now ysu,and akron probably will not play each other for awhile.booth schools can make alott of money playing occ schools.it would be nice to have a series with you guys, but the zips are not going to play in y'town so pretty much ends that.still if we could get ysu to come here for a game once every four years would be a solution.i dboubt if anything will ever happen on either side
