zip81
A letter to the editor of the Canton Suppository, er, uh, Repository, speculates that with the new U of Akron stadium that the folks in the Rubber City may try to steal the Hall of Fame game away from Canton.Paranoid...a little...don't ya think?Akron will try to steal Canton’s HOF Game, tooIt looks as if the University of Akron will be getting its downtown football stadium, and it will probably be a palace compared to Fawcett or the Rubber Bowl. (I wonder why the cost of college tuition keeps spiraling upward?) Once that stadium gets close to reality, we can watch for someone in Summit County to start suggesting that their new stadium would be a much better venue for the NFL’s annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. I would suppose that any who are in the business of making money from the HOF Game would be sensitive to the attraction of a larger gate. Remember how Akron stole their Aeros? TennesseeZippy
Hadn't thought of that possibility. Now that the guy mentioned it, however, it's not a bad idea!
GoZips88
Oooh! Once bitten, twice shy. Still smarting after The Don stole the Aeros away oh so many years ago. Something tells me we won't be seeing Earl at InfoCision Stadium on 9/12/2009.I like seeing the HOF game played right next to the HOF. Wouldn't mind the additional revenue and visibility though! zen
lol, I mean, WTH, we got NFL quality indoor practice facility.... :PI don't see it happening, unless fawcett is physically unable to host a game.
zip81
I don't think there is any way in H-E double hockey sticks that they would move the HOF game out of Canton. With the way the Canton community supports the HOF, there would be wholesale slaughter in the streets if this were to happen. Besides, the people who plan the HOF are all from Canton. No way they'd move the game to Akron.I also think it's cool to have the game played next to the Hall. Fawcett isn't THAT bad.And even if it were a possibility...I wouldn't want to see this happen.

GoZips88
Sorry, I have to make one more post to avoid the mark of the devil. Thanks I wonder if one of the board admins can change the counter so it jumps from 665 to 667?
urbanpreppie05
Sigh...another uninformed complainer. (I love it when people try to say the stadium is being paid for by tuition)The City of Akron got the Aeros because the CAK Indians were playing in a glorified High School stadium that was far away from the city center and games were poorly attended. AA baseball had changed to much nicer facilities by this time. Akron was able to make a deal. Canton was not.
Blue & Gold
Urbanpreppie05 is exactly correct. For some sad reason some in Canton like to think that Akron stole "their" team. When in reality everyone knows that the Canton-Akron Indians were surely gone to the greener pastures of the east coast if it wasn't for Akron stepping up and building our downtown Canal Park. Thurman Munson Stadium is an embarassment. Even most Canton hillbillies realize this. We stepped up and kept the team in the area. This poor old man, as well as anyone else with misinformed bitterness, needs to get over it. IMO, ever since the AA team moved downtown, the Canton Suppository has been spitting serious sour grapes over anything Akron. Of course, this could have been going on earlier than the move to Akron, but that is when I started noticing the Suppository anti-Akron bias. Jealously is an ugly and tragic state. Speaking of the Supp's sour grapes attitude, does anyone know if the Rep even ran an article covering UA's new stadium announcement?
UA Fan
I don't think there is any way in H-E double hockey sticks that they would move the HOF game out of Canton. With the way the Canton community supports the HOF, there would be wholesale slaughter in the streets if this were to happen. Fawcett isn't THAT bad.And even if it were a possibility...I wouldn't want to see this happen.Earl is correct that I.C. stadium will be a palace compared to Fawcett and NFL officials and players, the broadcast media and Stark Countians will be aware of it. I don't think the game will suddenly be moved to Akron but it will apply some pressure to upgrade Fawcett. If they do a remodelling and need an alternate site for the HOF game one year they will have a nice one just up the road. And I love that all those Stark Countians will be flocking up the the UA campus for HS football and spending money and having a great time in Akron. They might just decide to come back for some college FB.
Zipsrifle
I also don't see why they would move the game. I mean if they wanted a larger gate, just have the game in Browns Stadium.
Blue & Gold
Absolutely, UA Fan! We need as many high school football games in that new stadium as possible! We've got to take advantage of any opportuntiy to show off our beautiful new campus and revitalizing downtown! Maybe the Stark Countians will come early, hit up one of our many downtown restaurants (even more are surely on the way now that the stadium has been announced), stroll through our breathtaking new campus, be awestruck by our gorgeous new football "palace," and then decide to come back for some exciting D-1 college football!P.s. IMO, in one of the concourses, we should have life size cardboard cut outs of some of the players along with their 40 times and bench press max. I think the vast majority of the public is utterly ignorant as to how HUGE D-1 college football players are. I think the typical Stark Countian has the idea that to play at Akron you just have to walk on, or something; like any kid who plays at McKinley could play at Akron. They are, through no fault of their own, just uneducated as to how amazing & elite an athlete one must be to play at the D-1 level. If you grow accustomed to watching Zips football, when you go see a high school game (even when it's Massillon/McKinley) it is laughable how small, awkward and slow the high school athletes are in comparison. D-1 college ball relegates high school ball to the level of "cute." I just don't think most folks get it. I was a good high school player, but I know that if I got hit squarely by one of Akron's linebackers I'd be in a wheelchair the rest of my life!!! Buckzip
Fawcett stadium is a landmark The game there is a tradition. If they were going to move the game for gate revenue they could have moved it to the Rubber Bowl, Cleveland or Ohio Stadium. They are all much bigger. skip-zip
I think Buckzip has it right. The HOF Game is not a money maker. It's a part of a weekend of ceremonies. I don't see anyone associated with the HOF really having an interest in bringing everyone up to Akron for the game so that they can draw a few more bucks from gate revenues.
